So the other day I was browsing YouTube, and found some very interesting info. Apparently, Melee planned to have E-Reader functionality. For those who don't know, the E-Reader was an old GBA/GC attachment where you could scan dot-coded cards to get items or levels for games, play small minigames/classic Nintendo games and other stuff. It pretty much faded into obscurity, and some games had planned functionality with the E-Reader but never saw the light of day. One of these games is none other than Super Smash Bros. Melee.
Here's how it would've worked. There was going to be a bonus disc for Melee, which contained the function to scan E-Reader cards made for the game. You have to scan 3 of the cards, and after you've done so, it writes data on the Memory Card, unlocking a character. The video shows off a rare prototype of the cards and bonus disc. The character that is "unlocked" in the video is...a character from Resident Evil? I'll leave you guys to discuss that one. Of course, because it's a prototype, it doesn't actually write data on the Memory Card. What's also interesting is that the card scanning sequence uses the unused jingles from Melee's disc. Perhaps this was what they were truly intended for?
I have to say, it would've been pretty cool if this feature was used to it's full extent, but I guess it just wasn't meant to be.
What do you guys think?
