What is Virtua Fighter?
Virtua Fighter is a series of one-on-one fighting games published by Sega and developed by their AM2 studio. The original game is noteworthy for being a pioneer of the 3D fighting sub-genre. Its success spawned multiple revisions and sequels, a few spin-offs, and an anime series. The most recent Virtua Fighter installment is 2006's Virtua Fighter 5, which had its last update, appropriately subtitled Final Showdown, released for Japanese arcades in 2010 and digitally on home consoles in 2012. Since then, Virtua Fighter characters have only been seen making cameo and crossover appearances including Mii Fighter costumes based on Akira's original polygonal design and fellow Virtua Fighter character Jacky Bryant in Smash 4. Fortunately, Sega has recently stated that they plan on reviving some of their dormant franchises, so a true sixth Virtua Fighter game might be a strong possibility.
Who is Akira?
Akira is the face of Virtua Fighter and a Japanese practitioner of the Chinese martial art Bājíquán. He is a perfect attendee of the World Fighting Tournament as well as the winner of its second iteration, and he has made both friends and enemies with other participants. Outside of the series, Akira has made numerous cameo and crossover appearances including Fighters' Megamix, Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing, Project X Zone, Dead or Alive 5, and the aforementioned Mii costume in Smash 4.
Moveset Potential
Being a fighting game character himself, Akira does already have an established moveset to work with. However, like fellow 3D fighting game star Heihachi Mishima of Tekken fame, it might be difficult to implement his moveset into Smash, which was why the latter was passed up after being considered for Smash 4.
