CRT Monitor vs TV and lag

I see a lot of people with CRT TV's at tournaments simply because they are most likely to have composite input. If a CRT monitor had composite would it still project the image as fast as a CRT tv? Are there already reliable ways to convert monitors into usable displays with little to no comparable lag?

also, sidenote, are there any good places to get small portable crt tvs

thanks in advance

They use CRTs not because it has composite inputs but because it has no lag. There's lots of discussions about this but the gist of it is that there aren't enough reliable LCDs/Plasmas (ie: HDTVs) that have playable lag. Even the best HDTVs have some, even if it's not noticeable and because of that CRTs are preferred. That's just how it is - until the day the smash community completely accepts a standard HDTV monitor, it won't be accepted in tournaments. And since not everyone can afford a couple hundred dollar monitor, CRTs are here for the foreseeable future.

As for finding CRTs, look on craigslist because you can probably nab one for free or less than $30 depending on the size/brand you're looking for.

From what I've read, and seem to keep hearing, is that the lag the TV puts out is very minimal, though I'm sure it depends on the TV, and that a lot of the lag is due to upscaling the lower definition that GC/Wiis are native to, to the high definition of the TV. I really have no knowledge on how it works though, so I can't say myself.

As for the topic: I don't know about monitors but I don't see why they'd be a problem (assuming it's an old CRT monitor... which I imagine is harder to find than a CRT TV). I'd check craigslist or maybe some thrift shop like store for CRTs.

Not to be condescending with my sentences, but is space an issue for you?

If not, then I'd say its more worthwhile to spend your time looking for a CRT TV that's guaranteed to be considered lagless rather than fixate it on attempting to find out whether a CRT monitor produces enough lag to interfere with gameplay.
