I'm more of a "learn by watching" person.

Does brawl's DI system mimic that of melee's?

I was was watching a video series by VG boot camp on DI in brawl and was wondering if it transfers back over to melee as well.

The video says to get the most out of SDI, to input control stick and mash C stick directions when hit.

I attached a picture from the video demonstrating which way you're supposed to input the directions on both the C stick and control stick.

Can anyone verify that this is the optimal way to SDI? And is this indeed better than quarter circle DI?

barlw's isn't exactly the same. Quarter circle is just a phrase used to refer to double SDI (i.e. doing 2 SDI inputs on the same attack). You can't SDI with the C-stick. All the C-stick does is let you ASDI in a different direction than the control stick so you never have to tap it multiple times.

So lets say I was hit by an attack sending me horizontally. I'd input up on the c stick and up/left on the control stick for optimal survival DI the second I get hit?

You would hold perpendicular because that exerts the most influence over your trajectory. So if you got hit horizontally to the left and wanted to ground tech, you would hold down. If you wanted to survival DI, you would hold up and hold the C-stick towards the opponent (or maybe up and towards, idk which is better). Holding the C-stick wouldn't help for the ground tech because you want to ASDI down, and your control stick is already going to ASDI down. Holding the C-stick towards the opponent when you survival DI will basically give you a mini-SDI towards. The control stick is aiming your trajectory as high as possible, but if you don't use the C-stick, you will also ASDI upwards (which might not help as much as towards or up-towards, but I'm not even sure).

If someone hits you with a move that sends you at up-left at a 45 degree angle, the two perpendicular DIs are down-left and up-right. Down-left would be for ground teching, up-right would be for survival. Once again, the C-stick only overrides ASDI, so you would hold the C-stick down to ground tech (since your control stick won't ASDI down when you're holding it down-left), and you'd want to hold it in some direction towards the opponent for survival DI.

You also have to account for stage shape and location when you try to survival DI. If you are on PS, you will want to survival DI at a much lower angle than normal because the stage is so wide. If you are on the edge of FoD and get usmashed by Fox, you would actually want to hold slightly towards him instead of the usual down-away because the ceiling is much higher than the walls are wide.

Thanks, you're the best :)
