DI'ing in or away from Marth's tipper?

This is something I've been meaning to ask on the boards. When playing against a good Marth, I see myself getting combo'd then f-smashed at the end of the combo. Should I DI away from the f-smash and risk getting tippered, or DI in and eat a normal forward smash?

You have to gamble. If Marth has the option of tippering you, you have to weigh the risk vs reward of DIing to survive vs the possibility that he will go for a combo extension and you will take more damage due to your DI.

It depends on the exact situation. Sometimes DI in will avoid combos. Sometimes DI out will avoid combos.

At some percents, I'm sure you can slam away as you're being hit to SDI + DI his fairs away and be safe. Maybe not at low%

So for example, while being combo'd by short hop double fair --> fsmash, require me to DI the fairs in, or should I just DI the whole sequence out? I found myself getting hit by that combo a lot. Admittedly, I'm pretty naive when it comes to DI. I often input incorrect DI or just DI in ways that aren't optimal

It really depends on percent and what part of the sword you get hit with and how close they are to you. All these variables mean this is a lot easier to just learn the feel of than remember all the different variables mid combo. It'll become intuitive eventually.

In most situations, DI down and away should work. At some higher percents he may be able to get a WD fsmash off that.
