Overall Game Features:

Single Player Campaign

Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MW2

During the single-player campaign, the player will take on the role of Sergeant Gary "Roach" Sanderson, a young member of an elite, multinational commando unit known as Task Force 141. The player character in Call of Duty 4, Sergeant John "Soap" MacTavish, returns as a non-playable character; promoted to captain in the Special Air Service. MacTavish is now the head of the Task Force and Sanderson's superior officer. A third member of the Task Force is Ghost, a mysterious character who conceals his face with a skull-imprinted balaclava.
Special Ops Mode:

A new mode introduced in MW2, Special Ops mode will include two-player cooperative play. Special Ops mode will include 23 action missions similar to Mile High Club which will be more difficult than normal campaign missions and will not be related to the main storyline. It will supposedly pick out certain parts of the single player campaign that "work well with co-op". Missions are unlocked by earning stars, which are acquired by playing levels at certain difficulties. Regular difficulty earns one star, hardened earns two, and veteran earns three. Missions will be divided by groups, called Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, and Echo, the last said to be the hardest. Within the groups there are types of missions such as "Breach and Clear" and "Elimination". There will even be special enemy types, such as those using riot shields, or even Special Ops exclusive "Juggernauts" wearing heavy armor.

The general Spec Ops missions fall into the following categories:

Assault – Sends you through a level to take down targets while avoiding civilians.
Stealth – Has you sneak past enemies.
Wave Defense – Spawn’s five increasingly harder waves – similar to Gears 2 Horde Mode.
Elimination – Drops you into a level with a set number of spawning enemies.
Snowmobile Time Trials – Get to the finish line as quick as possible.
Snowmobile Combat – Race against and shoot your friend.
AC-130 – One man in the gunship handles fire support, while one man on the ground has a laser sight on his rifle calling down death from above.

- Spec Ops mode can be played alone (via split-screen) or with another player online.
- Spec Ops mode will be invite only, there is no matchmaking.
- Each player can play Spec Ops missions at different difficulties. However, you cannot earn stars any higher than the player playing the lower difficulty. For example, If player one is playing on Veteran (three stars) and player two is playing on Regular (one star), both players will only earn one star if they complete the mission. Both players must play on Veteran to earn all three stars on the mission.
Competitive Multiplayer:

Multiplayer across all platforms will be very similar to CoD4 on consoles. You can expect the following:

Game modes:

- Team Deathmatch - Use teamwork to kill enemy players and reach the score limit.

- Free-For-All - No Teams, everyone for himself. Kill everyone.

- Domination - Three flags need to be captured and held for as long as possible. Hold the designated positions to gain points.

- Ground War - Rotating game modes (Team Deathmatch, Domination etc.) with a 18 player limit (on consoles) instead of 12.

- Sabotage - 1 Bomb in the center of the map. Grab it and destroy the enemy objective.

- Headquarters Pro - Capture the headquarters and defend it from the enemy.

- Search and Destroy - Two teams take turns in defending and destroying an objective. Offense will carry a bomb that needs to be planted on either one of the two plant-sights defended by the other teams. On half time teams switch, defense will be offense. There is no respawning.

- Capture the Flag - Capture the enemies flag and return it to your teams base to score points.

- Demolition - Defend and destroy both objectives. Teams switch sides after every round.

- Hardcore Team Deathmatch

- Hardcore Search and Destroy

- 3rd Person Team Deathmatch

- 3rd Person Hardcore Team Deathmatch

- 3rd Person Cage match (Removed for Team Tactical)

- 3rd Person Cage match Hardcore - Third person 1 vs. 1

- Team tactical - Domination, TDM, Demolition, CTF and SnD.

