Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is just incredible.

I really liked Bowser's Inside Story, too. Wasn't nearly as good, though.

Easily the first Paper Mario for me. Had the best atmosphere, music, characters, etc., in my opinion.

Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door is the best I've played. IT IS BETTER THAN SMRPG. This is not open for negotiation.

Mine is Bowser's Inside Story for the handheld systems and Paper Mario: TTYD for the consoles. They both have fantastic music and gameplay.

wasn't really a fan of Paper Mario.
M&L were OK, but SM:RPG was were it's at.

I've only played BIS and TTYD, and whilst I preferred BIS due to my love of Bowser I think TTYD was the over superior game.

I've seen footage of SMRPG and I can't see how anyone would think that game is best without nostalgia. The graphics aren't very good, and the battle system is really underveloped compared to the later RPGs.

Are there any people here who played the game in recent years after playing the other RPGs and still thought it was the best?

Nostalgia is pretty much the only thing Seven Stars has going for it.

It has weaker graphics, less content, and a less dynamic battle system than future RPGs.

To people like me who didn't play it as a kid, it has no draw over other RPGs apart from the hype it gets from nostaligia bias.

Super mario RPG had weaker graphics, yes; obviously later games will look better as they are on more advanced systems. On their own SM: RPG's graphics aren't anything special or anything to write home about, but that being said I didn't find the game too look too bad visually nor did the graphics really hinder the gameplay in anyway in my experience with the game so I'm alright with the graphics.

Did SMRPG have less content? Perhaps, I really don't know myself. As far as side stuff/optional stuff goes I don't recall SMRPG having that much more or less compared to later Mario RPGs. When it came to collectibles there may have been less stuff to collect, although I don't ever really care to get a 100% collection rate in any Mario RPG, or for most games for that matter, so that's not much of an issue to me.

The gameplay in SMRPG is less dynamic, sure, but that's not really SMRPG's fault as it is the first Mario RPG, so naturally sequels should be able to build and improve off of a predecessor's concepts and gameplay (doesn't always happen but oh well). And SMRPG is a game I still find fun to play as it is the most challenging Mario RPGs, timing attacks and defense still helps to make battles more engaging in SMRPG, and I'm a big fan of more traditional RPGs as I grew up on them.

Does nolstalgia affect my view of the game? To some degree it probably does, although that could probably be said with almost anything that is older or considered a classic. Almost everyone gets blinded by nolstalgia to some degree. That plus I still think that's somewhat of a compliment towards the game, as no one would have any nolstalgia toward a game that is bad by any standard.

Objectively, SMRPG has been surpassed by some of the later Mario RPGs in some important aspects, sure. That being said Super Mario RPG was and still is a great game IMO, and all of the greatness of later Mario RPGs is thanks to SMRPG. In some ways I do like SMRPG more than other games. SMRPG was the best when it came to secrets I believe. It took me years until I knew the casino even existed. The Culex battle is still probably one of the cooler battles in the entire series (I'm a huge FF nerd so yeah)

I loved SMRPG's graphics and how they kinda looked like clay models or people made out of cotton balls. I never really got into the Mario RPGs but if I had to pick one it would probably be Paper Mario on the 64 or SMRPG

Imo, out of the ones I've played, I'd have to say my ranking looks like this:
1. Paper Mario: TTYD
2. Paper Mario 64
3. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
4. Super Mario RPG
*Insert HUGE gap*
5. Super Paper Mario

While Super Mario RPG is a great game, I feel it is a bit overrated. I also haven't played any of the DS M&L games. I'd imagine they would easily be above Super Paper Mario though.

It's fair to say that Super Paper Mario was a prety poor game, especially compared to the standard set by the previous two titles in the series.

It just seemed incredibly lazy or rushed. It basically was just an inferior 2d Mario platformer with paper graphics.

I played TTYD but I never played 64. I'm thinking of getting it, but without nostalgia bias I'm not sure if it will have anything over its sequel. I just really loved TTYD and want a similair experience, so if it is considered of equal quality without nostialgia bias then I may get it.

That is not a full RPG (call it ARPG).

I'm playing Super Mario RPG now! Mario & Luigi ~ Superstar Saga was my last game, and was very good. If you can play it, try it.

I'd have to say the original Paper Mario, which I ironically still have to finish.

I don't care what anyone says, I liked Super Paper Mario, but not as an standard RPG.

I like SPM too. TTYD and PM were better, but SPM was not bad imo. The story was really engaging for one.

I think you're a bit disillusioned there. It had a great story, and the character development had a lot of impact on people. The extra optional content also gave a good sense of accomplishment. It was an awesome game for its time, and has aged very well.

People are nostalgic about it for a reason...they're not gonna have good memories for a bad game.

I've played and beaten Super Mario RPG and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. I've played some Paper Mario as well. So far, my favorite of the games has to be Super Mario RPG; the story, the characters and the humor is just so well polished, and the battle system became somewhat of a standard in other RPG Mario games (timed hits, etc.). It wasn't the largest game as far as RPGs go, but the depth for character customization, the battle system, and even paying homage to Final Fantasy (since Square helped develop the game) really makes it quite the masterpiece.

7 stars was one of my favorite games. Ever.

However, I think that I will say that Paper Mario (1) was the best, because the developers of that game made a simple RPG game very challenging and fun (at least to me, I think I was 12 when I first completed the game, not 100% though). Gaining classic Mario enemies as allies and discovering an intricately detailed & connected Mushroom Kingdom was incredible.

Both of these. I've yet to play any DS Mario RPGs, but I want to one day!

SMRPG: Legend of the Seven Stars was too good, my favorite of all the Mario RPGs I've played hands down. I still play through it from time to time, the memories! :)

Super Mario RPG. Hands down, nothing touches it. I do love the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi series though.

Oh god... where to start... I grew up with Paper mario ttyd and M&L SuperStar Saga... but this time, I'm going for M&L Partners In Time. The Story, gameplay for Mario, Baby Mario, Luigi, and Baby Luigi is so good. Very close second is ttyd.

Even though I never actually completed The Thousand Year Door, I really believe that it is the best in the series. I played about halfway through when I was young, then got bored with my Wii and stupidly sold it, something I really regret. However, I have looked up the rest of the story, and dang, things got REAL! Also, I loved all the quirky little bits in the story, and the gameplay in general was fun all the way through.
Honorable mention goes to Bowser's Inside Story for getting to play as Bowser, final battle which is my favorite of all time, and memorable characters such as Fawful, but overall it didn't stand out as much as TTYD

From best to worst (personal preference, obviously, as there's no "best game" in the RPG series objectively speaking):

Bowser's Inside Story
Superstar Saga
Super Mario RPG
Super Paper Mario
The Thousand Year Door
Dream Team
Partners in Time
Paper Mario (64)

Haven't played Sticker Star yet.
