Welcome to the Official Arle Nadja Support Thread!

(Note: This post is a WIP. It will be periodically updated with new content.)

Arle Nadja (アルル・ナジャ) is a prominent character in the Puyo Puyo and (formally) Madou Monogatari series. She typically serves as the protagonist of the games created by Compile, though in SEGA games she tends to share her role with the characters Amitie and Ringo. Because of her popularity she's often used as a sort of mascot for the series alongside Carbuncle and the Puyos.

She's a young mage apprentice, with a cheery disposition and a love for curry. Though young, she has already shown great skills in diverse magic, common ones including Fire, Ice Storm, Brain Dumbed, Diacute, and Bayoen. She acts rather optimistic most of the time, but she does show a more cynical side on the occasion. She typically acted as the only sane girl, who had to deal with the general zaniness of the rest of the cast. This sometimes causes her to lose her patience, prompting snarky comments or anger.

She's often accompanied by Carbuncle (カーバンクル), a mysterious yellow rabbit-like creature that is known for absolutely loving curry and being Satan's former pet. Despite his innocent looks, he's deceptively strong at playing Puyo Puyo and is capable of firing a piercing laser from the gem on his head, but prefers to simply hang around and goof off. He loves Arle, but even then will still run off on his own on occasion to cause mischief. His gender is technically unknown; Arle uses male pronouns while Satan uses female ones.

Both characters are commonly sought after by Satan (aka Dark Prince), Ruler of The Puyo Underworld. A lot of the plots in the Puyo games is Satan doing something stupid to grab Arle's attention, and Arle begrudgingly going out of the way to stop him. His motivations are to marry Arle and get back Carbuncle, but his methods of doing so are so ridiculous that it only angers Arle and even Carbuncle. This consequentially also attracts other rivals like Schezo and Rulue, who are also after Arle for their own reasons.

As mentioned already, the two are very close to each other, constantly being together in many of the games through thick and thin. This goes as far as a handful of games such as Puyo Puyo Fever 2, Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary, and Puyo Puyo Tetris labeling them both as a single character. In general both characters have appeared in the majority of Puyo Puyo and Madou Monogatari games, along with several DiscStation titles.

Puyo Puyo was a popular series in Japan, primarily in the 90's when the series was in it's golden years with the success of Puyo Puyo and Puyo Puyo Tsu pushing it into the mainstream. Though admittedly had a falling out by the 2000's due to the awkward period for puzzle games in general, but has gained new life again due to the popularity of Puyo Puyo Tetris and Puyo Puyo!! Quest. Regardless, the series is popular enough that SEGA does promote it on a regular basis.

The popularity of the first two arcade games in particular spawned it's own genre of games, competitive focused puzzle games, which would influence companies like Capcom, Konami, SEGA, Tecmo, and Nintendo to create their own spins on the formula. As a few examples, Panel de Pon, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, Taisen Puzzle Dama, Baku Baku Animal, and Panic Bomber. Even older puzzle games like Dr. Mario and Tetris experimented with a similar formula for some games.

I bring this up because I want to clarify that the Puyo Puyo series does has some significance in the grand scheme of things. A long running series that is 25+ years old and managed to gain enough popularity to influence other developers is not something you can boast about for just any series. Within the context of Super Smash Bros. and third parties, it's pretty clear that the franchises aimed that have some sort of legacy attached to them are a priority.

However the achilles' heel, and it's a pretty significant one too, is that the series has failed to gather much of a following outside of Japan (barring France surprisingly). A lot of it's influence is simply lost in a lot of other areas around the world, so to those not following it just seems like a totally random franchise. This has been a problem for decades now, due to a series of questionable business choices effectively tanking the opportunities it had at gaining more popularity on a more global basis. Though on a brighter note, the series has gotten attention recently with Puyo Puyo Tetris being a decent success, so it's very possible the stigma will slowly reverse itself.

On a more subjective note, why should Arle and by extension Carbuncle be chosen? There are quite a number of third parties out there, so naturally picking one is gonna be a tough choice. From a business standpoint, the Puyo Puyo series was designed with a boy and girl demographic in mind. In practice though, it has a habit of attracting a female crowd and even the "esports" crowd. The latter in particular is notable since it's attracted a competitive crowd for decades, predating even Super Smash Bros.

Arle and Carbuncle themselves are a fan favorite in the Puyo Puyo series, frequently getting fan art and being pushed in promotions. So people would be enthusiastic about the characters appearing in a setting like Super Smash Bros. It helps that the Puyo Puyo series recently has been pushing for crossovers, like with Puyo Puyo Tetris and the many collaborations with Puyo Puyo!! Quest.

Here it is, as a spoiler compilation.

