Why are people surprised at his appearance? I would have been more surprised if he wasn't playable. I mean, it was a first party franchise made by Miyamoto done within the last few years.

Olimar was a surprise? Lots of people expected him to be playable, and lots of those people expected him to fight with pikmin who run around beside him. He was the most obvious newcomer for Brawl.
