Characters for competitive melee

I wanted to get more into competitive smash, but I still have much to learn before I'm ready to compete with my area's top players. I've been playing several characters against my friend who's pretty good to try to get better, including marth, falco, shiek, and ganon. The problem is, ganon is the best out of the characters I play, so I'll pretty much have no chance to ever win a big tournament. Should I focus more on a high tier character and accept that ganon isn't good enough to beat the best players in the game, or would it be better to focus on getting good with my best character?

Ganon's a perfectly good character. He's a little slow, but that can be compensated for.

Play who you are most comfortable with and who you enjoy to play. Almost anyone is viable, it just depends on how much work you want to put in to become the best. Look at Kage(gannon) or Amsa(yoshi), they are rocking low tier characters and placed decent in Apex 2014. Amsa came 9th place I believe.

This, in Ganon's case, Kage was in winners until he got knocked down by PeePee in top 64 so it's definitely possible. Ganon in particular though has meh match ups against higher tiered characters, you've just got to work abit harder.