Weight: Lucas’ weight base, since Carby isn’t that light.
Walk Speed: R.O.B’s.
Run Speed: Bowser’s.
Air Speed: Lucario’s.
Height: Above Young Link’s. Carby is proportionally small.
Fall Speed: Wario’s. Fast falls just shy of Fox’s.
Traction: Ike’s.
Jump Height: Olimar’s normal, Link’s short, Luigi’s in the air.
Can Wall Jump, but cannot crawl. Carby isn’t hittable, just more hitboxes.

Gimmick (if needed): Arle would have two gimmicks possible which reference her home series. First is the combo mechanic that defines Puyo matches: her first hit is not particularly powerful, but they gradually deal more and more damage, until her finishing blows are very powerful. Second is an All Clear mechanic, which would increase the power of her next spell by 1.5x (any attack with a name) after removing all of her opponents from the stage [they must all be dead at once for this to count]. It is also possible, like Sonic, that she has no gimmick and fights in a straightforward manner.

Jab: Two punches, followed by a headbutt. 2, 2, 4%.
Dash Attack: Swings Carbuncle [henceforth Carby] in front of her. 6%.
Grab: While Arle herself grabs in front of her, Carby sticks his tongue out to grab behind her. Arle has Sonic’s reach, Carby has Yoshi’s. She can grab in the air, which deals 6% damage and could be a tether.
Pummel: Carby bounces on his opponent. 3%, doesn’t chain into itself or count as a combo.

Forward Tilt: Smacks her opponent, backhand. 7%.
Up Tilt: Throws Carby upwards, and he twirls around. 6%, but 9% if you hit the gem.
Down Tilt: A sweeping kick. 5%.

Forward Smash: Thunder: Arle blasts lightning from her hands. 13~22% Electric.
Up Smash: Judgement/Jugem: Sends a ball of light into the air that explodes. 11~20%.
Down Smash: Mind Blast/Brain Dumbed: Sends out psionic waves all around her. 10~19% damage, stuns opponents.

Neutral Air: Spins around a Green Puyo. 5%.
Forward Air: Swings a Red Puyo in front of her. 4% Fire.
Backwards Air: Carby swings a Blue Puyo behind Arle. 4% Water.
Upwards Air: Arle throws a Yellow Puyo above her. 4% Electric.
Downwards Air: Carby throws a Purple Puyo below him. 4% Darkness.

Forward Throw: Punts her opponent. 9%.
Backwards Throw: Carbuncle blasts the opponent with his laser beam. 6% Fire.
Upwards Throw: Carbuncle and Arle chuck four Puyo above them, then their unfortunate target into them, and they pop after. 2% at the throw, 2% per pop. No elements.
Downwards Throw: Throws hot curry on her opponent. 7% Fire.

Neutral Special: Arle Shield & Ice Storm: Outside of a Shield, Arle will use Ice Storm with Carbuncle, which sends giant snowflakes to her opponent. They deal 10% Ice damage, and can freeze. After three uses, it cannot be used for the next six seconds. In her shield, Arle instead uses Arle Shield or “Ruipanko”, which reflects projectiles on contact for 15 seconds but replaces her shield. It has a cooldown of three seconds.
Side Special: Fireball/Fire: Arle shoots 5 fireballs from her right hand one at a time. Carby, meanwhile, shoots 3 behind her in different directions at once. 6% individually.
Up Special: Heaven’s Ray: On the ground, Arle and Carby will shoot a laser beam upwards. While it is stronger than Judgement, Arle leaves herself defenseless on the ground. In the air, Arle rides the beam upward, which has great vertical distance but only okay horizontal distance and leaves her helpless afterwards. 15% grounded, 11% in the air.
Down Special: Diacute “Diamond Cutie”: Increases the power of her next named attack by 3%. Can be used up to three times, and every time she does this, she will stutter the name of that attack. (Fireball, Ice Storm, Mind Blast, Heaven’s Ray, Thunder, Judgement, Bayoeen).
Final Smash: Bayoeen: First, Arle pops a bunch of Puyo, then she and Carby leap upwards and have a massive flower storm. The flowers deal 24% damage, stuns opponents, and flowers them for more damage. The Puyo deal 11% each, and have very high knockback.

Idle 1: Arle pokes her fingers together. Carby imitates her.
Idle 2: Arle makes a “huh?” face as Carby thinks about something.
Up Taunt: Arle points to her opponent and says “Let’s play! (Puyo shobu!)”. Carby dances.
Side Taunt: Arle juggles Carby with two Yellow Mascots (), and he is left dizzy afterwards.
Down Taunt: Arle imitates her victory sprite from Fever 1, and Carby imitates his victory sprite from SUN.

