Binaural Beats?

I recently came upon an article about binaural beats, which is -if I understood it correctly- when you play two different frequencies (40hz (gamma) through 2.5hz (delta)) at the same time using headphones/earbuds, one in the left ear and the other in the right ear, you hear a third frequency as well, which is the difference between the two.

Example: Playing 12hz (high alpha) and 25hz (low beta) = you also hear 13hz

The result is supposedly a change in the brain, depending on what frequencies you combine, such as relaxation, deep and lucid dreaming, restlessness, becoming agitated, etc.

I'm really curious as to whether this works or not. I'm going to assume that it leans toward psychosomatic.

I plan on randomly putting some frequencies together and messing with them on Thursday, so to keep my experience from being influenced if it IS psychosomatic, I'm not going to check the thread until after I've tried all the different combinations.

Has anyone tried this? Did it work?
And I don't mean "bought-a-premade-combo-online". I mean legit took two frequency clips and put them together and listened for at least ten minutes like I plan to.

*EDIT*:
I hope to God, that someone actually posts something while I'm ignoring this, otherwise I'm gonna feel like an arrogant prick XD

I have heard of studies that show how certain sound frequencies can cause agitation in people who hear them, even if the sounds are nothing more than background noises thrown in underneath a song.

iDose had these, but it turned out they broke the license so all of those are free now.

In short, TOTAL placebo effect.

This isn't exactly what the OP is about, but something similar.

Some trivia from the French film Irreversible

"The first 30 minutes of the film have a background noise with a frequency of 28Hz (low frequency, almost inaudible), similar to the noise produced by an earthquake. In humans, it causes nausea, sickness and vertigo. It was the main cause of people walking out of the theaters during the first part of the film in places like Cannes and San Sebastian. In fact, it was added with the purpose of getting this reaction. "

I'm not so sure about the claims about nausea but it's certainly possible with such low tones, particularly in a movie theater.

That's called Ghost Frequency. Look up what THAT is capable of. Here's a hint: hallucinations.

UPDATE: First of all, I got my days off wrong, so I'll be doing this stuff tonight (Friday evening)

Second:

That's basically what this is, in fact it says that you can add it to music if you don;t like listening to a tone for ten minutes XD

The original Lavender Town soundtrack for the Japanese release of Red and Green had binaural beats that invoked extreme amounts of fear and despair within the children that heard it.

Oooooooooooooo~!

I remember iDoser, it did nothing (Except making my legs fall asleep at some point). If this is anything like it (which by the sound of it, it is) I doubt you will get any strong eefect out of it

I've had some effect from binaural beats but it may be because droning sounds are a good meditation aid to begin with more so than a mind trick to perceive non existent frequencies. in that sense it's not entirely a placebo but there are probably better things you could be doing, listening to two out of tune sine waves for long periods can be a little grating which is counter intuitive to the idea to begin with

There are also isochronic tones. I forget exactly how they differ. I downloaded around a dozen months back and had mixed results. One made me feel like I was deep within myself after it was done. It was taking me tens of seconds to fully adjust to the outside world after opening my eyes. It was interesting and a little uncomfortable. Others have brought me to states encroaching bliss, but never quite getting there. These same tones have done nothing at other times. You really have to be relaxed and in a meditative state of mind. If you're distracted or trying to force it it's not going to work. Largely placebo, but placebo can be fun.