- Barebones Pro (kill streaks disabled)

- Objectives barebones pro (kill streaks disabled)

- Hardcore Domination

- Hardcore Demolition

- Hardcore CTF

- Hardcore Sabotage

- Matchmaking, private matches, party system, invites, voice chat, different ranked playlists, and more.
- A new third person mode and matchmaking playlists has been added to the game.
- In-game host migration has been added. When the host of the game quits, the game will automatically pick the next best host and the game will continue.
- In private games, you can invite your friends/other players and customize the game settings as necessary. These private games are unranked and no XP can be earned.
- New perks are introduced and certain old perks have been removed. Perks can also be upgraded to a “Pro” version which adds new benefits in addition to the normal function. For example, Marathon Pro, in addition giving unlimited sprint, allows you to vault over obstacles faster.
- New Death Streaks are introduced, which gives players a certain perk when they die a certain number of times in a row. An example is Copycat, which copies the perks and weapon setup of the last person who killed you.
- New killstreak rewards have been introduced, from the 4 killstreak Care Package, which drops a random ammo box or killstreak reward to the first player to pick it up, to the powerful 11 killstreak AC-130 of “Death From Above” fame in CoD4.
- Players can now customize their killstreak rewards. They can decide what three rewards to have and in what order they appear in.
- As expected, a ton of new weapons will be introduced to MW2, but some old weapons will not return.
- Pistols aren’t the only secondary weapons now. Shotguns and machine pistols have been made secondaries.
- A riot shield has been added. The riot shield acts as your primary weapon, with which you can block attacks and melee enemies, but significantly slows down your movements and your back is exposed. A secondary weapon can still be equipped, but not wielded at the same time as the shield. When the secondary weapon is out, the shield will be slung on your back and protect your back from bullets.
- New equipments have been introduced that can replace your basic frag grenade.

Some of these include:

- Throwing knives, which can be recovered from your dead enemies.
- Semtex, which acts as the sticky grenade for MW2.
- Tactical Insertion, a flare that provides the owner a new spawn point.

- There will be new attachments for your weapons, such as the Heartbeat Sensor, Thermal Scope, and many other new variations of the Red Dot Sight.
- With the Bling perk, you can now equip more than one attachment on weapons.
- You can now go akimbo and dual wield pistols, SMGs, and certain other weapons.
- A ton of new challenges are introduced to constantly reward players for actions such as double kills, rescuing teammates, stopping an opponent’s killstreak, etc.
- New accolades will be shown after matches to see who had the most knife kills, most UAVs used, and many more.
- A new customizable call sign and emblems will be introduced. These call signs and emblems will show up on screen as you kill opponents. As players gain XP, level up, and perform certain actions, they will unlock new specific emblems. Do you like to make knife kills? You can get a specific emblem for that. There are tons of call signs and emblems to unlock.
- The max rank/level cap has been raised to 70.

Players have to "capture" a nuke (which looks like a bomb site) until they reach 100 points which then the nuke blows up, kills everyone and wins the match for the team which captured it. It does not matter how many players are around the nuke capturing it. The capturing speed does not increase.
- Also, additional Special Ops mode missions are being considered for future DLC. No other information has been revealed as of yet.

A: About 6-7 hours on normal difficulty.

Q: I can't beat [special ops mode mission] on veteran difficulty!
A: Post a reply in this thread and someone will help you.

A: Yes, a demo has recently been released on the XBLM and PSN to download. It contains one level: "Cliffhanger". It is 1 GB in size. You can download the Xbox 360 demo here:

Q: Can you purchase this game from the "games on demand" section on the 360?
A: Yes, for $59.99 here. (I would recommend buying elsewhere because you'll save money.)

Q: Are there going to be anymore map packs for this game?
A: Unfortunately, no. Fourzerotwo confirmed this via Twitter here.

Note: All credit goes to their respected owner(s), I do not take any credit for any of the above information/images/videos etc.

Blegh, tired of those games and practically all shooters. You wanted my opinion.

Contrary to that, I do like that Modern Warfare may be branching off into its own series, because "Call of Duty 6: Modern Warfare 2" is quite a redundant title (albeit not repeating a single word).

