I'd say the Vault Boy costume is in favor of Doomguy. I guess you could argue they'd have saved it for his reveal, but it still shows Bethesda is willing to work with Nintendo (and so is Microsoft with Banjo & Kazooie), and it shows Nintendo is willing to add content from extremely violent and gory games.

That's what I mean; if Doomguy was going to be playable, I'm sure they would have held off on revealing the Vault Boy costume until after he's revealed.

I say it does help him in the next Smash game, though. Plus, I'm also sure support for him would increase a lot by then.

Well, that was an intriguing direct. Seems like a return to true form. Hopefully it'll keep up like that.

Pyra/Mythra look interesting and their reveal was amusing. I am honestly not sure of Doom Slayer's chance anymore. The last wo might be another First Party and a Japanese Company character to end the pass if you ask me.

If he happens then great, if not then oh well. That's my stance on things.

I can't imagine they wouldn't have some classic Doom grunts in there, especially with him being more vocal in Eternal

Samus was also more vocal in her Varia Suit in Metroid Prime and Other M, but regular Samus is depicted as mute in Smash. Doomslayer for the most part has largely been portrayed as mute throughout most of the series beyond grunts or screams of pain. Him being mute in Smash wouldn't be egregiously out of character

Doomguy is technically silent, even if those cutscenes in Eternal are just a two times thing
Or if you somehow count it: The text lines in Doom 2 RPG and Doom Resurrection coming from the player's character and maybe that one secret short movie from the Saturn version of Quake, based off some webcomic or something.
Or maybe the text/chat lines from his Quake 3 bot, Doom, which aren't unused like the voiced lines in the PS2 version.
Speaking of Quake 3, he had a unique sound for his taunt and if we were going by fanservice and personality fitting sounds, the "hehee" Skulltag sound is something i hope id considers to "canonize".
It also appears that another Doom Eternal director's commentary stream was delayed yet again, this time being because of the horrible events happening in Texas.
On a different note, Doom Eternal was also nominated for for the SXSW gaming awards.

I wonder if Pyra and Mythra being chosen over Rex has anything to do with how some people feel about Rex as a character.
At least because i'm not really into Xenoblade at all but from (Using second hand info, so correct me on this one) what i saw from people i follow that liked and/or played XB2, they don't like the character that much.
Although i also assume it's more of a localization/translation thing possibly.

I got a question; I know Bethesda and id Software are owned by the same company but id Software seems to be the one still in charge of the Doom series while Bethesda is the one handling games like Fallout. In fact, Doom is listed as a trademark of id Software instead of Bethesda.

So does this mean id Software and Bethesda are kind of doing their own thing separate from each other? Because if so, then Vault Boy being a costume might not really have any effect on Doom Slayer's chances.

Yeah hard to say. I believe Microsoft and Mojang are two distinct credits in Smash so that's probably a good sign?

Very possible. Same thing also with SEGA and Atlus. Plus, looking at the news part on Vault Boy, it even had Bethesda listed instead of its parent company ZeniMax. This to me seems like if even kind of Doom content was added in Smash, they'd likely have id Software listed as the owner.

Right now, you're thinking of Crash from Quake 3 but there's also Kira Morgan from Doom 2 RPG, the female leads from Tom Hall's Doom Bible (Their names were later reused for Rise of The Triad characters) and i guess that one Doom movie or Arlene from the novels.
I think a "Doomgal" could work if you give Crash her own adventure (Like an expansion) and she has her own weapons, items, upgrades etc to allow more experimentation and creativity with gameplay.
She doesn't have to be another powerfull Slayer and we all know she will not replace Doomguy, either because he's an FPS icon or because ZeniMax might as well see the Doomslayer as a golden goose of marketing.
It also happens that Doomguy lacking a name was because Romero saw him as a blank slate, hence why he wasn't always "complete" as a character.
And the idea of the power fantasy in the new games is mostly a result of fanservice, influenced by memes around the games, otherwise, it also says something about making Doomguy seem powerfull when you take away his face bleeding in the HUD and no longer make his armor and tech "outdated".
There's a lot of things about the new games that already make them very different from the classics and i feel like a female Doom marine just need a good execution and reason to be made.
Some people are obviously going to make this political or about outrage and culture wars but if you put all that aside, it doesn't really matter.

I got a question; I know Bethesda and id Software are owned by the same company but id Software seems to be the one still in charge of the Doom series while Bethesda is the one handling games like Fallout. In fact, Doom is listed as a trademark of id Software instead of Bethesda.

So does this mean id Software and Bethesda are kind of doing their own thing separate from each other? Because if so, then Vault Boy being a costume might not really have any effect on Doom Slayer's chances.

