Generally speaking, M-rated game titles are fully acknowledged in Ultimate's English version strictly when they have a proper fighter.
Joker's reveal trailer doesn't have an M-rating attached to it despite name-dropping Persona 5. I believe around the time of the Hero moveset presentation is when the ESRB ratings reflected higher rated games than Ultimate.

I just beat the first Doom game.

I gotta admit, it's one of my favorite games now. In fact, I got so hooked on it that I put the 2016 Doom game down until I finish it. It's a real classic.

It's really a shame that Sakurai didn't add Doom Slayer to Smash Ultimate (though I might have an idea why).

I just beat the first Doom game.

I gotta admit, it's one of my favorite games now. In fact, I got so hooked on it that I put the 2016 Doom game down until I finish it. It's a real classic.

In fairness, playable Western third parties are a very, very new thing that seemed risky for this installment. Luckily it's paying off so far, though even then they haven't left the Microsoft umbrella yet.
I don't think M content would be an issue either, since :ultbayonetta: also has gore in her games, so it boils down to bad negotiation timing/spots being taken.

Yeah, M content is definitely not an issue. Despite what some people say, Doom Slayer's move set doesn't have to have gore in it.

This is just a guess but I do think it's possible that either Sakurai or Nintendo felt that Vault Boy's design is more appealing to the Japanese fans than Doom Slayer's. Between the two designs, they probably felt that Vault Boy's cartoon mascot design overall fits better with their theme than Doom Slayer's dark, serious design, Some people might bring up Snake but he has the advantage of being created in Japan. Doom Slayer is about as Western as you can get.

But who knows? Banjo & Kazooie, and Steve could lead to that changing in the future.

True but I'm not sure if this means he appeals to the Japanese fanbase. Even Nathan Drake got one and I doubt he's that popular among the Japanese fanbase.

Still, a lot can change from now to the next game. In fact, I say he could very well have a chance to be in the next game.

Just wanted to point this out, but the "gore" in bayonetta isn't really squeamish - all of them just explode on death without any fanfare. Which is very much different compared to stuff like DOOM/MK where kills are explicitly graphic (head stomping, decapitation etc).

Whether or not you believe that to be a barrier for inclusion is another thing, but i don't think its fair to use bayonetta as an example that the gate for graphically violent stuff is open. Well, until it happens, anyway.

Even if the new Doom games are gorier than ever, i always get the impression that the series is meant to be a goofier and self-aware sort of gore, so it's made to be "acceptable" even if it feels a bit different from the original games being once "counter culture" or something.
Also has anyone made any comments about the recently revealed Fury Bowser and the idea of Doomguy fighting him?
Sounds like an easy crossover concept but i've yet to see a drawing or something.
In other news, there's the slime event in Doom Eternal and there's a new mobile spin off that is probably not even finished now, since Bethesda and id haven't said anything about it.

So I've been thinking of how a trailer for the slayer might go down... Here's how I'm imagining it.

It starts out with Villager and Isabelle following Steve into the Nether. It doesn't take long for them to get distracted, leaving Steve behind while they go harvest some mushrooms. As they wander off, the Nether gradually transitions into a more realistic hell. Eventually, something big stomps over to them, and a large shadow looms over them. They look up to see a Baron of Hell. Villager has a terrified expression, while Isabelle doesn't recognize it as a threat and offers it a mushroom as a token of friendship. The demon is confused for a moment by that, but winds up for an attack...

Cue the sound of the super shotgun loading.

Doomguy blasts the demon, leading into his reveal splash screen as a new remix of At Doom's Gate kicks in. The cinematic continues for a bit with him fighting some more demons, then transitions into an in-game montage of his moves, any alt skins, and his final smash, just showing off how much of a brutal badass he is.

And then at the end, we get a brief scene of him with Villager, Isabelle, and Steve, roped into something cutesy like a tea party, trying to fit in.

Not a Terrible Idea, could work to confuse the audience.

I'm...not sure about this. I don't think it showcases what kind of series Doom is. It starts off with characters and a setting that are way too different from the Doom series and then it ends with him trying to fit in? That's just...not Doom enough. I think it should be more action packed with references to his series.

Well, I summarized. They'd have wandered into a traditional Doom-style hell by the time he shows up, and then there'd be a bit of brutal (but relatively bloodless, for rating issues) violence, plus showing off his moveset.

The end sequence would be more of an end credits scene type joke, like the Avengers having Shawarma after the movie. Something silly after all the epic violence is over

The reason I think this would work is twofold... First, Nether, Hell, that's obvious. It's the most literal hell we've got to work with that's already in Smash, and since Minecraft and Doom now have the same parent company, rights shouldn't be an issue. Then Isabelle and Villager as a reference to the Animal Crossing and Doom fandom memes, plus Doomguy protecting an adorable critter as a reference to Daisy.

The only problem I see is the sort of details that'd be included with this small trek to Hell.

Because aside from the usual craggy rocks and lava, Doom Eternal's Hell tends to have a lot of this going on:

If we look at the original games, Hell is like a fusion of different themes and assets going on, some of these elements even fitting visually with some enemy designs.
There's some "versatility" to Hell in Doom, that i think even played a role with the creation of stuff like a lot of wads or custom monsters.
That's one reason why i think a MetaDoom-esque direction of mixing different Doom games would work, because each game may have something the other doesn't.

In other news, because of the streams of Hugo Martin playing through Doom Eternal, part 2 of The Ancient Gods is confirmed to have a new weapon and the Crucible will not return.
I wonder if the new weapon could be something enough for Doomguy's potential moveset.

Well, I summarized. They'd have wandered into a traditional Doom-style hell by the time he shows up, and then there'd be a bit of brutal (but relatively bloodless, for rating issues) violence, plus showing off his moveset.