Stage Appearance: Four Puyo of a random color (all of them the same color) fall on the field. When they pop, Arle and Carbuncle show up.
Up Victory: Literally their animation from Tetris. “We did it, Carby! (Yatta ne, Kaa-kun!) Gu gu!”
Side Victory: Carbuncle bounces on a Puyo while Arle imitates her victory pose from 20th Anniversary.
Down Victory: The two wolf down all the curry they can eat.
Defeat: Arle sits on the floor, dazed and hurt. Carbuncle manages to clap just fine, though.

Character Concept: Arle is a puzzle game heroine, with a pet who is capable of some combat and her own set of magical spells. At least 7 of them are important. Her primary game series is about combos, so Arle’s attacks should grow exponentially more powerful the more combos she can get, until her finishing blows are extremely powerful, but her individual attacks are not very powerful. In addition, if all of her opponents are knocked off of the screen, she gets an All Clear. She is built with 1 vs. 1 in mind, and is hard to use in free-for-alls, as her opponents can combo her back. Theme: Combo Magician.

Colors: SEGA Arle and Carby, Amitie & Donguri Gaeru, Ringo & Ecolo, Ally and Ocean Prince, Satan and Carbuncle/Popoi, Compile Arle and Carbuncle
Costumes: Doppelganger Arle and Masked Carbuncle, Dark Arle and Dark Carbuncle
Puzzle games in Smash get the short end of the stick. A clone is the only playable character from a puzzler, no stages and hardly any tertiary content [music, Assists, trophies, etc.] comes from puzzle games. Despite the fact that they’re actually a very significant part of gaming history. Not only that, but the Nintendo Switch has helped Puyo out significantly and this is a big break for the series it has awaited. Arle has a massive history with the Big N: every single one of her major releases is obtainable on a Nintendo console, and she goes as far back as the NES/Famicom era, not to mention her most relevant games being on the Nintendo Switch and 3DS. Arle herself is also notable as being a massive puzzle star in Japan from the 90’s that is still an icon today, to the extent that one could make the serious argument that in Japan, Puyo Puyo is comparable as, if not quite equal or more than, a flagship series to SEGA than even Sonic the Hedgehog, all thanks to Puyo Puyo!! Quest. She’s even ranked fairly high in at least one Smash Ballot poll for the Japanese’s most wanted, and the majority of the characters thus far are western focused. She's one of the biggest remaining choices for a Japanese pick.
Series Symbol: A Green Puyo.

1: Pwurp Island - Much like Skyloft, this would be a tour stage where you visit the various locales. You might spot a Paprisu or two running around! Of course, Puyo would leap around and be a bit of a nuisance. They don’t enter the fray either, just distract you. Stick around and some Puyo regulars will show up: Suketoudara, Sig, Draco Centauros, and more. The Battlefield and Omega versions just float above the entire island.
2: Primp Magic School - This is where many kids go to learn their magic. Not Arle, but she’s been there at least once, and is probably the most notable recurring location in the series. Ms. Accord is out giving her students Sig, Tarutaru, Raffina, Lidelle, and Klug assignments. Amitie isn’t at class, but if she’s not fighting then she is at class. Yu and Rei might come here to haunt for a little bit, only to leave. The alternate versions float above the castle, held aloft by Yu and Rei.
3: Puyo Puyo Circus - Feast your eyes on the greatest festival in all of Puyo history! At least one of these stages could be from Arle’s world, and what better than an actual locale? You would start outside the tent in this stage, but as you fight the background would change. In the first part, you can see Rulue and Satan alongside a jester called Pierrot, but they aren’t there if Arle is her Doppel alt. Inside the tent, Skeleton-T, Archan, and Kikimora can be seen. In the fire portion, there’s Panotty and Draco Centauros. In the water portion, there’s Nohoho, Seriri and Suketoudara. In the sky, Harpy flies about (if Witch isn’t an assist trophy, she’s there too). In the ruins, Dragon finally makes his return to gaming in 18 years, alongside Chico (and non-assist Schezo). Then we go back outside.
4: Tower of Color - At the center of Ally's world entirely is this beautiful thing. It's fought on the outside pedestal with the stars of the five colors. You can see enemies from Puyo Chronicle around like Rammits, and even some of your allies like Ally. It's got Rafisol, too, who might attack or just watch from the highest point of the tower. In the distance, you can see Yellowme and Purplune Towns.
In all of these possible stages, if a stage boss is desired, Ecolo would be my first choice. When Puyo start raining from the sky, that's your cue that Ecolo has come. Ecolo would use "his" spells to attack the stage [Liar, Swindle, Fake Speech, etc.]. Like Ridley before him, he would join the player who defeats him first, though he wouldn't change to his Unusual form any time soon. When he is defeated for the second time, he gives a point to the player who defeated him and doesn't appear until the next match.

Now in that moveset, I don't have something very common: Arle having a dedicated Puyo system. That is more of a defensive thing, whereas I see Arle as an offensive character that references her home series moreso in spirit than in visual effects and literal mechanics.

