Echo Fighters from separate series than the original

I am so happy that the Echo Fighter branding exists. It has caused so many fans, myself included, to finally learn to be able accept a few clones here and there. But of the 7 Echo Fighters we currently have, all of them come from the same series as the fighter they're echoing.

Which makes complete sense to be honest. Heck, when the idea of a character having an Echo Fighter that's NOT from the same franchise as them comes up, it is sometimes responded to with backlash. Be it for the reason of Echo fighters being able to share character slots with their original (which does not prevent the idea from being possible if you ask me) or whatever other reason someone may decided to use.

Now will separate series Echoes ever become a reality? Your guess is as good as mine on that one. Right now it doesn't look like Ultimate's DLC will include anymore Echoes and god only knows how long it will take for the next entry in the Smash franchise to drop.

But for funsies, let's explore the idea and list some options of Echo fighters from separate franchises for either a character already on the roster or an idea for a newcomer.

I'll be going for the latter as I leave an opening example of.........

Original Fighter: Euden/Echo Fighter: Alfonse

Occasional controversies aside, Dragalia Lost and Fire Emblem Heroes were pleasant surprises for Nintendo fans who typically don't care for mobile games. There nature of not being pay-to-win likely being a contributing factor.

However both of them have a slight problem in the realm of getting a character in Smash Bros. That being that they both have clear cut options for who that character would be (Euden for Dragalia and Alfonse for Heroes obviously) but both of them run into some roadblocks when it comes to moveset potential.

Argue about it all you want, but what a character can do and how they can stand out in the roster doing it really does seem to be a pivotal factor in the character selection process. And in that regard both of them run the risk of being too swordy without much to separate them well enough from the others like how Ike is different from Marth (this is an especially troublesome roadblock for Alfonse).

But Dragalia Lost is having a crossover event with Fire Emblem Heroes at the end of this month. Which means (presumably) that FEH characters would be able to use abilities from Dragalia like shape-shifting into Dragons. With that in mind, how about we take this method of using Echo fighters to cross two series together and go crazy with it by having Euden and Alfonse both use the abilities of, well, both of them.

Before we get into the moveset however, why is Euden the original fighter and Alfonse the echo fighter?

Well because Dragalia Lost is having a crossover event with Fire Emblem Heroes. Not the other way around. Plus Fire Emblem already has a presence on the roster and having the first playable character for a brand new series be an Echo Fighter just didn't seem right.

Anyhow. Moveset Time.

Euden's Moveset:

Weapon:

Now in the official artwork, Euden is depicted with a Knight's Sword. But that's a very generic weapon in Dragalia. We're talking the equivalent of the Iron Swords in Fire Emblem here. So instead, this concept will give Euden the Inferno Apogee. Euden is a Fire Element character and the Inferno Apogee is one of only two 5 star Fire Element Swords in Dragalia Lost. The other is Levatein, which I decided against because the Inferno Apogee bears more visual resemblance to Folkvangr. Which is Alfonse's weapon.

Now while they both mainly use a sword, there are a few attacks (such as all of their tilts) where they use an Axe instead. This is part of Alfonse's contribution to the moveset as FEH's Hares at the Fair event gave an alternate version of Alfonse that uses an Axe instead of a sword. However that Axe was just a giant easter egg in a giant spoon (don't ask) so in this moveset Alphonse will instead use his fathers Axe which goes by the name of Glitnir. For Euden, I wanted him to use a Wind Element Axe (inspired by Ranzal and Midgarsormr) and of the two 5 star weapons in that category the Axe of the Southern Cross bears more resemblance to Glitnir than the Stormwrath Gaze. So Euden will use the Axe of the Southern Cross.

Midgarsormr:

One of the 5 dragons really important to the story of Dragalia Lost and the one that Euden himself forms a personal pact with. Both Euden and Alfonse will shape-shift into him for a handful of attacks. Height wise, Midgarsormr is no taller than either of them (they're both at about Corrin's height) which deviates from canon but Ultimate finally made Ridley playable so size arguments be damned.

