Yay I'm also downtown TO.
There's def local smash here, especially around the college/uni campusses. Unfortunately I think they all moved to using facebook for planning stuff.
I'd join local tourneys and events, but I don't really facebook, and have no desire to link that to anything Smash-related lol.

smash.gg lists events but other than Facebook I haven't found anything. Am trying to get a Toronto Smash discord going as someone who also doesn't really use facebook.