The end sequence would be more of an end credits scene type joke, like the Avengers having Shawarma after the movie. Something silly after all the epic violence is over

The reason I think this would work is twofold... First, Nether, Hell, that's obvious. It's the most literal hell we've got to work with that's already in Smash, and since Minecraft and Doom now have the same parent company, rights shouldn't be an issue. Then Isabelle and Villager as a reference to the Animal Crossing and Doom fandom memes, plus Doomguy protecting an adorable critter as a reference to Daisy.
Most of the Metroid stages have a very hell-ish look to them too. Somewhat of an interesting contrast to Kid Icarus.

Also, I don't think there would be any references to memes (personally, I'm tired of the whole Doom/Animal Crossing meme myself). A reference to Daisy could definitely work, though. References to the series itself could always work. That's why I think it should be more action packed. The "cute" stuff can be shown a few times here and there but the trailer has got to scream Doom. Not just the character but the series itself.

I mainly say that since the mere existence of the flesh and blood in Doom's Hell may scare off Nintendo from having it portrayed in the trailer, to begin with.

Besides, Minecraft's Netherrack is already implied as being organic in nature, to say nothing of stuff like the Soul Sand.

I'm not the person to argue the cynical semantics of content that'd be considered too graphic for Smash. That would be ceterisparibus' job.

All I'm saying that there's more to Doom than Hell stuff, and I'm just pointing out how Nintendo are more liable to skip over this specific portion of the franchise for the more non-Hell stuff (UAC/Earth, Sentinel/Argenta, Maykr, etc, especially given the lack of portrayal of Bayo's Inferno or MC's Nether beyond spirits).

To be fair the falling clock tower is a more memorable part of Bayo then Inferno, and the Nether wasn't going to be picked over a normal MC environment.

But I would agree that if they were to pick a stage for Doom, they would more likely pick UAC themed environment rather then Hell itself.

UAC ain't the only environment Doom has going for it. The Cultist, Mars, Argenta and Maykr aesthetics still stand as appropriate candidates.

Like i said before, the worlds of Doom can be versatile if you consider certain theme or assets.
Like how the original UAC had concrete walls or blue carpet floor.
Earth technically got an upgrade in Eternal but even then, there's Plutonia.
Fusing different themes could also work, when you consider the visual looks of some levels.
Speaking of levels, there's also gameplay stuff to consider: Lifts, crushers, toxic floors, explosive barrels, Doom 64's shooting arrows, even the purple goo...
Also, the latest event in Doom Eternal has a sci-fi alien/X-Files inspired theme.
I actually like the Agent Vile skin even.

If you're craving more Doom 2 then absolutely. If not then i'd say you should probably skip it, cause it gets pretty infuriating imo.
If they're as bad as the Chasm level in Doom 2 was, then yeah, I'll probably avoid playing it

Some levels are just as bad as that level, and others are Thy Flesh Consumed bad. But there's also some really good levels in there, I'd basically describe the whole experience as a mixed-bag. Of course this is just my opinion, i'm sure there are others here who probably feel different about it.

Final Doom's appeal can be limited, but most would say it has its moments.
Some would also say that Plutonia is meant to be challenging and more polished, while TNT is more noticeably rushed (E.G. that one missing yellow key in map 31) but there are parts to enjoy.
Both episodes even have their inspiration on various wads, even if the fan sequels (Plutonia 2, Plutonia Revisited and TNT Revilution unless there's more i'm not aware of) seem more appealing.
I think the weakest official Doom episode is probably Master Levels, even if there's interesting ideas.

I've finally accepted Doom being owned by Microsoft. In the end, Bethesda's IPs do fit well in Microsoft's library of games due to their history on the PC. Plus, I heard that they thought about buying id Software a long time ago after the first Doom game was released.

But fortunately, Doom is still going to be multiplatform, and that's a good thing for me. I never associated the Doom series with any specific consoles, so I find characters like Doom Slayer more acceptable in Smash Bros.

Apparently, Mighty Doom is also available in Canada and someone in a thread played it and gave a pretty long analysis on it https://www.doomworld.com/forum/top...led-mighty-doom/?tab=comments#comment-2255411 and this app was also updated like two days ago, according to the main page.
Besides Microsoft owning Bethesda, there's also news of the founder and CEO, Robert A. Altman, passing away.

According to news from the stream, a new enemy is named the Screecher.
How they work is that killing them makes them automatically perform an "area of effect" ability that buffs nearby enemies.
He's said to be a Hell zombie that otherwise will make things worse if killed.

Not that they're directly related or competing or anything, but I'm feeling pretty bad about Doomguy's chances after Pyra.

So far in FP2 we've seen two Nintendo fighters that probably would've gotten in earlier were it not for timing, and two returning DLC publishers in Square and Microsoft. The seeming planning of it makes me feel like we're gonna see one new company joining Smash at most, and probably not another Westerner at that. I'm leaning towards Sega, Capcom, Platinum, or Koei Tecmo for third parties but maybe even getting another Nintendo.

Either way, not feeling great about characters like Doomguy, Rayman, or Crash getting in right now.

I'm down to seeing whether he gets a Mii costume or not.

Yeah, in general I feel in rather low spirits for anyone in my wishlist even if it's not like the XB pair was direct competition against them. I don't think there's another case of "we wanted to add a character from this game in Ultimate but we had scheduling issues" after Arms and Xenoblade (at least that was explicitly mentioned to the public), and it doesn't seem like there's any particularly big Nintendo game on the horizon to believe we'd get another "promotion" character given the pass is still ending this year, but you never know, I still dread the possibility of a gen 8 pokemon.
I guess all we can do now is see what happens with the mii costumes that drop with fighter 9.