I don't think anything was really complicated in the first place. Just a little confusing.
Indeed. People kept referring to Doomguy as a Bethesda property, which annoyed me to no end.

It's why I wrote up that whole-arse fighter reveal trailer for the Doom Slayer a month or so ago, just so I could shove "id Software" into the end-of-video rightsholders billings where some rando had placed "Bethesda" in it for their own concept writeup.

I can see Doomguy being under id Software, because even with Bethesda/ZeniMax's purchase and ownership, some people would still find it weird to refer to Doom as "Bethesda".
According to the last Doom Eternal Director's Commentary stream, one type of encounters is refered to Escalation Encounters.
Seems to be a take on the current gore nests where the early fights are easier and difficulty ramps up (At least i think).
And apparently, the Crucible in the Fortress of Doom and the Divinity Machine will be relevant to the plot of part 2.

I can actually picture Doom Slayer being another Steve situation as a whole. People look at the interview and take it as if a character is not going to be in when no such ting was ever stated or even implied in the interview.

Yeah, it's possible that the guy was doing misdirection. It would be similar to Grant Kirkhope telling fans "not to get their hopes up" about Banjo in Smash. In other words, hyping responsibly.

The CacoMii incident obviously took advantage of these uncertainties, for little gain other than e-peen.

So I thought I'd try my hand at making a Doomslayer moveset.
General Playstyle
Heavy, resource based, zoner with decent speed. He lacks powerful out of shield options and has a relatively weak disadvantage to compensate for his extremely powerful neutral game.

Stats:
Weight - 112
Air Speed - 1,115
Fall Speed - 1700
Fast Fall - 2800
Dash - 1760
Run Speed - 1700

Gimmick:
The Slayer's guns use ammo as a finite resource. All guns share the same ammo gauge, which is depicted as 6 bullets. Each gun depletes ammo at a different rate. Ammo is not replaced automatically but instead is gained through landing melee attacks.

Specials:
Up + B: Blood Punch
The Slayer jumps up straight vertically before then quickly landing with a punch. It's pretty similar to Incineroar's up B but is faster and the downward slam is straight downward rather than a diagonal arc.

Down + B: Arsenal
The Slayer's Down B functions similar to Shulk's Monado Arts, cycling through 5 different weapons by repeatedly tapping B or by opening up a menu by holding B. Unlike Shulk's Monado Arts, switching weapons does not give i-frames, and there is no time limit or internal cooldown for switching or using different weapons. The weapons are as follows
  • Shotgun (close/mid range)
  • Heavy Rifle (long range poking/zoning)
  • Rocket Launcher (long range zoning/killing)
  • Flamethrower (close range / trapping)
  • BFG (killing)

At the beginning of each match, the Slayer has the Shotgun equipped as default

B / Side + B: Fire / Alt Fire
The Slayer gets a different set of B/Side B moves depending on the weapon equipped.

Pistol: The Slayer only defaults to this if he does not have the ammo to use his current equipped weapont's a single pistol shot similar to Joker's Gun, but unlike Joker he cannot move while using it. The Side B and B function exactly the same for this weapon.

Shotgun: Consumes 1 Ammo
Shotgun Blast :
The Slayer shoots a cone projectile in the direction he's facing. The move comes out very fast and has decent damage but low knockback. If used in the air the Slayer will be pushed in the opposite direction he's facing, which can be used for recovery or for aerial mixups.

Explosive Shot [Side B]:
The Slayer shoots a grenade from his gun which travels in a short arc, exploding upon contact or after a short time. This move functions pretty much exactly like the Mii Gunner's grenade launcher move.

Heavy Rifle: Consumes 1 Ammo
Burst Shot :
The Slayer fire a burst of 3 bullets from his rifle (similar to Arsene's gun) which deals medium damage but has low hitstun. The Slayer can hold B to continuously fire bursts and can move freely while using this move.

Scoped Shot [Side B]:
The Slayer aims down his rifle for a highly damaging precision shot. When using this move the Slayer will stand still and an aiming reticle will pop up near him. It functions somewhat similarly to Snake's Nikita except the reticle does not automatically activate when it contacts an opponent, and the Slayer instead must manually release the B button. A burst of 3 gunshots appears where the reticle was which deals heavy damage and knockback and does decent damage to shields. The move can be cancelled by pressing the shield button.

Rocket Launcher: Consumes 2 Ammo
Rockets :
The Slayer shots a rocket which travels straight forward. It functions similarly to a Samus heavy rockets but travels slower and has more damage/knockback.

Remote Rocket [Side B]:
The Slayer fires a rocket which travels straight forward at a fast speed and explodes when the B button is released again. Functions similarly to the Mii Gunner's stealth bomber.

