Welcomce to the Video and Critique Thread!

Post your videos of playing as Luigi here, and have them critiqued by others. However please don't embed videos. It causes unnecessary lag on slow internet connections. Just post the link.

Go ahead!

This is a match I had with FOW over Wifi. It might give some decent insight into how Luigi feels and plays in the new game. He's very close to his Brawl form I'll say that much. I also get some decent combos in here.

Hello luigis or humans. I have a few videos that I am going to put up. I've been trying to get use to playing luigi since I'm more use to his brawl gameplay. I've found out a lot of stuff that helps in his gameplay. So far I have this one video up and I apologize for the terrible opponents. It is hard to find good players on wifi.

Also feel free to critique. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFe-b59YED8

EDIT
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5L8jqMOVTxA vs a samus

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_1IrbYN82s vs a Charizard. I give this guy credit for rolling for the last 9 matches and using side b like metaknight tornado. That move is ridiculous on wifi.

Vs Bowser Jr.
- Aerial combos look great with Luigi! I think Bowser Jr. is more along the type of lightweight so if he can combo him some what it looks good against other characters. I noticed as well Luigi's aerials do not kill, so I assume just for combos, knockback, and damage. Smashes will be Luigi's kills options from what I saw. Also, I like how you used the ledge mechanic like that, it looked really useful and smart in edge guarding.

Vs. Samus
-On the first stock you seemed like you didn't really know how to get into Samus's space which made it seem like you was forcing a lot of moves and put into many negative positions. Also seemed like after you died you became a hungry for the kill lol. After getting the kill though it seemed like you understood how and when to approach. Staying close enough so she couldn't use her projectiles and baiting attacks so you could punish. Tornado, also looks really good in application, is it the default one or a custom move one? It doesn't really get lift from what I saw but, it did do great damage, good knockback, and better approach than in brawl.

Vs. Charizard
-Great games in general. Everything was executed well. I liked the different kill options used, especially the spike lol. Yeah not really much more to say that I guess wasn't said before, just giving feedback I guess.

Yeah Luigi is totally a different character in this, but some things from brawl and melee are still there. The cyclone was regular cyclone. It may have not gotten lift because I tend to control my cyclone. I'll rise if I think I can chase and get an extra move in, but if not then I'll stay put and I won't rise.

Thanks for the analysis. I'll have to look over these again myself. That samus was so annoying with the rolls.

Smart use of the cyclone definitely, makes sense why the distance wasn't consistent. I saw the video of cyclone killing which is definitely new for cyclone I believe. But yeah great games and the Samus game seemed pretty annoying with all the dodging.

Love seeing these early Luigi vids. Keep up the work!

That Bowser Jr. match looked pretty good. Smart combos and follow ups. I'd disagree that he is a lightweight though, @ Donyoku Donyoku , based on data I've seen and the match, he looks like more of a heavyweight. Still, Luigi's combo potential looks as good or better then Mario's!

Ok I found a video of a Japanese guy playing Weegee for a good while, its pretty good in my opinion. Can watch it here if you like. Any feed back or things you notice is appreciated.

Also, on @ Luigisama Luigisama match against Bowser Jr, when you grabbed the ledge around the same time as Bowser Jr and he was knocked off do you think you could have got a follow up during that time? I have seen some videos where it is possible since the opponent cannot attack during those frames.

Yes this is very true. I have to work on this and doing a follow up. Not to mention that once that wii u version comes out I'll see if this would be a perfect set up for cyclone gimp.

I watched portions of the video and I was impressed when he got the shield break. The shield didn't even look too depelted which makes me wonder if up b on shield would be a good shield breaker, but that seems very unlikely. It would be amazing if it worked like dk's side b.

EDIT more videos.

Really like your commitment to posting vids, @ Luigisama Luigisama . Nice work. Also, I'm no Smash pro, but I do love playing Luigi, so I hope that qualifies me to critique your vids! Here's what I saw:

Things I Liked:
1. Good aerial spacing and short hop pressure throughout, especially @3.07 and @3.25.
2. Effective use of missile and fishing for a misfire, see @ 2.54 specifically. Note how using the missile in the air and allowing Luigi time to fall away from the opponent makes it significantly safer on hit or shield. I think this will be the key to good missile use: use it when the opponent is in the air or on a platform.
3. Use of Down Smash on Luma @ 2.33. This seems to be the best answer for Luma I can come up with so far. Dsmash is Luigi's least useful kill smash, and is very useful for damage racking or getting the opponent off of you, so I think Luigi shouldn't worry about "wasting" a good kill move on Luma.
4. Good read on the Up Smash @ 3.49. I think this really shows off Rosalina's lightweight class* (she was at 108% before the Usmash), and how though she can be a pain to get in on, Luigi's still solid kill moves can help him finish the job earlier then she can him.

Things I'd Like to See More Of:
1. Pretty often in the match you approached with a short hop Fair or Bair or tried to put up close pressure on with a cyclone or Usmash instead of using one of Luigi's greatest new tools: his Down Throw (@.50, @1.13, @2.19, @2.50, @3.25). While I think it's important for Luigi to mix up his approach, the fact that Luigi can threaten so much potential damage plus better positioning plus interrupting the opponent's offense with his Dthrow is too good to pass up. I think that alone would have helped in the matches. Unless Rosalina can use Luma to save her while she's being juggled?

