Contemplating turning off up jump on joystick

Hey Sonic forums,
I know this is more personal preference and all, but I have a question for you guys. I only play with the gamecube controllers, and am a Sonic main (clearly :)).

I can not think of a single situation I use up on the joystick as jump; I ALWAYS use X/Y.

I was thinking about removing the up on the joystick as jump feature from my game play, but I figured I should ask and make sure I'm not missing something before I add this to my muscle memory.

Removing this should make it easier for me to perform Utilts as well as eliminating the chance of me accidentally wasting my second jump (I don't really have the jump problem, but hey it can happen).

Is there any reason (as Sonic) I shouldn't be doing this, or better yet, a reason why I should be using the up on the joystick to jump?

Thanks.

Youre good. you should have dong that a while ago, imho.

My control settings have tap jump with conrtol stick off, and Y as my grab button. everything else is the same. i recommend it for those who love grabs or use it often as a big part of thier game (sonic mains)

I was actually contemplating doing that as well. I am truly just starting to get a feel for what I can do with Sonic and grabbing is becoming a big part of what I do, so I may be switching Y to grab. :)

I've always played with tap jump off since the release of brawl. I believe the only problem with turning off tap jump is some out of shield options, but I think there's another way you can do those anyways(jump cancelling I think?) Either way, Sonic isn't exactly the king of OoS options so I can't see it mattering much.

Anything that you can do with TJ on, you can do with TJ off.

The only thing you'll have to get used to is hitting jump when you want to do up-B from the ground while running and maybe even out of shield, if thats what floats your boat. Arguably, it might be faster/more natural to double jump aerials out of spindash with tap jump on, but it hasn't really bothered me much.

The 'advantage' of SDI without wasting jumps (which is oh so bad especially with Brawl's hitstun) can save you a bunch of trouble off-stage and maybe even on-stage.

Oh, not to mention, DACUS is like 1294817x easier (just hold up+forward while running, then C-stick + A/Z). But even so, I don't use it much.

I usually play it off, but I can play it both ways :3

It's just when you have it off, DACUS is sooo much easier.

Buuuuuut I almost never use it with Sonic so I just keep tap jump on nowadays.

How does TJ on affect insta edgehog?

It's like, a Half circle back. >__>

forward - down - back.

Iknorite?

It's strange.

either way, I always screw up with it on.

I get way too selfconscious with it on.

As was pointed out, turning tap-jump off makes it hard to Up-B and Up-Smash out-of-shield; you have to jump-cancel the up-B or up-smash, which can introduce a few frames of lag if you're not fast enough. Although it'd still be faster than dropping the shield first, I think. Sonics don't tend to do either out-of-shield, so it's not as much of an inconvenience as it would be for Marth.

The other aspect of tap-jump is meteor-cancelling; if you're trying to use your midair jump. In Brawl, if you hit a Jump button to meteor-cancel too early, there will be a delay before you're able to try it again. A penalty for buttin-mashing, if you will. However, this penalty doesn't exist for the control-stick; if tap-jump is on, you can mash Up a lot to get the meteor-cancelling 2nd-jump.

I'm not sure if the same time-penalty exists for up-B meteor cancelling.

Anyway, I keep tap-jump off, tap-jump was always my #1 regret about Melee tbh.

I keep it on for convenience. Default has TJ on, and I don't feel like switching names every time I go on.

Also, I dunno if you guys know this but you can do an aerial off the ground much faster with tap jump on. Run, drag the analog stick up with the left thumb, then do an aerial with the c-stick. It feels so much easier and faster than run, X, then Direction A. With Tap jump on, the jumping and attacking are practically simultaneous. I like using fair right off the ground as an approach, it comes out fast, has no landing lag unless you fastfall, and can lead to another attack, rather than dash A which has plenty of end lag. There was a video where I saw a sonic chain 2 or 3 of these. You could probably also use Uair because your doing it right off the ground and it has a longer reach.

You can also use tap jump to exit out of side B easier. At least, I find it better than holding B and pressing A at the same time.

I don't use it. It messes with my air game =/
&& I use both jump buttons. idk feels more natural depending on where I'm jumping from I guess =0

I keep in on.
I play Pika/Kirby from time to time. And Usmash OOS is too good.

Never had a problem with it in Melee, I think tap jump is more sensitive in Brawl.
But I've gotten a bit more used to it since Pika/Kirby/Sonic utilt/uair are too good. Not so much Sonic's utilt though. Still trying to incorporate that. >_>

I've kept it on, always.

Cause I play another smash game that doesn't suck, and it's mandatory there.

:093:
this.

i mean, if you play both games then turning it off is stupid, but if you only play brawl (ha) then do whatever you want to whatever want.

i had it off before but it didn't really add anything to my game, if anything it took it away.
i also tried b-sticking, which actually was great, but melee is too good to be able to do that

i took tap jump off because ever since melee, i had this problem where i always seem to press too hard on my controller when I wanted tilts or smashes, especially upwards. when i wanted to do a tilt, it messed me up mentally because i was worried about doing a smash, so i took extra care into doing it. and in melee, one frame of slightly bad spacin/ timing could mean instant death for you.