The answer is pretty obvious, it's none other than Arle. She's got enough history with the Madou Monogatari series and Puyo Puyo up until Sega fully bought the rights since Compile's departure. She would be a great fit with magic and other puzzle tricks up her disposal. If only Puyo Puyo Tetris does well in Western sales, then she wouldn't be so obscure anymore.

Ack, I figured I would've been in the top five of that list since I've played all the Madou Monogatari games by this point XD Ah well, top ten isn't so bad.

Well, somebody's gotta help those people understand the games! Though, clearly a few more people can go on longer rants about them than I can, I manage!

I thought that outfit looked familiar
I've never seen her before, But I'd kill a man to get a magical girl in smash. Smash severely lacks both magic and women and I really think that she'd bring personality that's untouched in smash so far. Also due to being from a vs puzzle game and a magical girl, she'd bring representation from an underrepped game genre and a very popular character trope that so far the only running contender that combines both of these was Lip. She'd also make a very good mirror to Ashley's dark magic if she were to get in as well. I fully support her.

I just love the crossover outfits they do for Project Diva, this one being my favorite.

By the way, do you have any interest in Puyo Puyo or any of the older titles before? I would recommend Tetris on the Switch or PS4 easily if you have little time to try emulating the older games. They can be fun, but get challenging very fast like any puzzle game. Clones like Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine and Kirby's Avalanche are just as good.

To be fair, I DID copy and paste the OP, so this is from quite awhile ago...Also, the OP is still a WIP, so...

I support as well. I've wanted her since the new Puyo Puyo was revealed and I found out who she was.

I'm actually really surprised she's so popular in Japan. I guess I didn't expect that.
Puyo Puyo had been a big franchise for Sega in the Japanese market for a long time. Hence all the crossovers she had with Sonic and Project Diva. The problem is Sega's Western divisions feeling that this type of game wouldn't market well to the West, hence why we got stuff like this.

Not that they are bad games, but it's the same reason why Nintendo was cautious with Panel De Pon all these years until a certain Animal Crossing event. The games have a charming cast of wacky characters and the humor is surprisingly Adventure Time-esque. I'd say most of them never fail to disappoint on challenging gameplay and silly character interactions. Puyo Puyo is definitely a series deserving of more love in the West.

It's one of my favourite Rin outfits too. I wonder how many others are references I never caught on to.
I'm a major fan of Panel de Pon (hence my support of Lip) so I've recently been playing the Animal Crossing version of it. I'm probably gonna pick up Puyo Puyo Tetris for the Switch when I get that too cause I only learned of its existence yesterday when I googled Puyo Puyo and it seems tons of fun.

I wonder how many franchises with a varied cast of women were redone with other recognizable characters because they thought it'll sell better.

Surprisingly, Panel De Pon and Puyo Puyo are the only examples.

A crap ton of anime games got rebranded as generic Americanized IP's in the West at the time. And another famous Sega example, Decap Attack was pretty much a rebranded monster platformer with a mummy tossing skulls from the original adaption of a classic anime.

At least games like Kirby's Avalanche were passable because it made Kirby a ****, which went against his character and still remains hilarious to this day. It was pretty obvious that Sega wanted to capitalize on the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog's popularity with Mean Bean Machine however (even the same robots from the pilot appear as replacements for Satan and Arle's other opponents).

I was honestly expecting a plethora of female-led games that were repackaged as the main characters fell into obscurity. It was a crime not getting these characters from those 2 specific games in the West to begin with though but I see the reasoning. Thank you for telling me where that Kirby screenshot of him standing on Wispy's roots out of what seems to be spite came from, I've been wondering about that for a while.

Are there any movesets for Arle on here? I'd really like to see something that shows me what she's capable of.

There were discussions, but no one ever made a moveset.

I'll probably make one that capitalizes on the Chains in the series for her moveset. But she won't be randomly throwing and stacking Puyos around, there could be some issues with that.

Do you think they'd pull inspiration from the Madou Monogatari series? I watched a playthrough on youtube and Fire, Ice Storm, and Thunder seem like good B moves with Diacute as down B to power them up once a Diacute charge (that is what that spell does right?).

Do you think they'd pull inspiration from the Madou Monogatari series? I watched a playthrough on youtube and Fire, Ice Storm, and Thunder seem like good B moves with Diacute as down B to power them up once a Diacute charge (that is what that spell does right?).
Possibly, she even uses the same spells in the Puyo Puyo series during chain animations. Sure there could be right issues because Compile doesn't work with Sega anymore (hence the creation of a new Madou Monogatari with an original cast), but I don't see that as an issue when Sega allowed the old Puyo Puyo games to be on the Wii and Wii U Virtual Console in Japan.