Overall, really great matches, I enjoyed watching them.

Use your phone or computer webcam.

Thanks for the critique. I feel once luigi gets in it Rosa has few options since her moves come out slow.
Edit
I disagree with those weights. Megaman imo is the heaviest character.

Alright, I am getting used to playing Luigi and here is one of my videos I recorded (sorry I don't have a capture card). I feel as though I am playing Luigi as I did with Brawl so I'd appreciate tips to change that!

Okay from watching the video I saw good things and bad habits.

One of them was at 0:46 where you were punished for rushing in or in this case ran into a move taking unecssary damage.

Also you roll too much. 0:50 you rolled into his jab and then at 1:52 you rolled into upsmash thus losing a stock. You should never roll into your opponent always roll away from them. It should only be used as a retreating option. Only roll through your opponent to dodge or to get to a postion where you can attack again.
The use of projectiles is good, but you have to keep that space between you and your opponent. If fireballs are keeping your opponent away then keep doing to get the lead.

Learn the new ledge game. Since there is that ledge steal tech learn to use it. As soon as x character grabs the ledge then you grab it and jump bair.

After rewatching the video, I realized that I was rolling too much, which was one of main problems in Brawl. But thank you for catching that for me early on!

Also, when you stated that I can steal the ledge then perform a Bair, I tend to Dair at my opponent to immediately kill them off, but I suppose doing that may mix things up for me. Again, thank you for the criticism as I shall take them into account when I play!

Dair? How do you hit with that? I can only hit with bair because of the weird animation after the ledge is grabbed.

Well, not when they are on the edge, but mainly when they are mid air trying to grab onto the ledge. Sorry if that confused you.

After seeing Luigi x Link, I could only wonder what happened to Luigi's recovery frames. They're gone...

Finally got some matches recorded. Unfortunately it is wifi, but that's as good as I could do considering the circumstances.

Bracket for reference: http://challonge.com/ATLCanSmash3DS

--------------------------------------------------

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_p1XNg56jE4 vs Raziek :4robinf:WR2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApngDCWCADA vs Raziek :4robinf: Loser's Quarters

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYA3tIQOC5E vs. Sqiddwr :4falcon:/:4sheik: Loser's Finals

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptTrXEQC9HA vs. Croi :4mario:/:4lucario: Grand Finals

-------------------------------------------------

I felt I generally picked it up, I think if I had another match with Croi I could've figured out around snagging aura sphere and just smash4 Lucario in general, since I did a lot better the second time around vs Raziek as I figured out how Robin worked, but that's on me for not being able to adapt quickly. I would go in spurts where I would do really well, and then go into auto-pilot where I would spam n-airs or smashes for kills. Definitely gotta work on that.

Any advice/critiques welcome! Also, there's a nice kill in the Loser's Finals set :p

This was just a regional wifi tourny via our Facebook group. It involved all the players who go to our local tournaments, but...i guess we were too lazy to get out of bed LOL.

You can find various tournaments/ladders on sites like Nintendo Dojo, Gamebattles, Smash Domain, etc..

Plenty of sites with hidden talent :)

Zhao, great Luigi play. I love those delayed jab combo and grab resets, especially in your second set vs. Robin. Luigi's grab game is hype.

Maybe this isn't the place for this, but I initially had Robin pegged as a difficult match for Luigi. What's the Luigi Army's opinion on Robin? Based on Zhao's matches, Robin seems to be able to keep Luigi out pretty well with fair and Elfire if she wants to.

Its pretty awful for Luigi. It's hard to get in with the number of projectiles in the way and the fact that the character is pretty ranged, which gives Luigi trouble.

The guy using Robin in those sets was our local Marth main in Brawl, so he has a very good idea on how to keep Luigi out. Of course, new game, new character, so his zoning wasn't as tight as it will be. She's definitely one of the better characters for creating walls and spacing out Luigi.

However, I do think Luigi has a SOMEWHAT easier time pressuring and forcing opponents into commitments. I've been using short hop fireballs to get people to hold their shields, then I rush in for the grab -> d-throw -> whatever works. Usually, if they try to rush in when I'm doing a SH fireball, I just come down with a cyclone and pop them up for the good beatins'.

I believe if you're having to choose a starter, I would NOT go FD. Having platforms adds tons of dimensions to Luigi's game and it makes camping him more difficult. I've been struggling against characters who have the open flat space of FD to camp (like in those vids with Sheik, Lucario, and Robin) but when there's levels to work with, Luigi can pressure them into more favorable situations.

Zhao, I think you are doing wonders for the Luigi community, especially for the ones who are wary of Luigi's viability in the competitive arena. Your speed and use of Luigi's grab should be an inspiration to any Luigi player. I would perhaps recommend just a little more use of the cyclone to keep the opponent unstable. I think your lightning fast combos with d-throw to nair and beyond are excellent for racking up percents...but I think something needs to change as you prepare to set up a KO. Smart players who know Luigi well will shield the cyclone, but I think it creates opportunities by disrupting whatever they planned to do.

I agree that platforms definitely favor Luigi.
