Hi Smash Community!

It's probably weird hearing this when Smash Ultimate is on the horizon, but I've been playing sm4sh and looking to pick up a new character. I've been starting to play a bit of Mario (Currently a Luigi main). Just seeking some advice as to what is a good area of focus to start learning to master Mario. I've looked up some combo videos and feel like some are still relevant where as some less relevant. Whether it's even combos to start at or learning how to use specific useful tools that Mario has.

What advice would a more experienced Mario player give to someone hoping to pick him up?

(I'm already pretty experienced at smash, just very minimal experience playing as Mario)
Thanks for any advice!!

First off your best approach option is a grab, to get a grab you can force your opponent to shield by feinting a backoff and then going for a reverse B fireball (which forces them to shield and then nets you a grab) Or you can feint attacking from a fastfall which if you read correctly can make the opponent shield letting you preform a tomahawk grab

Now that you have the opponent grabbed, what do you do?

If your opponent is between 0-20% you can upthrow, fh dair, then jump and follow where your dair sent them, if they're on the left two bairs are guaranteed. If they're on the right a fair is guaranteed which if they don't tech can net you a nair as you land and set up a jab lock if they don't get knocked off the stage.

If your opponent is above 20% you can down throw, up tilt down tilt and up tilt (true most of the time, if your opponent is heavy you can probably get another up tilt in there) then follow with a sh up air up air and when you burned out all your jumps up B. This is true.

Now that we covered what Mario's approach option is lets look at how he edge guards, F.L.O.O.D is amazing at edgeguarding opponents far from the ledge and if you land it on an opponent you can potentially approach them and hit them with cape. Which marks them on the grave unless they read the cape and inverted their direction. Otherwise if F.L.O.O.D isn't charged Bair has good reach and you can RAR into Bair. Mario's Down Tilt can also two frame and has a hitbox that will send the opponent upwards. This can set up for a true RAR Bair or even a Fair at higher percents.

Hope this helps.