Yes, Diacute is a buffing spell. It should work the same way.

I think Sega still owns the rights to the characters regardless Isn't that why Compile used original characters in their latest game to begin with?

Madou Monogatari had console and handheld ports done by Sega before. So they still own the characters and the older games ATM.

Well as long as there's no problem with using the spell names and general look they have in-game then I had a few ideas on what the spells could do
B - Fire: shoots a slow fireball forwards and slightly upwards that travels in an arc.
Charged version shoots the fireball at an angle towards the ground, when it hits the ground two small fire pillars appear and slowly move forwards while turning around eachother. If the fireball hits an enemy before it hits the ground then the fireball hits with marginally more knockback than the regular B attack and the pillars don't appear.
Side B - Ice Storm: Creates 3 snowflakes in front before shooting them quickly forward, similarly to Luma's Star Bits only with much more horizontal range. Halts momentum in the air but can only be used once until you land.
Charged version creates 1 giant snowflake in front that travels similarly to Arcthunder with a slight delay and freezes opponents on hit. Both charged and uncharged don't get desroyed by hitting shields.
Up B - Thunder: Arle jumps into the air slightly moving forward surrounded by electrical magic before reaching the apex of the special, raising her finger, then sending a short lightning bolt in whichever direction is held and the direction opposite. Pretty quick and a good OOS option, the startup is like Mewtwo's nair and the bolt is like Robin's Thunder. startup combos into the bolt but it's not a reliable kill move uncharged.
Charged version creates a large shockwave in all directions the same range as the uncharged version that is stronger the closer to her finger the opponent is, making it a reliable kill move at point black range if it's comboed into with the startup.
Down B - Diacute: Laggy powerup move that changes the other B moves into their charged version for a single use. Halts momentum in the air. creates a sort of ring around Arle that shows she's powered up.

So there we go~ thoughts? I based Fire off of the Madou animation, Ice Storm off of the Puyo Puyo animation that pops up, and Thunder off of a move from the Touhou fighting games that I just thought would be neat to add in.

There were discussions, but no one ever made a moveset.
I have a rough draft of one that centers around the replacement of Lucas and another entirely independent. The former is more complete, though, since it's basically giving Lucas tons of variation on his moves that would be more on line with how Arle would use her magic.

@~ Valkyrie ~, I hope you don't mind me posting this here, but I remembered that you made a rundown for a hypothetical Arle Nadja moveset about a year or so ago. I just figured I may as well post it here.

Big fan of Puyo Puyo here and I honestly wouldn't mind her. I also support Lip, but I think since Arle's pretty much popular and prominent today in puzzle game industry, I might even think she would be more suitable choice over time.

I guess she'd be a contestor to Zelda, only using magic in her attacks, and Carbuncle even possibly assisting her in some of them. But that's her shtick.

Anyway, she would use these spells in Smash

  • Fire: Shoots fire at the enemy.
  • Ice Storm: Shoots ice at the enemy.
  • Di-Acuteness (Diacute): Makes your next spell more powerful.
  • Bayoen: Tries to stun the enemy.
  • Heedon: Tries to put the enemy to sleep.
  • Bayohihihi: Gives you a temporary shield. (This would be her shield animation, powered up more by Diacute)
  • Jugem: Sends a magic ball at the enemy — if the spell succeeds, it will contain a very powerful blast that will try to knock the enemy out of the tower. (Possibly a concept for a Final Smash, or an RNG-based ball of magic coming sometimes in her attacks that would deal some knockback)

Anyway, knowing how she functioned in her own games, she could deploy something decently unique in her playstyle: Diacute-stacking.

In Madou Monogatari, the most optimal tactic to win in the games was to stack Diacute-spell about many times as you can, before unleashing an immense barrage of spells on your opponent. Arle thus should have Diacute as her special, strenghening her magic spells to quite powerful levels and use them to take on different types of opponents - Something like Lucas's Offense Up in Project M. But this would render her easier to KO and take damage more harshly, translating to the fact that Arle would always take a turn in Madou Monogatari whenever using Diacute for stacking, rendering her open for attacks.

However, to ensure Diacute isn't spammable, Arle would deploy an unique type of magic meter sort of invisible from the interface. Using Diacute and possibly other spells aside from basic Fire and Ice Storm would train some pints of magic she has. To see this, you got to see what her expression and body language would be like. If she's mostly happy and cheerful, her magic's still fine. If her expressions more neutral, it's got some use left. If she's looking distressed and dizzy, her magic's basically out.

To restore up her magic, she might have to call in Pakista or other merchant from Madou Monogatari-games, I guess? Still working on this.

Diacute could also modify her spells to different forms possibly, maybe strengthening in range and power the more she stacks up. Arle would feel very straightforward obviously due this, but that's how she is.
I support as well. I've wanted her since the new Puyo Puyo was revealed and I found out who she was.