I saw the trailer in IGN and the browser title clearly said Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Possibly there will be two CoD series from now on. Call of Duty in World War 2 (Treyarch) and Call of Duty Modern Warfare (Infinity Ward).

Still its only the first teaser trailer so its only speculation.

From the trailer it seems that you can use 4 perks now instead of the 3 from the past 2 alliteration. There was a screen which had stopping power, what seemed too be a duel increase, knives and something else I forgot..

I also doubt Treyarch will stay in WWII. My bet is Korea. Close enough for WWII but weapons which gives a modern warfare feeling.

Sorry for the late response, but CoDMW2 is the name that everyone is calling the game for the time being. It's nothing official at all.

Plus if you watch the actual TRAILER and not the title from some other website, then you will see there is no Call of Duty in it at all.

By the way, even the website is called modernwarfare2. Still no Call of Duty.

Yeah, but seeing as IGN is a reliable source. *shrugs*

It could mean a split or nothing at all. Look at Star Ocean. There is no "Only for Xbox 360", but still no news of it going to the PS3. All speculation, as I said.

How can you not be excited for the game?

Like the OP said, this is going to be the most anticipated game of 2009.

Oh well, your loss!

There are other games to be more anticipated
my gammars are good
The Conduit is already a shooter set in modern times and I hope to God that Xbox 360 users are sick of FPSes

I don't hate the genre but I'm not loosing anything..

Unless the TAR-21, L85, AUG and the G36K are in, then I'll be missing something.

Quoted for truth.

Call of Duty is a pretty meh franchise in my opinion. My friends claim that with every single game there's some sort of "ZOMG NOO FEECHRZ" but I see almost no difference. I play the games and I get bored almost immediately because I can't help but think, "Wait, haven't I played this before?"

And god knows my friends will be hyping/playing this game out the wazoo until/once it comes out, which will only make me more irked at it.

Probably, since the last one was. By using prior knowledge, you can tell Nintendo will probably host the game on their console as well.

No offense, but you sound bias.

Seriously, it's your opinion and you are entitled to it, but saying that there isn't a difference between the games is just absurd. CoD4 and CoD WaW have almost nothing in common besides the same gameplay mechanics.

CoD4 got praised for it's near perfection, so why change the most successful FPS to this day?

Please don't take offense in this, cause I just don't understand how anyone could dislike the game for being too similar to it's predecessors. Could you explain your reasoning behind this? Or do you simply dislike shooters?

Simply put it this way, expect the sequel of a game to be similar/a build on the previous game. It wouldn't make much sense to release a sequel to modern warfare two that is a a futuristic sci-fi game.

If the new game has the same mechanics of the old one why bother with the new one especially when the time between the old one and the new one is so close? That's $50-$60 for basically the same game twice.

I tend to be very picky with my shooters, I don't go for shooters that are prone to series because it breaks up the community each time. Games like Team Fortress, Counterstrike, and UT and Battlefield to a lesser extent have decent communities because of the limited number of entries in their series. BF and UT have slightly less stable communities than Team Fortress due more games in their respective franchises.

There's a difference between wanting to make a sequel as respectable game with similar mechanics to the old one and wanting to make a sequel just to pump out another game because a year has pasted. It's the equivalent to most sports games where every year there's a new one just because it's another year. CoD is the Madden of shooters and it's only a matter of time before people get tired of picking up the same game with a different name and box art every year.

Because sometimes games that are nearly perfected (in terms of shooters) have no need to change the game mechanics, but that's not even the point.

What you fail to understand is how eager people would love to have another Modern Warfare with nothing but a new storyline, more attachments for their guns, new perks, more maps, etc. You don't need to dramatically change anything to make a sequel, remember that.

Stop being biased and think for a second. Think about your favorite game. Lets say Super Smash Bros Melee for an example. A lot of people here on Smashboards see SSBM as the perfect game, and Brawl as inferior. If Sakurai made a Melee 2.0 with more stages and characters, many people like you and others would eat the game up. However, there's always going to be the crowd of biased haters who say that they are just dishing out the SAME GAME (sound familiar?).

