WHO IS AZRAEL?
Azrael was an original character created by McLeodGaming forum user Phratt intended to appear in Super Smash Flash 2 as a playable character prior to the game's roster rework. Notably, Azrael appears in the game's initial trailer alongside Sora and Goku. Azrael and the 3 other OCs have since been cut, but he has not been forgotten, being referenced in SSF2's 2020 April Fool's prank with a slight redesign. Azrael also appears as a playable character in CMC+, a mod for Super Smash Bros. Crusade using his old SSF2 sprites.
Azrael was also notable for being the only SSF2 original character with a backstory, heavily inspired by The Matrix.
In the year 2750, Humans are being ravaged by an incredibly deadly virus spawned by an even deadlier alien race (The Karas). In an attempt to expose a path to salvation the world's top scientists have decided to create an Artificial Universe where it is manipulatable by a computer and can be watched at all times from any angle. They created their own Space and time continuum.
The program went out of control though, as the alien race subsided and receded into other planets the government continued the project for more research. Clearly the goal of the whole mission changed, profit with a capital P was the main objective thus scientists were ordered to cheat their own creation to create money for the real universe. Inside this "Program" dubbed UniverseV2 (all planets and places in this universe acquired the suffix V2) People who are a threat to the experiment have to be exterminated. This goes for people who figure out the experiment, those who gain manipulating abilities naturally (via glitches), and those who bring speculation that may lead to a leak. The Person who is Hired to Kill off these people without a Trace is injected with Nanobots capable of reading brain waves and using the commands sent by the brain to manipulate this virtual world created by the humans. Azrael is that Person.
Born inside of a country where war obliterated everyone in its path, including his parents, Karl Siriso luckily stumbles upon a secret laboratory and wasn't killed, but instead experimented on and equipped to kill. Because of his ability to manipulate the space and time of DimensionV2, Azrael has Inhuman abilities compared to the residents of EarthV2. Killing a Person is as easy as killing a fly, unless they can Manipulate Space and time just like him.
BUT WHY THOUGH?
He is That Person, how could you not want him? Azrael uses a scythe which so far no character uses. He can summon ghosts, disappear, and do all sorts of weird space manipulation based on his backstory. Sense Azrael is heavily inspired by The Matrix, he could also take some inspiration from iconic scenes from the films, such as having his spotdodge animation be the iconic bullet time dodge, and some normals could derive from Neo or Smith's combat styles.
HE LITERALLY DOESN'T EXIST AND WILL NEVER APPEAR IN MULTIVERSUS
Okay so here's the thing; Multiversus already has an OC in it. There is precedent. Furthermore, The Matrix is a Warner Bros. property. While I hope Neo himself makes an appearance, there were difficulties securing the rights to the character for fighting games in the past. As revealed by Ed Boon, Neo was intended to appear in Injustice 2, but plans fell through. Assuming the Multiversus team wants to include Matrix content but is unable to for whatever reason, That Person is here and is a more than acceptable substitute.
AGAIN, HE DOESN'T EXIST. HOW ABOUT STAGES AND MUSIC?
What's Scrimblo Bimblo's stage, huh? Regardless, there are quite a few stage options. Azrael could have an original stage based on The Matrix. For example, I imagine the stage's main platform could be a sideways turned building floating through the air, it will be raining, and everything will be tinted green. The other option is to go to Disney and license Dive to the Heart as a nod to SSF2's trailer but that's absolutely not happening.
For music, he could again, have original compositions inspired by The Matrix, but they could also just license The Matrix soundtrack. CMC uses the last phrase of Wake Up by Rage Against the Machine (famously used during the end credits of The Matrix) as Azrael's victory theme, and Dragula (Hot Rod Herman Remix) as his unlock theme. Interestingly, the song "Burly Brawl" was used in Super Smash Flash 1 as the background music for the appropriately named Burly Brawl mode. In my mind, "Mona Lisa Overdrive" is Azrael's theme song, but in a way, "Burly Brawl" is as close as you can get to an official Azrael theme.