I'm actually really surprised she's so popular in Japan. I guess I didn't expect that.
And you are officially a "Puyo Popper"! Congratulations, Autumn ♫ Autumn ♫ !!

As many have already said, Arle is one of the most prominent video game characters in Japan. Honestly, at this point it's not even an exaggeration to say that. Heck, it's probably safe to say that in this day and age, SEGA considers Arle and Carbuncle together as MORE of a mascot to SEGA of Japan than even SONIC THE HEDGEHOG. Ironically, Puyo Puyo and Sonic have been making a LOT of crossovers in recent years...

Well, if ya want to slide my name up there, feel free to do-

*SMACK*
I'll see about it. As I've said that OP IS still a W.I.P....

Hey guys, I know I'm REALLY late to ask this, but...

And to make things fair, let's add Ringo to this question, shall we?
Arle and Carbunkle are an inseparable duo.

So I'll just give it to her, even if he looks cute with Ringo and Amitie.

Those figures look gorgeous.
It's gotta be Arle, they came from the same series and they're almost always together. You could compare them to Rosalina and Luma.

Honestly, Carbuncle usually does whatever the hell he wants XD Wasn't he Satan's companion at one point?

Also, I came across some sad news the other day. I know I imported PPT, but I just realized that, once the English version comes out, it might default my version of the game to fit my region.

I didn't even think about that until I noticed this Japanese game that I wanted to default to Japanese, instead contained the official English version.

Because Carbuncle is NO ONE'S pet! Not even Arle! Heck, THEY come to HIM, and HE owns THEM!

Why, yes. Yes, he was. You know, it's too bad Carbuncle can't talk because I've always wondered...what IS Carbuncle's opinion on Satan being his pet being Satan's pet? Like, did he LIKE being around Satan, or was he ready to bail at the first opportunity?

After all, at one point in the series, you could play as Carbuncle independently. Now he's just tagged with Arle by default.

Honestly, thinking back now, I can't remember ever seeing Carbuncle look sad. Maybe he's just an insentient cause he's defaultly happy most of the time, isn't he? Or, perhaps, it's just a mask that hides his derelict nature due to all the bad he did with Satan.

Hmm, I can't really imagine Carbuncle having that serious of a back story, but then again, I haven't played all of the Madou Monogatari games yet XD

Oh, man. I'm really sorry about that, bud. I mean, hopefully nothing gets altered?
Yeah, it'll suck if it does. I have played this version enough where I've grown very, very fond of the original voices. Switching them to English is equivalent to watching One Punch Man in dub.

.....I...take it no one realized I was trying to start up a little Puyo inside joke/possible meme among the community. You know, about how Carbuncle is a total BEAST at Puyo Puyo, so no one orders him to do anything?

Well, maybe. I mean, you have a point that Carbuncle's never really shown to have been sad. Surprised or "annoyed" maybe, but not sad. Also, this is the Satan of PUYO PUYO we're talking about here. Maybe it's just me, but if I'm being honest, I can't imagine him going out of his way to do anything outright malicious.

Funny thing, but I think some piece of Madou Monogatari media DOES delve pretty deep into Carbuncle's origins. Still, I'm pretty sure it's no longer/never was considered canon, so...

Well, just remember: We NEED PPT (whether in English or Japanese) to sell REALLY well over here in the West, if we want future Puyo games (and hopefully, media) to be released over here in the future.

Lol, sorry, I was actually taking it seriously XD

In the non-spin-off games, I could, but definitely not in the series' current form, no.

Yeah, any chance of Madou Monogatari being canon is zip now, unless Compile Heart somehow returns to the series someday. Of course, I have fully lost my faith in that ever happening, considering the creator of Puyo Puyo is not even with either company anymore.

Well, just remember: We NEED PPT (whether in English or Japanese) to sell REALLY well over here in the West, if we want future Puyo games to be released over here in the future.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not so against the voices that I want the series to lay dormant in Japan for all eternity, but it will just be sad if they really decide to default me to the English version of the game. It's just funny that, despite importing two Japanese games that play as their localized versions, I never even thought about what would happen to my copy of PPTS once it comes out overseas. It'll just be weird to wake up one day and then be like "oh, I can't wait to play me some- wait, what happened to their voices" and then notice everything is in English XD

Still, should the demand arise for it, they could just as easily throw in an update that does what PPF did and have options for "Language" and "Sound" to be in English or Japanese. Was actually a pretty interesting game when you look back on it now and realize you could play it in its original Japanese translation with English voices.

(and hopefully, media)
I can't see media ever coming here since it would certainly have to be childized. I would certainly feel embarrassed to buy a manga called "Puyo Puyo" that has a bunch of cute anime girls on the front at my age XD

Sadly, it would just have to be really cheesy and instead appeal to the kiddies.

