What is it?
Duelist is one of the greatest Brawl minigames created by the Smash Community. Originally started in Texas, Duelist has quickly become the crowd favorite of many post-tournament friendlies. It has spread all over the nation including the East Coast, thanks Apex. This game is what you've all been looking for in Brawl: balance of characters, crazy advanced techniques, fair stages, no tripping, everything!

Official Rules for Duelist
* Normal SBR Rules
* All players must use Snake.
* Players cannot use any attacks above the stage, this includes Dsmash, C4, Mortar Sliding, and grabbing. Only attacks that take place inside the stage's boundaries are legal. Footstooling is not an attack.
* SDI through the stage is allowed, popping through to the top of the stage from below it. However, you can only use this 3 times per stock.

Stage Layout

  • 2 Square blocks at the top.
  • 7 Triangle blocks on either side.
  • 3 Square blocks below the last triangle block on each side.
Note: It is recommended that you use a light background. That way you can more easily see C4, Grenades, and Cyphers.

Enjoy!

I lived in Texas for part of my life. God why couldn't I have stayed there <3

Anyone try a slightly varied form of this? For example, perhaps opening up spaces between the triangles. It makes playing a little bit more difficult as you now have to aim your DI from attacks into specific locations to tech or else you will go flying out. Doesn't just require teching skills, requires DI skills as well.

Another variation in the stage might be adding the drop down blocks. The rule added allows anyone who died to step on one allowing it to fall through and possibly messing up anyone from being caught underneath it, hitting the block, or flying through the holes on top.

There are plenty of variations you can do with this. I didn't list any because this stage, in it's simplest form, is adequate. The more you play the more you realize how many small/advanced things there are that you can do. Some examples:

- Footstooling people after they blow themselves up.
- Use aerials after cypher before C4 without fast-falling.
- Pressuring people by Cyphering right next to them so they stick you with C4 and die.
- Purposefully not tech against certain walls for surprise kills.
- Nikita is really really good.

SDI through the stage? I didn't know that was possible.

On the off chance this become super serious, I came up with an additional rule that nullifies any "cheating" by keeping to the top. I came up with it after my brother would refuse to jump off.

Just limit the ground time stat - you can view it at the end-of-the-game screen. Just like the ledge grab limit rule.

Currently me and my bro have it at 5 seconds. It practically forces you to jump at the start of the stock. I'd say maybe 5-10 seconds would be ideal though - to allow for fluctuation.

This is a good thread Zac, but it also needs a proper format. 1v1? 3 stock? Timer/No timer? These are burning questions that need to be answered before FS6.

World's first Duelist tournament!

And thanks to Beah, it will be on livestream :)

I was playing this with my brother and it's amazing.

But I think it might be better to start with a 50% handicap, that way you don't have to spend so much time blowing yourself up just to get yourself moving. We also found it's a lot of fun with smashballs. They're not easy to get but whenever your Cypher flies up it'll home in and damage the smashball.

Just some considerations for the official ruleset.

Starting from 0 opens up a lot of offensive opportunities for your opponents, making it some of the most dangerous periods of the round if you're not careful and intelligent about your attacking/c4ing/cyphering. You also don't need 50% to do ****... I've spiked people to their death when I was at 20, lol.

This is too fun. One of you Texas players randomly put this on my Wii at Apex, and I still play it from time to time.
