Create Your Own 75-Character Roster (made up of 15 groups of five)

So you've been tasked with designing the roster for a Smash Bros. game, but there's a few important stipulations:

• Your roster must be 75 characters exactly.
• You must group characters together in 15 groups of 5.

Examples of groups would be by a particular franchise (Mario, Zelda, etc.), by a "retro" distinction or a "third party" distinction, by a console generation or particular system, etc.

I'm definitely encouraging a lot of creativity with this roster game! Feel free to ask questions if you have any! I'm going to post a roster as an example!

I’ll give a list of reasons for newcomers and some of the controversial choices

Spoiler: Reasons

Sheik: While she is a second Zelda, she is one of the more memorable one-offs due to OoT’s success, and I’d like to bring back the transformation gimmick.
Jigglypuff and Pokemon Trainer: Mewtwo, Lucario, and Greninja are important, but Jigglypuff is a staple just like Falcon, Ness, Sheik, Marth, and Falco, and Pokemon Trainer is the player character.
Pyra/Mythra: I find Mythra fun to play as, so this is just personal bias.
Isaac: Another biased pick since I like his Super Smash Flash 2 moveset (I’ve never played Golden Sun).
Chrom: I prefer Robin, but people wanted Chrom.
The retros and Wii Fit Trainer: They give diversity to the roster, and most of them highlight important aspects of Nintendo’s history.
Ring Fit Trainee: Ring Fit Adventurer is popular.
Alph and Octoling: Just extra characters for Pikmin and Splatoom, but they should be easy to add.
Tails: A major character in the Sonic series.
Arle: Puyo-Puyo has been around for awhile, and there’s two Puyo-Puyo Tetris games on the Switch.
Tidus: I’ll just leave it with him being most wanted.
Bomberman: A requested character.

1. Super Mario: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Bowser Jr., Rosalina
Covered the main characters with the first four, and Jr and Rosa are both iconic side characters that still fall under the main Mario series. I considered replacing one of them with Toad but decided the two we currently have are too cool and unique to get rid of.
2. Mario Spin Off: Wario, Yoshi, Waluigi, Daisy, Geno
All of the characters who originated in Mario but branched off into their own, or just star in a spin off title. Waluigi and Geno are the only newcomers; with Waluigi we finally have all of Mario's main cast imo, and Geno is just a cool character with moveset potential as well as a fan favorite among the Smash community (at least older fans). Once again, considered replacing Geno with Captain Toad but decided against it.
3. Donkey Kong: DK, Diddy, Dixie, King K Rool, Cranky
With the additions of Dixie and Cranky, I feel that the main DK characters are now present.
4. Zelda: Link, Zelda, Ganondorf, Tingle, Impa
Got the Triforce trio, as well as two other recurring characters. Skull Kid is way more popular than Tingle, but I just think Tingle would be funny to see in Smash.
5. Pokemon: Pikachu, Pokemon Trainer, Mewtwo, Lucario, Grovyle
Not sure if Pokemon Trainer is cheating, but I would keep them as representative of Pokemon's iconic mechanics. I would keep their selection the same as in Ultimate. Pikachu, Mewtwo, Lucario are all iconic to the series and so I kept them. Fifth choice was difficult, but I decided to go for a personal pick and choose Grovyle to represent the Mystery Dungeon series..
6. Kirby: Kirby, Meta Knight, King Dedede, Bandana Dee, Marx
Added Bandana Dee to round out the main four playable characters, and Marx as he is an iconic and one of the main "true" villains of the Kirby series.
7. Sci-Fi: Samus, Ridley, Fox, Wolf, Olimar
Kind of copied this category from some other users, but it worked out well. No newcomers here, but it was able to include a hero and villain from two of Nintendo's iconic series, Metroid and Star Fox, as well as Pikmin.
8. Retro: Ness, Captain Falcon, Duck Hunt, Mr. Game & Watch, Ice Climbers
I used the retro category to cover characters/franchises who haven't had a game in at least ten years or they primarily represent an early era of Nintendo's history. This is in the case of Mr. Game & Watch, who I guess you could argue just got the Zelda and Mario anniversary releases.
9. Other Nintendo: Villager, Marth, Pit, Mii, Inkling
These characters are from Nintendo's other iconic series. I decided to go with one per franchise in order to maximize the series represented. It's odd to cut so many FE characters, but I also didn't want to dedicate a whole category to the series. I condensed the Mii Fighters into just one Mii, with their moveset representing the Wii era as a whole, and maybe Wii U/Nintendo as a whole. I replaced Shulk with Pit at the last second, but I'm not super confident in this decision.
10. Fighter: Ryu, Terry, Kazuya, Min Min, Scorpion
Representing the fighter genre as a whole. Although originally intended to be just 3rd parties, I decided to cheat a little so I could keep Min Min. Replaced Ked with Scorpion from Mortal Kombat, as I decided it would be better to include another series rather than a second SF rep. Almost chose Chun Li to replace Ken but decided against for the aforementioned reasons.
11. Sega: Sonic, Tails, Dr. Eggman, Joker, Bayonetta
Using this category I was able to keep Sonic, Joker, and Bayo as well as add two of the most iconic gaming characters being Tails and Eggman.
12. Square Enix: Cloud, Sephiroth, Hero, Lara Croft, Chrono
Able to keep Cloud, Sephiroth, and Hero, who are some of the most iconic gaming characters, as well as add Lara who is also fairly iconic and Chrono, who is important to Nintendo's history specifically. Almost chose Sora instead of Chrono, but felt that KH couldn't be represented well without Disney content and I didn't want non-video game content in Smash.
13. Capcom: Mega Man, Phoenix Wright, Monster Hunter, Jill Valentine, Dante
Covering some iconic series here with Mega Man, Ace Attorney, Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and Devil May Cry. Almost included Zero instead of Monster Hunter, but again decided I'd rather include more series.
14. Microsoft: Master Chief, Steve, Banjo & Kazooie, Dovahkiin, Doom Guy
Keeping Steve and Banjo, as well as add iconic series such as Halo, Elder Scrolls, and Doom.
15. Other: Pac-Man, Snake, Simon, Sackboy, Frisk
Allowing us to keep the first three, and added Sackboy to rep Sony (and as a personal pic) and Frisk as another iconic gaming series (and as a personal pic again lol).

Originally had Konami and Bandai Namco as their own categories but decided these categories allowed me to maximize the amount of veterans I could keep and franchises I could rep.