Don't worry. It's OK. Still, I'd like to ask, what do you all think? Should I keep the Carbuncle joke around? I was thinking of making it a recurring joke withon the Puyo fan-base.

Really? Satan never really struck me as the kind that was evil enough to go out of his way to screw with people...well, with the SOLE possible exception of Schezo, at least.

BTW, Notshane Notshane , could you maybe elaborate on what you mean when you say "non-spinoff" games? I only ask because...you know...Puyo Puyo is technically the spin-off series to Madou Monogatari, so...

Yeah, I don't evne see Compile Heart doing anything with MM anytime soon, Puyo Puyo or otherwise. Which is a bit sad, as I'd like to see what they'd do with SEGA's characters (Amitie, Ringo and EVERYONE from their worlds)

You know, the suggestion for PPT to have dual audio HAS been coming up a LOT recently, with most people bringing up Puyo Puyo Fever's audio options. Maybe they COULD patch it into the game or something?

Well, most (in not ALL) Puyo media has been a bit more child-proofed (in a manner of speaking) ever since SEGA took full control over the series in 2001. Not child-proofed enough to where it's unreadable to older audiences, I suppose. Though, that's just my opinion...

Hah, sure. Just as long as Dark Ringo makes an appearance in said jokes every now and again.

Yeah, I meant that game. Should've phrased that better.

I still feel like Compile should've had an even battle regarding the rights to those characters, so it's a little strange that SEGA kept them. But, yeah, by this point, the original lore is relatively stagnant, so I'm fully open to Amitie appearing in it.

You know, the suggestion for PPT to have dual audio HAS been coming up a LOT recently, with most people bringing up Puyo Puyo Fever's audio options. Maybe they COULD patch it into the game or something?
I feel it should be an easy task to do, honestly.

In Japan, it still has some adult humor every now and again. Probably because Japan is not afraid to have that kind of humor in their cartoons, even for kids. They have a limit, of course, but they usually don't even care if they drop swear words, either.

I do have high hopes it's a bit vulgar, though, since a recent E10+ game had some minor vulgarity in it. I feel that would make it hilarious if, every now and then, Arle just blurted out "What the hell?!" cause one of my favorite things about Japanese games is seeing a young character swear.

Only two weeks away until Puyo Puyo Tetris and we already have the demo of the game available to download IN THE WEST. Best Nintendo Direct ever.

Are any of you planning on downloading it tonight?

I'm getting it and I'm pissed that I couldn't play the Splatoon 2 Testfire.

I wonder what characters you can start with in the demo.

Just heard Klug's voice. It's like they took his nerdiest and exaggerated it alot.

He's like an over the top Todd Haberkorn with his voice quips. Now to try the other characters.

So, I've been taking a bit more time to watch some videos over again, and so here's my opinion on the characters:

Arle - Cute and plucky, with a teenage inflection to her voice. I think this'll work after all. Kind of wish there was something to help distinguish her voice from a few others characters, but I'm officially cool with her voice now.

Amitie - Still sort of wish she didn't sound so high-pitched, but once again, I can still bear it.

Ringo - Still sort of needs that slight 'know-it-all' inflection to her voice, but otherwise I'm liking it now. As a matter of fact, I feel like her voice actually sort of compliments Maguro's voice, who I'll get to in a bit.

Carbuncle - Still sounds...unusually similar to his English voice in Fever, but if I'm being honest? I'm actually starting to find it HILARIOUS now that Carbuncle has such an unfittingly deep voice.

Rulue - Still sounds a bit...YOUNGER than I'd expect, and from what I've been heaing, some seem to complain that she seems to have "lost a bit of her sexiness" in English. Otherwise, she sounds pretty all right. I feel like I'll enjoy hearing her in Stroy Mode more. Also, "EXPLODING KNEE!!" Man, I love that! Cue the Captain Falcon Rulue memes.

Suketoudara - Listening to him more, I'm starting to LOVE the voice they gave him. As a matter of fact, his voice actually DOES remind me of King Dedede from the English dub of the Kirby anime without the Southern accent!

Raffine - Again...her voice pretty much fits perfectly overall. It's still close to what I always imagined Raffine would sound like in English.

Sig - As of now, I think I can safely say I'm completely cool with Sig. Again, forgive me for the bias, but it sort of helps me that Sig is (most likely) voiced by Ben Diskin, who I know as Numbah 1 and Numbah 2 from Cartoon Network's Codename: Kids Next Door. Again, personal preference talking...

Klug - Yeeeaaahh....I still don't expect to touch or even play against Klug often. Also, this probably just me, but I think he sounds more like Scrappy Doo than anything else. So you know...still hilarious.

