How do these rumors come about. People just can't ever seem to keep things quiet sometimes. I didn't understand the part that mentioned: Eshaghoff is even accused of taking the SAT for a girl. What is that supposed to mean lol.

Eshaghoff was apparently able to pass off with I.D. as a female? I think the key note is that these locations were outside of the school district Eshaghoff graduated from so nobody would recognize him.

Wow arrested?

Over here if you cheat they just disqualify you.

This. From what I've heard of my region, they just disqualify everyone involved.

Wow, New York is the last place I'd imagine them to be that strict up the *** about test-cheating. I mean, to arrest someone? Surely, this has to be a case that will be thrown out of court, no?

a cheated SAT score can result in a student getting into college above somebody else who earned a lower but satisfactory score. I agree with the arrests. How else would you discourage the behavior? if all you do is delete the score, there's no risk. and they clearly don't care about fines. speaking of which, lol at $2500 for this. Just pay a tutor or study up yourselves, chumps. I got a 34 on the ACT without studying, I'm sure anyone can get the same score with some discipline. and if you can't, you shouldn't be going to a college where you need such a high score.

Can't believe that a student would be willing to put through this.

Eighteenspikes, while I agree about the arrests and fining, I disagree that not all people can increase scores through hard work and tutoring. Some people (like me) are just not test takers.

Edit--I'd give a personal example but that would show horrid of a test taker I am. :urg:

^ Pretty much this. I'm a horrible student myself. I never study for tests, and cram things at the last minute. I detest homework and never do it until I need to make them up to pass classes, and I wait for the last minute to do projects, essays, etc.. Yeah, I could be a great student if I took things seriously and gave myself discipline... buuuut, discipline and I... well, let's just say we haven't been on speaking terms since middle school.

You're missing the point. There are good and focused students who are simply, terrible at taking standardized tests. I am one of them. My SAT scores are much lower than what they should be if you looked at my high school GPA / course load, etc. Intense studying did not help me much if at all on the SAT. I don't expect bad students to get high scores on the SAT anyway.

Bad students, good students... makes little difference to me. You have your point, and I did see it the first time regarding being a great student, but being bad a standardized tests and all. I was merely getting something off my chest. :p

I was never good at taking tests, unless they were multiple choice. What I hate more, are tests where there's a math problem, you know the answer, like the answer is without a doubt in your mind, but then they want you to show your work. That really brings my piss to a boil. I can see why they want me to show my work, but it doesn't stop it from being an extreme annoyance.

Well over here if you're caught cheating you are disqualified and it goes on your academic record, thus when you apply to university or whatever and have retaken the tests, they'll still know you cheated first time around which ultimately completely screws you over.

I am in the same boat as Terwyj, really. It doesn't really come down to the SAT scores perchance, but just tests in general.
I am a good student, I surmise. I generally get homework done either the moment it's assigned or as soon as I get back from school. Essays and projects are easysauce. It all gets good grades for me.
However, if there's one thing that lowers my grades, it's a test. I've tried studying and I know that tutoring will not help me. This is why I have such trouble in courses where 70-80% of the grade is based on tests.
I am worried about the SAT because, again, it's a ****ing test. I'm pretty sure my SAT scores will not properly reflect how I did in high school.

Omnicron, it's one thing to say it after you've taken the test multiple times (like I did), and another to predict scores before actually taking the test. Once you actually get your scores, then you should plan for the next time. That's the advice I can give you anyway. ^^

I got a 33 on my only try at the ACT. It felt mostly like common sense stuff.

I disliked the SAT, though, regardless of my score on it.

Surprised kids would have $2500 to spend on getting a good score on such a dumb test lol.

There's a State Assessment, midterms, and SAT/PSAT coming up in my high school...a lot of the teachers have been talking about just what can happen to the cheaters. A couple have even said that expulsion would have a chance of happening.

uh, then college may not be for you. not trying to be mean. . . I took maybe 2-3 courses in my entire degree in which tests were not at least half of the grade. and gym wasn't even one of them. I was in the bottom 1/4 of my high school class because I slacked off and never did homework. I guarantee you my ACT score is the only reason I got into college and I'm doing fine now because most of the courses I take are exam based.

What the hell? Getting arrested for cheating on a test? Don't they just expel you from the school for cheating on an SAT or something? Like Christ, arresting someone seems a bit too excessive

This is the SAT, Steadfast. It's a whole different league from those petty high school exams.
Seems pretty ****ing stupid considering you have to pay for the SAT in the first place. Why go to jail for something you've already payed for? I can understand expulsion, suspension, failure for the year, or a simple invalidation of the test from the student and either giving him an entirely different test or simply just not letting him take the test at all to begin with, but arresting someone over cheating on the SAT is stupid.

Although, honestly, calling the police to take me to juvie sounds exactly the sort of thing my school would do.

How old are you again? High school Sophomore? So you're not initiating your college application process yet. Come Junior year I think you'll grasp this situation a little better.

I don't know the situation these kids were in where they felt the need to cheat, but I won't say I haven't done desperate things to pass a test either. I wouldn't have paid 2.5k for someone to take it for me, but that kind of score does command that price range in my opinion. SAT scores mean quite a lot when applying for colleges, a bit too much in my opinion. But that's the problem in itself, how can you assess a HS students knowledge in any other way.

SATs are easy. A decent score can be attained with little or no studying :p
Try not to be too nervous though. That usually makes it worse :(

--It depends on if people are good test-takers or not.--

Also, good job calling yourself "smarter" than a whole 10 people here based on the SAT. *clap*

:o Me, smarter than someone? Impossible. I failed the SAT >_>
I was just trying to be positive and give a confidence boost which I think I failed at doing :(
Well then again I think I scored pretty low on it. Unless I'm thinking of ACT. The science section on that was complete bs.
