Fox Tech Check List (New to Fox? Learn where to start.)

Super Smash Bros Melee is a game of options, and no character’s arsenal of options is vaster than Fox McCloud’s. This is what makes him the most intimidating character in the game – both to play against, and to LEARN.

I created this check list for myself initially, so I could keep track and check off everything I need to practice as I mastered it. I figured it could be helpful for anyone learning to play Fox, so I decided to post it. This list contains many skills that are not unique to Fox and may be used by some or all of the rest of the cast, but ultimately I am trying to compile all of the tech you could ever implement as Fox into one location – one list that you could even print out and check off the individual skills as you master them (this is what I do).

At the bottom, I included some insight about how to prioritize what you practice. This is only my opinion, and I am by no means an amazing player, so feel free to deviate from my “schedule” if you want. However, it should give people interested in picking up Fox a general idea of where to start.

This list is definitely incomplete, so please comment/pm me with anything I’ve left off. Also, I would like to include at least one link to a video tutorial/written guide for each thing on the list. If you know of a video for a tech that does not have one, send me a link. If you think you have a better video than the one I’ve used, also send me the link.

Please contribute! Hopefully this helps someone J

(now for my "where to start" advice)
SO YOU WANT TO LEARN FOX, EH…?

When I was first learning to play Fox, I was clueless as to where to start. I had trouble identifying which skills I should prioritize learning, and which I could learn at my then mediocre level of technical ability. I’ve gone ahead and prioritized the basic skills you’ll want to learn first, so you know where to start – and more importantly – where to go.

Also, remember that these skills BUILD OFF OF EACHOTHER. This is important. Do not move on until you have achieved consistency. If you can’t short hop consistently, shffl’d aerials > waveshine is going to be useless to you

Keep in mind that it can be mind-numbingly boring to practice the same tech for hours on end. Just because I put short hop first on the list doesn’t mean you aren’t allowed to practice dash dancing if you get bored of practicing short hops. This list is ordered in terms of what you should prioritize mastering, so even if you do practice your wavedash or dash dance here and there before you master short hopping, you’re going to want to spend the majority of time on short hops until you’ve mastered them.

Side note: It is important that when you learn to l cancel with Fox, you learn the timing with hitstun, and without. You will have to l cancel at different times depending on which aerial you used, and whether you hit an opponent or not. The 20xx hack pack is great for this.

Refer to the check list above for video tutorials

My last disclaimer: when you learn a tech, it will not be useful to you until you can fluently implement it into your play. Do not consider yourself to have the tech down, until you can string it together with moves or other tech that you know (i.e. you have not mastered the wavedash unless you can quicly shffl dair > wavedash back or wavedash out of dash dance)

1. SHORT HOP – This is going to be the most important skill for you to master, and the one that you will definitely want to work on first. So many of Fox’s other skills require you to be able to short hop consistently. Fox is also really difficult to short hop with (it took me MONTHS to achieve 100% consistency). DO NOT think that you are too good to practice short hopping and DO NOT skip this step to advance to harder stuff. You will regret it.

2. SHORT HOP > FAST FALL – Again, don’t skip this important step. Master it before moving on.

3. SHFFL’d AERIALS – Being able to do this consistently with each of your aerials (learn nair first) will give you so much mileage in your play. Nothing is more frustrating than getting nervous in tournament and messing up short hops or l cancels. Save yourself the stress, and really master these before moving on to Fox’s other tech.

4. SHFFL’d AERIALS > SHINE – Now this is where you start to get into the Fox specific stuff. First just practice executing the string, then practice getting the shine to come out as soon as you are out of the ending lag of your aerial (and don’t forget to l-cancel!).

5. SHFFL’d AERIALS > JUMP CANCEL SHINE – and by jump cancel, I mean short hop. Like the above step, accuracy first, speed second.

6. SHFFL > SHINE LOOP – You’re going to want to do step five, except use the short hop out of shine as the short hop for you next shffl’d aerial. If you have the 20xx hack pack, set a cpu to hold shield infinitely so you practice l cancelling with shield stun. If you don’t, use the old handicap 9 bowser trick.

7. DASH DANCE – Depending on your experience with smash, you may not understand why this skill is so vital to your success with Fox, but trust me – control over dash dance is one of the main factors that separates average players from good ones, and you will find the truth in this the more you play, watch, and learn about smash. Be able to move left/right while dash dancing (by making your dash left longer than you’re dash right and vice versa) as well as both minimum and maximum range dash dances.

8. JUMP CANCEL GRAB – Essentially every grab you make with Fox should be a jc grab. It has less end lag and better “hitboxes” in almost every situation. When you are dashing, press the jump button right before you press Z, and you will execute the standing grab animation instead of the dash grab animation. The threat of jc grabs make your dash dance very intimidating.

9. WAVEDASH – This is the s**t test for identifying if someone is a filthy casual or not. The wavedash is an incredible tool because it is fast and offers movement while still having access to the majority of your moves. Be able to do long and short wavedashes, and remember that you don’t want the jump animation to come out at all. It should just be a slide along the ground.

10. WAVESHINE – This is a tough one. Shine and immediately wavedash out. My advice is to, again, go for execution then speed. Be able to do this to the left and to the right. Also, be able to do it backwards while fox still faces forward.

11. SHFFL’d AERIAL > WAVESHINE – This skill is incredibly important because it gives fox safety in doing aerial approaches if you waveshine back and gives him mobility to get follow ups if you waveshine forward. That’s not to say its easy. Take your time with this.

That’s it for now. If people are interested, I will make the list longer, but these are the first things you will want to master with fox in order to make the most of your play. Let me know what you think. Do you agree with the order in which I recommend you learn? Do you want me to extend the list? And also, remember to contribute to the check list above.

Thanks everyone! BRUJO out.

I can see this being pretty useful for new fox mains. I'd recommend putting links to tutorials/threads next to each tech, for convenience.
I'll shoot you a PM with as many links to tutorials as I can find if you'd like me too.

EDIT: I found a fair few, but not everything. Like Brujo said, a fair few of these techs (specifically the laser) just require practice to get faster fingers and muscle memory.

I noticed shinehog isn't on your list of shine techs.

I can't do it myself but from what I've read from Relno on his Youtube channel, you do a turnaround shinehog by

At right edge of stage:
V B < V X V <

Shine turnaround edge canceled jump cancel fastfalled edge grab.