Risukuma - Again, don't have much to say. Similar to Raffine, he sounds almost EXACTLY like what I imagined. Really can't WAIT to hear more of him and his hamminess. Also, I'd like to mention that I'm glad the English version is using a variation of his "I Love You" spell theme. Sadly, this probably means that the "Pedobear" memes won't as be rampant...

Maguro - Maguro sounds...different than what I expected. I still sort of wish Maguro would have been voiced by Roger Craig Smith, a.k.a. the current Sonic the Hedgehog, but it doesn't look to be the case. I just feel like I can see him have that whole "cool, suave, and older teen" voice. All this being said however, I'm actually starting to enjoy the "dorky pre-teen nice guy" voice SEGA went with. As a matter of fact, it sounds like Maguro was voiced by Jason Marsden (Max Goof, for those who need a reference), and honestly, I REALLY hope that's the case.

Tee - I feel like he sounds a little TOO old. Honestly, Tee sounds like what I picture LAGNUS to sound like, if Chronicles ever gets an English dub. That being said, I can live with his voice being this way. I think I'll enjoy him in Story Mode.

O - His cute nature IS emphasized pretty well, so I understand the direction they went with him. Overall, he still sounds like I what I expected.

Ess - Still sounds about what I expected for the most part. Sounds a bit..."typical" for the whole "sweet and sour" archetype now that I hear her again, but it's not a big issue. I imagine her brattiness will really "shine", come Story Mode.

Ai - Still sounds pretty all right. Also, I think that IS a British accent he's using! I still don't know why, but because of that, I'm looking forward to hearing him in Story Mode..

Jay and Elle - Still sound about what I expected. Troublesome twins who talk in unison. Although, I DO enjoy their spell theme and I feel like I'll enjoy them more in Story Mode

Zed - Still sounds about what I expected. BTW, after hearing him over again, his voice makes me think of WAR MACHINE, not Captain America in the first two Marvel vs. Capcom games.

After playing the Switch demo of Puyo Puyo Tetris, I've gotten quite interested in this series! I find puzzle games like these relaxing and challenging at the same time. I think it would be pretty sweet to have Arle in Smash Bros.! Support!
And you are officially an honorary "Puyo Popper", CrossDispatcher CrossDispatcher ! Congratulations!

I'm happy that Arle does not sound as bad as she did in Fever, but I feel Amitie sounds perfect. She's already obnoxiously high-pitched in Japanese, so it is very fitting here in English.
Speaking of which, Notshane Notshane , I was planning on venting my predictions on who's voicing who, so...

Arle - I WANT to say that's Cristina Vee I'm hearing as Arle, but at the same time, I can't help but feel like SEGA got Laura Bailey for her. I wish I knew why I feel that way...Not to say I'd dislike Bailey voicing Arle or anything.

Amitie - Either Christine Marie Cabanos OR Carrie Savage (The latter was also my preferred voice actress for Amitie, BTW)

Ringo - Either Cassandra Lee, Cherami Leigh, or Heather Pennington (They all seem to hold the range Ringo's voice currently uses)

Carbuncle - I'm afraid I can't say for sure in Carby's case. Honestly, I expected SEGA to pull a Pikachu with Carbuncle, and have him reuse his JP voice actress' voice clips.

Rulue - Either Karen Strassman or Lauren Landa

Suketoudara - Ted Lewis (YES, I'M STICKING TO THIS)

Raffine - I want to say...Gina Bowes, but I'm sure I'm WAAAY off here

Sig - Ben Diskin, hands-down.

Klug - I'm going to say...Todd Haberkorn

Risukuma - Travis Willingham, hands-down. (Believe it or not, but he was my preferred English VA for Risukuma!)

Maguro - I feel like it could be Todd Haberkorn or Johnny Yong Bosch, but if I'm being honest? I REALLY want it to be Jason Marsden. This being said, RIP Roger Craig Smith-voiced Maguro.

Tee - Yuri Lownethal. It just has to be.

O - Just like with Carbuncle, I'm not sure. I honestly expected SEGA to pull a Pikachu with him too.

Ess - Hmm....Cindy Robinson (?)

Ai - I....wan to say Ben Diskin, but I could be wrong...

Jay and Elle - Kate Higgins and Colleen Villard (?) Again, could be wrong on this front.

Zed - I'm honestly not sure here. I'd say David Vincent, but I feel like I'd be reaching REAAAALLLY far here.

Our good friend Puyo Nexus was able to share a video with all the alternate voices for the the entire roster. Yes, this is a real review copy that he have in his possession.

Not much to say, but I'm glad the fanbase has a choice over what voices they want for the characters. And no, there will be no dual audio in the game.

I'd say I prefer Arle's alt voice. Any reason they took out Diacute?
Also LOVING the unusual things characters say. Deluxe Spa Package? Fibre? Calculus? Incredible.