Jab:
A 3-hit sword strike pulled from Euden's basic attack cycle in Dragalia Lost.

Dash Attack:

Euden Shape-Shifts as he does a shoving attack with his left arm.

F-Tilt:

Euden swings his Axe in an overhead slash.

U-Tilt:

An Axe swing in an Arc above him

D-Tilt:

A horizontal slash with the Axe low to the ground.

F-Smash:

Exalted Fire. Euden does a somersault that brings his sword crashing down with a burst of flame.

U-Smash:

Euden Spins his Axe above him as a small cyclone of wind envelops the Axe (works like the emerald gales of Robin's Elwind Tome. So no windboxes.) The attack ends with an upward swing.

D-Smash:

Blazing Circlet. Euden uses a powerful fire enveloped spin slash.

Grab & Pummel:

Euden shape-shifts to grab the opponent with his left claw. The pummel is Midgarsormr headbutting the opponent.

F-Throw:

Midgarsormr just throws the opponent forward with the claw that's already holding them.

B-Throw:

Midgarsormr spins like a tornado and throws the opponent behind him.

U-Throw:

Lightly tosses the opponent up then slashes at them with the right claw

D-Throw:

Shoves the opponent to the ground, transforms back into Euden, and slashes down with the flaming sword.

N-Air:

The 3-hit combo that some characters in FEH use when performing special attacks like Aether.

F-Air:

A one-handed thrust with the sword. Inspired by Alfonse's jumping attack animation in FEH.

B-Air:

A 3-spin attack with the Axe.

F-Air:

An upward thrusting headbutt as Midgarsormr.

D-Air:

Shape-Shifts into Midgarsormr and slams towards the ground in a stall and fall type of attack.

Special Moves:

Each Special move will combine the ability of 4 star or above dragon from Dragalia (One of each element other than fire) with a skill from FEH that relates to Alfonse in some way.

Neutral B - Tornado Tail Rally:

Euden Shape-Shifts into Midgarsormr to charge up the Tornado Tail. A circular attack with a windbox. While charging, Euden can select one of the 3 between Rally Attack, Rally Defense, and Rally Speed in a manner similar to Shulk's Monado Arts. Likewise, they each have a similar cooldown after the stat boosting effect wears off.

Side B - Subjugating Sol Sword:

Euden shape-shifts into Gilgamesh this time and slashes downward with a sword of light that covers a range identical to that of Corrin's Forward Smash. Opponents struck by the attack will flash with an aura of light 1 second after. This aura lasts twice as long as the one in timed matches that shows who's in the lead and you will remain in place as Gilgamesh until it wears off. Press B again while the aura is up to revert to Euden and launch towards the opponent with a slash that heals you like the Sol skill does in FEH. The closer you are to the aura wearing off, the more you'll heal.

Up B - Poseidon's Trident Death Blow

Euden Shape-Shifts into Poseidon and takes a moment to ready his trident. A moment in which you can angle your direction in any of the 8, well, directions. Afterwards you'll thrust yourself in that direction with the trident held out and enveloped in water. This moves does more damage if you use it when on the ground first as a reference to the Death Blow skill in FEH which grants ATK +2 if you initiate combat.

Down B - Defense Smoke Terror Sphere

Euden Shape-Shifts into Silke and begins charging an orb of Shadowy Smoke. During the charge a small puff of shadowy smoke appears in the air at a distance that's half of the max range of Palutena's Explosive Flame. But while charging, this shadow can be moved around with control stick ala Din's Fire. A move which covers about the same range as this one. When B is released, the orb will burst out from where the small puff was. It doesn't do any damage, but it does lower the targets defense which makes them take more damage for a limited time. The longer the charge, the longer the de-buff.

