Sm4.5h has been announced, and much of the roster is already revealed. Let's examine some numbers here:

Most popular Nintendo series:
>1. Mario
Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Daisy, Peach, 8 Koopalings, Rosalina and Luma, Dr. Mario for a total of 8 characters, not counting Wario, Yoshi, and counting the Koopalings as one

>2. Pokemon
Pikachu, Lucario, Squirtle, Ivysaur, Charizard, Mewtwo, Greninja, Pichu, Jigglypuff for 9 characters

>3. Wii series
WiiFit Trainer, MiiBrawler, Mii Swordsman, and Mii Gunner for 4 characters

>4. Zelda
Link, Young Link, Toon Link, Zelda, Sheik, Ganondorf for a total of 6 characters

>5. Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong and Diddy, for a grand total of 2 characters after nearly 20 years of the franchise being in Smash Bros from the beginning, one character added in that time

...

>18. Fire Emblem (for reference, the most popular Fire Emblem game ever was Fire Emblem Awakening, which was outsold on its console by a port of Donkey Kong Country Returns, Fire Emblem as a series total has sales comparable with Metroid and F-Zero despite having many many more games in its library than these)
Marth, Ike, Roy, Robin, Lucina, Corrin at six characters.

I can understand why the Wii series only has scraped up four characters because it's a sports and activities series, but with all of this information in mind, what is Sakurai's problem with the Donkey Kong series? In almost two decades of Smash Bros, he's added only one Donkey Kong character, despite the Donkey Kong franchise being in Nintendo's and gaming's top five biggest series of all time both in terms of sales and in cultural impact. What sort of strange grudge does he hold?

It's absolutely bizarre to look at the extensive list of characters that the other top 5 franchises have in the game, look at the list of characters that Nintendo's unpopular pet franchise Fire Emblem has, and then there's one of the biggest gaming series of all time sitting there with just your basic bread and butter duo when they could add King K Rool, Cranky, Funky, Lord Frederic, DKCrew, Dixie, they could even make the Animal Buddies their own group character like Pokemon Trainer. It's not like there isn't a giant pool of characters to draw from like is the case for the Wii series, and the Wii series still managed to land more characters.

Someone explain to me. At this point the information simply points to a disinterest in the Donkey Kong series by the project lead. It has a deep pool of characters, is an extremely popular and lucrative franchise, and has been part of the Smash series for almost twenty years. In all that time, despite meeting criteria that have gained other franchises several times more characters in the games, only one character has been added.

With King K. Rool now added, Dixie and Cranky Kong are the last two legitimate DK reps. DK's roster won't be complete without either.
