You check the Power Rankings to see if any of your contestants are placed in it. If so, you seed the brackets to keep the ranked players as far from each other as possible. That way, they don't end up facing in the first round and having their placing screwed because of it.

It also means the lower-leveled or non-ranked players usually get picked off early on.

You need to find out who your opponent is and contact them. You can't just assume they'll check this thread every now and then.
