An Introduction to Smashboards Rankings

GoodRankingsNews.png

Hello everyone! It has been quite a while since our last Rankings Update and quite a few things have changed. As such, this article will be an introduction to how our Rankings System works.

The Methodology
Smashboards Rankings is based on the Association of Tennis Professionals Entry Rankings System. Players are ranked by the averages of the total scores of their best performances within a time period. This solves many problems with other systems; especially race systems that give preference to players who attend the most tournament events. This system ensures a more accurate calculation on the relative performances of players. - Tournament Rankings

How does this apply to Smashboards?
Each tournament has a set number of points that can be assigned to a bracket known as categories. These include: Local, Regional, Major, Super Major, and Premier. Categories are assigned depending on the amount of entrants, the events frequency, and the amount of top ranked players that attend an event. Afterwards, player ranks are determined by their best ten results in the previous year. These results are then averaged and a rank is determined for a player. Let us take TSM ZeRo's results as an example.

Date | Event | Players | Rank | Points | Category
2017-Feb-25 | Frostbite 2017 - Wii U Singles | 342 | 1st | 2925 | Super Major
2017-Feb-11 | 2GGC: Midwest Mayhem Saga - Wii U Singles | 331 | 1st | 2925 | Super Major
2017-Jan-14 | 2GGC: Genesis Saga - Wii U Singles | 466 | 1st | 2925 | Super Major
2016-Nov-19 | KTAR XIX - Wii U Singles | 455 | 1st | 2925 | Super Major
2016-Oct-07 | The Big House 6 - Wii U Singles | 777 | 1st | 2925 | Super Major
2017-Jan-20 | Genesis 4 - Wii U Singles | 1012 | 3rd | 2760 | Premier
2016-Jul-16 | EVO 2016 - Wii U Singles | 2662 | 3rd | 2760 | Premier
2017-Mar-18 | MVG Frame Perfect Series 2 - Wii U Singles | 208 | 2nd | 2633 | Super Major
2016-May-28 | GOML 2016 | 489 | 2nd | 2633 | Super Major
2016-Sep-24 | 2GGT: Abadango Saga - Wii U Singles | 544 | 1st | 2400 | Major
Calculating an average between the point values TSM_ZeRo obtained for each event we obtain a score value of 2781. As he holds the highest score value out of all the players in our system, he then obtains the top rank for our Smash for Wii U ladder.

This scoring system is applied through all games that are logged by Smashboards Rankings. These include: Super Smash Bros 64, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Project M, and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

What can we track?
Apart from the data presented on the table above, our system can track various other relevant pieces of information. Let us take the Smash Summit 4 bracket as an example.

As you can see from the results tab we also track character usage data and individual earnings (still a work in progress) for an event. In the case of character data we go even further as we maintain a record for how much usage a character has seen during the previous year. That data can be filtered out by tournament placing and a date range. This date range can also be as short or as large as you desire, assuming there are brackets within said range.

If we return to the Smash Summit 4 results you will notice a Matches Tab that appears next to Results. In this area our system keeps track of players scores between each round. It also highlights the player who ended up taking the set.

Smash.gg Integration
Smash.gg allows you to link your Smashboards profile as a connected account. By enabling this option we are able to automatically import your tournament results once a bracket is uploaded to Smashboards Rankings. This streamlines the process and removes the need for you as a user to manually claim your results for each event.

Future Projects
Our first set of articles will look at how Character usage has been evolving for Melee and Smash 4 since the start of the year. Afterwards, we will be producing a list for Smashboards Rankings Top 50 players for each game. This will take place at the end of the summer cycle of events.

Conclusion
Our goal at Smashboards Rankings is to provide another great resource for player rankings, and tournament data. This also includes being a historical record of events that have been a part of Smash History. I hope you are all looking forward to our future projects.
