No, you wouldn't say "surpassed" for direct competition. If he said "Is it possible he can compete with Ness?!" then it'd be what you said. Instead he said surpassed as in Lucas must surpass the fallen Ness who won't be in this game. Heck, surpass means to exceed, which would imply Ness is out.
Think, though, why would Sakurai QUESTION Lucas's ability to surpass Ness if Ness weren't returning?

If all that's left of Ness is his Melee appearance as his last appearance, then Lucas can easily surpass him by getting the same updates all the other characters are getting (Final Smashes, Footstooling, etc.)

But the only reason to question if Lucas can surpass Ness would be if Ness were to be getting a major overhaul as well ^_^

Ness is out.
They've gotton rid of the old and added the new!
Hoo-rah!
MOTHER FTW
Then by your standards, Ice Climbers and Mr. G&W are eliminated. Seriously, there's no way that Ness would be ditched since he has appeared in two Smash Bros. games.

Also by those standards, D.K. and Mario are out too. I think the update hinted at Ness being in the game; however if he changed or not, is the big question for me.

I think a grave has been dug. The tombstone with Ness' epitaph has been ordered, and is awaiting shipment.

EDIT: But that doesn't mean he's buried yet!

All you whiners are just whining whines. Ness was lame and had to be drug out behind the barn and shot. I'll bet Lucas was the one who did it too. Just like the real AMERICAN blond kid he is. No one used Ness anyway. They should have gotten rid of him in Melee. Lucas could have been an ad for MOTHER 3 the way Roy was an ad for his game. Seriously, Ness is at LEAST 300% deconfirmed by now, and they'll probably have it on the 4:00 news since it's that important.

He'd question it because we don't know if Lucas will truly exceed Ness or not. He could be better or worse. And those common updates are not the point, but his old status. Thus, he needs to surpass. And with that last part you're jumping to conclusions. Even if Ness was in, he's had no new games, so there's not much to add to him.

The list of deconfirmed characters is very stupid... it lists several characters as "deconfirmed" even though this isn't the case. Pokeballs and Assist Trophies are all well and good, but Tom Nook and Miis are hardly confirmed to be out. If anything, they should be in the "endangered" category with Lip. Also, what the heck is with deconfirming Tingle, Stewart, and Slippy? By their "logic", you might as well deconfirm Peach and Pikachu as well, since they're collectable trophies as well. Sure, it seems unlikely that Sakurai would show a trophy on an unannounced fighter, but it's not impossible. Sakurai's insane, after all.

I don't think Ness is very much lowered that much. In fact Sakauri only said:

Is it possible he can surpass even Ness?!
He actualy made a reference to Ness. So believe it or not Ness still has that chance. There can be room for both characters.

You should put Ness as critical condition, because of Lucas. Because Sakurai always planned to REPLACE Ness with Lucas, which is probably what he did.

you still gotta say to yourself, why would Sakurai show Tingle in trophy form without giving him a profile? any character that wasn't shown on the site or in a video was nowhere to be seen until they were given a profile. i have to say, Tingle is either deconfirmed, or at least in critical condition (same with the Mii's and any other trophies)

so that meens PT Pit Ike and DK are deconfirmed?
Stop with the stupidity...I honestly can't believe your so dense your actually misinterpreting the reason why they are considered disconfirmed to actually say that...

No one can be that ignorant

well their point for deconfirming them cuz they are trophies is because sakurai hasnt showed of any new characters without giving them a bio first. even though he could be mindgaming us, i think its fairly reasonable

I volunteer to make Sheik's gravestone once Zelda's new down-B attack is unveiled.-wiseguy

um how could sheik even be in brawl. all of the the legend of zelda characters use the designs from twilight princess and sheik obviously wasn't in it at all (yes i have played the game and it is awesome). So sheik obviously wouldn't fit in because he or she would just be too outdated if they got eveyone else new character designs and kept sheik the same or changed it dramatically and then a bunch of fan boys would be all wtf.
so obviously sheik isn't gonna be in brawl

who cares about sheik if Ganondorf will definitely be in brawl with his own moveset
even better
maybe you could play as zant or a random shadow creature

Snake? Metaknight?
maybe i should have been more general with my statement. Not necessarily a bio persay, but someway to showcase them as playable characters.

Snake and metaknight were both shown in a trailer where it was clear to see they would be fighters. Even the from the like second and a half of DK in that E3 video shows him playable.

Name me one PC that has been shown so far without it being blatantly obvious they were a PC first.

See my point? Why would he show us those characters like slippy, tingle, etc, first without putting them in a bio or trailer?? Im not sayin its impossible just highly unlikely and thereby worthy to be put in the graveyard. Get the coffins ready!

You, good sir, have OBVIOUSLY not seen this:

Game Informer]GI: Have you been consulted at all for the usage of Link or Sheik or Ganondorf for Smash Bros. Brawl? Aonuma: I’ve been working with Sakurai for a very long time with this new Smash Bros. said:
Actually, my designers did work on the designs for Sheik and Link and Ganondorf. So they submitted the initial designs, and so it would fit in the Smash Bros. Brawl environment, they’ve had to tweak some of the designs. But Sakurai has brought those altered designs to NCL. We’re working very closely with the team of Smash Bros. Brawl to make sure the characters look their best.
So there exists a TP design for Sheik. You were saying?

Name me one PC that has been shown so far without it being blatantly obvious they were a PC first.
I love you BB, but Peach says hi.

among the figments of your imagination
Just because a design is submitted does not mean it automatically makes the final cut. eg: Samurai Goro, Deoxys, Lyn. The article does not guarantee Sheik's inclusion as a PC. Then again, my pointing out of this fact does not seal His/Her/Sheik's fate as an AT or something. Its a good idea not to deal with absolutes until you have the facts. Keep the coffins ready, but don't bury the corpse until its actually dead.

Agreed. However, I would say that based on the fact that 1) Sheik was a PC in the last game, and so many of them have already been reconfirmed and 2) Sheik has a TP design which, so far as I've seen is the ONLY decent reason anyone's presented to why they wouldn't put her back in the game...it seems quite reasonable to assume that Sheik'll be back again. Of course, there's still the chance it won't happen...but I really don't expect it.

Heck, if Sheik is a separate character from Zelda, that would still be fine by me. That's still in the game! And honestly, since the anti-Sheik people all seem to think that TP Zelda and Sheik are incompatible...well then, by all means, don't have them be connected anymore. Just have them be separate with TP Zelda being TP Zelda and Sheik being OoT Zelda's Sheik form...that never transforms back.

I just hope they don't put Ness here with Critical Condition... I just hate how they draw conclusions like this.
They already did.

Ness

Status: Critical Condition
Description: Lucas confirmed. Can comeback as either starter, hidden, or not at all
Thread: Lucas? What? How about Ness. by EricShiznit
As well he should be. Because there is NO way that Ness is getting into Brawl now. He's something like...400% deconfirmed. That would even kill BOWSER.

What do you mean... is obvious the characters here won't make it.
Tom Nook and Tingle still have really good chances of making it just because someone is in the background doesn't mean that they are deconfirmed or just because they are trophy doesn't mean they are deconfirmed.

Sheiks in Brawl, more than likely as Zelda's down special move. The delay in Zelda's "attack update thread" was due to the fact that a twilight-esque Sheik was needed to be designed and put through all of the necessary revamp procedures. So get rid of the coffins, or save them for Ness and Mewtwo.