While some people may see the game as a cheap cash cow, there are others (and in MW2's case, MANY OTHERS) that are going to see it as the perfect game.

Wow I didn't mean to go this far into detail. Remember you are always entitled to you own opinion, but just at least try to consider being more open minded.

P.S. I'm willing to bet this game will get great reviews and be very popular with gamers, and cash cows don't do that. ;)

CoD4 is my favorite shooter game.
I hope MW2 delivers.
It won't.

Now that you have expectations, MW2 has only 2 options:

1. Reinvent itself
2. Keep the old mechanics and gameplay be criticized for not being "fresh."

The only reason CoD4 stood out in the first place was the dramatic differences between itself and anything that came before it in the series. Slapping a 2 to the title and making a few new maps is not enough to make it better than the original. But that's what many fans seem to want.

If they really wanted to give you new maps, perks and weapons, they'd make it DLC rather forcing their fans to pay for a whole new game. I've never heard anyone say they play CoD4 for the storyline, so I don't know if many people care about that.

I'm not sure how I would feel about a Melee 2.0 after waiting for 7 years, but that wouldn't compare to getting "sequel" that is basically the same game every year. I like Mario Party 4, but there's no way I'd buy Mario Party 5, 6 ,7 and 8. If there was a Melee for every year I'd get sick of it as well. It sounds nice on paper, but spending $50 for a couple of maps, items and characters sounds ridiculous to me.

Cash cows aren't recognized as cash cows the first one or two times, it takes a bit more to make that happen.

Remember when there were hardly any Naruto games? Now look at them, they're every on every platform and reviewers are sick of them. Same with Need for Speed, Madden, WWE, Katamari Damacy If CoD continues to go down this line the same thing will happen. It'll happen more slowly but it will happen if they continue to bring out a sequel every year.

That makes no sense. Why NOT make a sequel to the most successful FPS of this time? Do you have any idea how much people would riot if they only released DLC and not a new game? You are also not getting two key things here: 1. This is Infinity Ward we are talking about. Every game they released so far in the series have been instant hits. They aren't the type that will slap more guns, perks, etc. on Modern Warfare and call it a new game. I guarantee you there will be enough new content to call itself a whole new game. 2. CoD4 got high reviews for both it's online and offline play, so I don't know what you are talking about in terms of people playing for the storyline.

A sequel to a multi GOTY winner isn't a cash cow lol. But yes you are right in the sense that something needs to happen to change up the series, or it risks getting old. This applys to EVERY GAME SERIES though, so just trying to apply it to the CoD series is just bias, especially since the game is still extremely popular. (Most played XBL game to this day?)

Has Halo 4 been announced already?

EDIT: I'm actually kind of annoyed that this probably won't be on wii. The wii seems to have been built specifically for first person shooters more than any other genre, and it feels like a waste of IR technology to not make a wii port of this. Although admittedly, I don't like first person shooters, so I could care less if MW2 gets a wii port.

If nothing else, it would be nice if Microsoft used infrared tech for the Xbox shooters. Anyone who really thinks Duel Analog is the way to go for FPS's has obviously been using that layout for years.

No, if COD4 wasn't on the Wii, what makes you think that MW2 will be? COD3 and WaW were both made by Treyarch hence they're both on the Wii. I don't see IW releasing MW2 on the Wii, sorry.
Except you forget that W@W is being run on a modified version of the Modern Warfare Engine. Infinity Ward has no excuse, now that the engine is proved to be running on the Wii.

Plus they had 2 years to modify and re texture that same engine.

You misunderstood what I said, I never said CoD should not have sequels, that would be ridiculous. What I meant was that they shouldn't make sequels every year because it'll force them to make it bigger and better each time which will get harder and harder to do. One game every year and a half, or two years would give the series enough time to settle before the new big one, which would make the game so much more appealing. DLC does not take a long time to make either [as least not as long as it takes to make a game], but I guess consoles have a more complicated process for DLC so it would be harder than it is for PC. Anyway, what was getting at is that DLC could fill the gap between releases rather than replace them.