Flamethrower: Consumes 1 Ammo
Flamespit :
The Slayer shoots a jet of flames from his weapons which gradually grows weaker as time goes on. This functions similarly to Bowser or Charizard B moves, and consumes ammo at a rate of 1 per second (the ammo consumption and flame weakening function separately)

Hellfire Blast [Side B]:
Hold B to charge (cannot store charge or move). The Slayer shoots a fireball that travels forward horizontally and does decent damage. Functions similarly to Corrin's B move but without the option of a follow up attack and does not stun.

BFG: Consumes 6 Ammo
Doom [B/Side B]:
Both inputs do the same thing. A crescent blue beam travels from the gun horizontally at extremely fast speeds. It functions similarly to a fully charged Robin Thoron except the projectile is not a beam.

Tilts
All of the Slayer's tilts except for his jab replenishes [1 Ammo]. His jab does not replenish ammo.

Jab: Punch, punch, uppercut. Pretty straightforward jab among the Smash cast.

Smash Attacks
Forward Smash: Charging this move shows the Slayer revving his chainsaw, which has a hitbox similar to Mewtwo's shadowball while charging (this applies to all of the Slayer's chainsaw attacks). The chainsaw is a multihit move that deals lots of damage with medium knockback and replenishes [3 Ammo]

Up Smash: A thrusting uppercut with his chainsaw blade. Multihit move that deals lots of damage and launches the opponents directly vertical. Replenishes [3 Ammo]

Down Smash: The Slayer thrusts his chainsaw blade at a downward arc in one direction (similar to Sephiroth's down Smash but with far less range). This move is useful for 2 framing because charging the smash attack has its own hitbox similar to Ness's down Smash.

Aerials
All aerials replenish 1 ammo.

Nair: The Slayer does a 360 swing with the Crucible (speed is similar to Min Min dragon Nair)
Bair: The Slayer slams his elbow forward
Fair: The Slayer swings both arms downwards similar to DK (this move spikes)
Dair: The Slayer fires his shotgun straight downward propelling up upward slately (consumes 1 ammo) if he has no ammo then he fires a pistol shot downwards which doesn't propel him any distance.

Grab/Throws
All of the Slayer's throws replenish [2 Ammo]
Pummel: The Slayer punches his opponent in the head with a straight punch
Up Throw: The slayer uppercuts the opponent launching them upwards
Side Throw: The Slayer stabs his opponent with the crucible then throws them forward
Back Throw: The Slayer stabs his opponent with the crucible then throws them backwards
Down Throw: The Slayer tosses his opponent to the ground and uses his chainsaw on them, which ends with them being propelled in a small arc horizontally

So I thought I'd try my hand at making a Doomslayer moveset.
General Playstyle
Heavy, resource based, zoner with decent speed. He lacks powerful out of shield options and has a relatively weak disadvantage to compensate for his extremely powerful neutral game.

Stats:
Weight - 112
Air Speed - 1,115
Fall Speed - 1700
Fast Fall - 2800
Dash - 1760
Run Speed - 1700

Gimmick:
The Slayer's guns use ammo as a finite resource. All guns share the same ammo gauge, which is depicted as 6 bullets. Each gun depletes ammo at a different rate. Ammo is not replaced automatically but instead is gained through landing melee attacks.

Specials:
Up + B: Blood Punch
The Slayer jumps up straight vertically before then quickly landing with a punch. It's pretty similar to Incineroar's up B but is faster and the downward slam is straight downward rather than a diagonal arc.

Down + B: Arsenal
The Slayer's Down B functions similar to Shulk's Monado Arts, cycling through 5 different weapons by repeatedly tapping B or by opening up a menu by holding B. Unlike Shulk's Monado Arts, switching weapons does not give i-frames, and there is no time limit or internal cooldown for switching or using different weapons. The weapons are as follows
  • Shotgun (close/mid range)
  • Heavy Rifle (long range poking/zoning)
  • Rocket Launcher (long range zoning/killing)
  • Flamethrower (close range / trapping)
  • BFG (killing)

At the beginning of each match, the Slayer has the Shotgun equipped as default

B / Side + B: Fire / Alt Fire
The Slayer gets a different set of B/Side B moves depending on the weapon equipped.

Pistol: The Slayer only defaults to this if he does not have the ammo to use his current equipped weapont's a single pistol shot similar to Joker's Gun, but unlike Joker he cannot move while using it. The Side B and B function exactly the same for this weapon.

Shotgun: Consumes 1 Ammo
Shotgun Blast :
The Slayer shoots a cone projectile in the direction he's facing. The move comes out very fast and has decent damage but low knockback. If used in the air the Slayer will be pushed in the opposite direction he's facing, which can be used for recovery or for aerial mixups.