Final Smash - Dragonpact Breidablik

Euden takes out the Brediablik from FEH and shoots a blast of orbs from it that covers a fair circular radius. Any opponents caught in this blast will be transported to a cut-scene attack where Euden is joined by Elisanne, Ranzal, Luca, and Cleo in attacking the trapped opponents with rapid strikes from their weapons. Ending with a team attack done by all 5 party members shape-shifting into a dragon from Fire Emblem

Euden into Naga
Elisanne into Ninian
Ranzal into Duma
Luca into Anankos
Cleo into Grima

Alfonse's differences as an Echo Fighter:

- The Dash Attack does not shape-shift into Midgarsormr. Instead Alfonse shoves his left arm in human form with his shield on said left arm. This shield is like Link's Hylian shield in that while it's up during the dash attack it can block attacks and projectiles.

- The Smash attacks and Down throw do not have their Fire and Wind Effects with Alfonse. This results in a lower damage output than Euden, but the Alfonse versions of the attack deal greater knockback to compensate

- Dragonpact Breidablik summons Alfonse's allies instead of Euden. Those allies being Sharena, Anna, Fjorm, and Eir. Likewise, they all shape-shift into one of the 5 dragons that are very important to the story in Dragalia Lost.

Alfonse into Midgarsormr
Sharena into Zodiark
Anna into Brunhilda
Fjorm into Mercury
Eir into Jupiter

Now that that's finally done, what about you guys? Have any ideas for separate series Echo Fighters and what they'd be like?

Giegue as a Mewtwo echo is the obvious pick.

Miis could be an echo of anyone really.

if they add Kamek, Ashley could maybe be an echo (or vice versa) if the moveset is generic enough - through that's still within the SMEU - Super Mario Extended Universe.

Waluigi as a Snake echo gets thrown around a lot - not too keen on that idea, but I see where the appeal comes from.

Knuckles as a Donkey Kong clone could... kinda work? maybe? not an echo through, just a clone.

I still stand by the idea that Blaziken is the only good Falcon Echo. Black Shadow is way too bulky to fit over Falcon (Ganondorf would work better, maybe even Incineroar would work), and all the other F-Zero characters are too irrelevant to be worth considering. Blaziken is a popular starter from an Unrepresented Generation.

The more echo fighters the better, I think, as long as they don't intrude too far on developing full-fledged newcomers. We're still left unsure if any more will happen outside the Fighter Pass, but I'd be all for it. And I think inter-franchise echoes could absolutely be on the table here--Melee's clones were basically proto-echoes of sorts, and Ganondorf is a particularly infamous case that also gives us precedent.

That said, this particular idea for a moveset that combines Euden's and Alfonse's abilities feels...awkward. It falls into one problem I see in fanmade concepts sometimes: Trying so hard to include or "represent" as many ideas as possible that the moveset just feels cluttered and disorganized. The specials in particular feel like ideas from both games were crammed together just for the sake of the crossover angle.

Not to say the concept couldn't work, just that its current state is very rough around the edges. You have your work cut out for you here, since one character is able to shapeshift and the other is not, but hey, no one expected a walking plant to work in Smash and yet Sakurai and his team came up with a really compelling concept that convinced them to pull the trigger on it. Just make sure to focus on keeping things clean and coherent above all else: The references should serve the moveset, not the other way around!

Well making sure one characters abilities didn’t dominate the moveset too much compared to the other was a mindset I had so.....you’re not wrong ^^;

I wonder if this is why we haven't seen any more cross-series clones. That, and look at most of the echoes we got:

:ultlucina:Marth's descendant who disguised herself as him
:ultdarkpit:A Pit clone in lore as well as in his moveset
:ultdaisy:The princess Mario had to rescue instead of Peach in Super Mario Land, is considered her partner in spinoffs
:ultrichter:Simon's descendant who is the origin of several moves in the Belmont moveset
:ultdarksamus:Metroid Prime reborn with Samus' DNA and one of her suits
:ultken:The first of many Ryu clones, both in SF and in fighting games

Poochy and Stork as an echo of Duck Hunt. (Yoshi Egg instead of the can.)
(In my pretend Smash Bros. game "Eternity", Poochy is a newcomer along with Yarn Yoshi.)