I'm pretty sure I said if there was a Melee for every year I'd get bored of it so I don't see why you would say I'm biased against CoD. Besides, I don't own any more than 2 games of one series [with the exception of Pokemon, which is the main reason I stopped buying many games from one series] and if that series has a new entry every year I try to avoid buying it before it's at it's prime.

They could always go with the "We only make games for next-gen consoles" excuse.

That's one of the more popular reasons for why triple-A games don't get wii ports.

Yes this makes sense, but in my (and many others) eye, there has been a 2 year gap since the last CoD was made by Treyarch, and I returned CoD: WaW after the first month. Treyarch and Infinity Ward switch off every year for each CoD, which keeps the series fairly fresh.

It has been 2 years since the first Modern Warfare has come out, so I think a 2 year wait is plenty of time to wait for another.

I apologize because I did come across as being a little harsh. Your first comment just sounded a little biased to me, so I just labeled you as a biased gamer. My mistake.

A new game every year would indeed get boring but lets just try to forget Treyarch is even involved in this, and I think you will see where I am getting at (I hope).

EDIT: I am surprised nobody has even mentioned the fact that Modern Warfare might not even be involved with Call of Duty anyone. Am I the only one who finds that shocking?

They removed "Call of Duty" from the games name because, well, look at your ****ing topic title. It looks STUPID.

It's most likely just going to be Modern Warfare 2

Although, i have to say, I wish they just stayed with numbers. I don't Call CoD: World at War CoDWaW, i call it cod5, it's faster to say and type. I will call this CoD6.

They wouldn't take out the name Call of Duty just because of the title. They could just as easily call it Call of Duty Modern Warfare2 just like how the 4th one was Call of Duty Modern Warfare.

I think there is some other reason for them leaving out Call of Duty. Perhaps to keep the Modern Warfare series fresh?

To step away from the traditional "Call of Duty" series and form a "Modern Warfare" series.

I think that's a bit of a mistake, personally.

If "Call of Duty" refers to WWII shooters from now on, then there's a good chance of losing "Call of Duty" altogether. However, since they'll still have Modern Warfare, there isn't much of a risk. Best case scenario is that the company who makes it will have two highly successful IP's, and worst case is they'll have as many IP's as they started with - one.

Tbh, I think the whole WWII shooter genre is going to start dieing out. Maybe the next one by Treyarch will be Vietnam or something?

People want to play modern shooters, not WWII shooters that have been made billions of times. Heck, Treyarch can burn in a hole for all I care.

I'm not sure why, but it just kind of bugs me that Infinity Ward would take the Call of Duty name out of it, it just feels like they are trying to conceal the fact that it's branched off of CoD 4 because they're ashamed of it or something. I know they originally developed CoD, and they have every right to develop the game without the CoD title, but it just feels wrong...

I definitely understand and feel the shooter fatigue with WWII shooters, but to take potshots at modern warfare, which is basically untouched by reputable game developers, seems unfair. It's a whole 'nother ball game, and it shows. MW1 was very fresh, incredible. It's the first Call of Duty I've owned since the first one.

Good on MW2 for even being made, I say! I for one was angry that they'd gone back to the foxholes ... and Treyarch, for that matter.

Give the game a chance. It'll be a lot fresher than the other war shooter crap we've had to choke down over the hears.

And even more on topic, I'm kind of disappointed by that trailer. For a while I thought my computer was acting up with this weird glitch it had once where it'd play video files as audio files and that I had apparently downloaded some incredibly high-end audio player.

But instead it was just a poor, unrevealing teaser that basically informs you that the game is coming out, and nothing else. Well, gee, thanks. But I already knew that.

Yea I think (as well as many others) that the trailer was dissapointing as well.