Explosive Shot [Side B]:
The Slayer shoots a grenade from his gun which travels in a short arc, exploding upon contact or after a short time. This move functions pretty much exactly like the Mii Gunner's grenade launcher move.

Heavy Rifle: Consumes 1 Ammo
Burst Shot :
The Slayer fire a burst of 3 bullets from his rifle (similar to Arsene's gun) which deals medium damage but has low hitstun. The Slayer can hold B to continuously fire bursts and can move freely while using this move.

Scoped Shot [Side B]:
The Slayer aims down his rifle for a highly damaging precision shot. When using this move the Slayer will stand still and an aiming reticle will pop up near him. It functions somewhat similarly to Snake's Nikita except the reticle does not automatically activate when it contacts an opponent, and the Slayer instead must manually release the B button. A burst of 3 gunshots appears where the reticle was which deals heavy damage and knockback and does decent damage to shields. The move can be cancelled by pressing the shield button.

Rocket Launcher: Consumes 2 Ammo
Rockets :
The Slayer shots a rocket which travels straight forward. It functions similarly to a Samus heavy rockets but travels slower and has more damage/knockback.

Remote Rocket [Side B]:
The Slayer fires a rocket which travels straight forward at a fast speed and explodes when the B button is released again. Functions similarly to the Mii Gunner's stealth bomber.

Flamethrower: Consumes 1 Ammo
Flamespit :
The Slayer shoots a jet of flames from his weapons which gradually grows weaker as time goes on. This functions similarly to Bowser or Charizard B moves, and consumes ammo at a rate of 1 per second (the ammo consumption and flame weakening function separately)

Hellfire Blast [Side B]:
Hold B to charge (cannot store charge or move). The Slayer shoots a fireball that travels forward horizontally and does decent damage. Functions similarly to Corrin's B move but without the option of a follow up attack and does not stun.

BFG: Consumes 6 Ammo
Doom [B/Side B]:
Both inputs do the same thing. A crescent blue beam travels from the gun horizontally at extremely fast speeds. It functions similarly to a fully charged Robin Thoron except the projectile is not a beam.

Tilts
All of the Slayer's tilts except for his jab replenishes [1 Ammo]. His jab does not replenish ammo.

Jab: Punch, punch, uppercut. Pretty straightforward jab among the Smash cast.

If the BFG's a B move, then what would his Final Smash be?

Not sure! I don't play with Final Smashes so I don't really give them much thought, I just thought it'd be a shame for the BFG not to be more accessible within his moveset similar to how would've been a shame if Terry didn't somehow have access to Power Geyster and Buster Wolf.

Terry already gets both Power Geyser and Buster Wolf when "Go!" is activated at a certain damage threshold (said threshold escapes my memory atm), and so long as you can remember their prescriptive command inputs.

Final Smashes are usually for the character's most powerful attacks and with the BFG being Doom Slayer's most powerful weapon in the games, it's obvious that that should be his Final Smash.

the threshhold is 100% and I’m not sure what you’re trying to say here

Final Smashes are usually for the character's most powerful attacks and with the BFG being Doom Slayer's most powerful weapon in the games, it's obvious that that should be his Final Smash.
There’s a bigger BFG he uses to blow a hole in Mars

Which still demonstrates how the BFG is his ultimate (no pun intended) weapon. He doesn't really need it to be more accessible in this moveset when he's got plenty of other weapons he can use.

He doesn't need it, but I think it'd be cool? It's not like it's an inaccessible gun in Doom you use it plenty of times. It's still gated in the moveset example I listed by using up literally his entire ammo bar. And yes the bigger BFG that blew up mars could be a final smash while he still has the regular BFG for his standard moves.

Thing is, it doesn't come with him. You still have to find the gun first so in the meantime, you gotta use whatever else you can find until you get the gun.

I don't agree with it already being usable from the start. BFG overall is supposed to be his strongest weapon, which is usually fitting for a Super (or Final Smash in this case). Making it a standard move doesn't do it any justice.

  1. You mentioned that it's a shame how Terry doesn't have access to Power Geyser and Buster Wolf as shown in his Final Smash, despite the "Go!" Mechanic providing those exact two moves when the correct command inputs are made.
  2. If you're referring to the BFG-10,000, that thing literally uses the BFG-9000 as a power source, making the whole affair pretty redundant.
IMO, if you were looking into making one of the Doom Slayer's power weapons into a Down-B move, the Unmaykr is a perfect candidate that would appropriately leave the Final Smash slot open for the BFG.

So I just got Doom Eternal, and am having a blast of an anti-demon crusade! It's a lot more difficult than other titles in the series, and the control scheme seems a bit complex, but overall, it's one hell of a good challenge! I'm currently at the Cultist Base.
