Hey Guys,

Long time, no post. Wow. I honestly forgot I had an account on here, until I tried to sign up again, and it reminded me I already have an account on the e-mail I tried to sign up with. I doubt anyone remembers me, so I will re-introduce myself now.

Hello! My name is Stephanie, and like many of you here, I am a big fan of the Smash Brothers series (and Nintendo games in general). I also love to draw, and have a very anime-esque style because I grew up drawing the characters from my favourite video games off of the back of old skool Nintendo manuals. (Legend of Zelda, Mario Bros., Arkistas Ring) Not Suprisingly, as I got older this led me to eventually start selling drawing comissions and my own independant press comic at anime and gaming conventions. From there I've branched off into directing interactive themed shows for smaller scale cons held in hotels, where it is possible to keep a fairly captive audience, so that we can do things like this to amuse con goers.

Now, What does any of this have to do with Smash Brothers General Discussion? Well, for Realmscon 2007 (In Corpus Christi, TX) I did a Carmen Sandiego Scavanger Hunt/Interactive Show that was a big enough hit with the con goers that the con chair approached me on Sunday that weekend and said "We want you back next year. So, If you know what you are doing for your event next year you can announce it at closing." and I did. I announced the interactive show/event/game/theme for 2008 would be BRAWL.

So, I decided to come ask those who love and know the Smash Brother Series best. (That's you guys) What are the "must have"s if you were to attend an event with a Smash Brothers BRAWL theme? What characters absoloutely MUST appear to make the show good? (Is there a character you are dying to see cosplayed/acted out because you've yet to see a good version of it anywhere?) What Items? What stages? Any Ideas of things to put in the Interactive Game? (EX: I'm thinking of actually finding a way to create a "Break the Targets" mini-game someone cosplaying Star Fox will host so convention goers can play to get bonus points for prizes) No Idea is too crazy. If you can dream it, there is a strong possibility I can find a way to make it happen.

Well, the most obvious would be to have actual Smash Bros Brawl tournaments. I assume this isn't taking place until the summer of '08 so that should give people plenty of time to gear up for a big tournament scene (provided brawl doesn't get delayed again).

Curry over rice. Super spicy (Or not so much, if you want it to be eaten).

Where is this event? I'm totally there if it's near me.

Anyway, I'd love to see a Pokemon Trainer cosplay. That would be hilarious. Snake, Ike and Pit are the other obvious choices that would look good. Zero Suit Samus would be best, though.

Trophy grab. You have the person stand in a spot, and you throw action figures at them, and they throw them into a bowl a few feet in front of them. They keep the ones that they catch and throw into the bowl successfully.

This is pretty awesome, and I must say Welcome back to you. I'm also someone who came back to the boards after being inactive for a long time. *points at his join date*

I would say Geno from super Mario RPG would make a great addition. I'll PM you some info about him. ^_^

As for other character, Sonic and Snake of course. And we can't forget Ridley, and Krystal (from Star Fox Adventures.)

As for items... You could make a big cardboard hammer or something. =p Color it gold and that'd be sweet.

Oh, and have a big open area. Name it final Destination. And have two people fight to the death with no items. =p ^_^

Well.. Yes. The reason I went with that theme is that I noticed that no matter how old Melee gets there are always tournaments going on for it at cons. (Sometimes official, sometimes determined on the spot by the gamers in the game room themself) The series popularity just never dies with con goers. So I figuired, o.k. BRAWLS coming out in December (or so I thought) the con is always in late July or early August, and that will give gamers just enough time to have played the game enough to get really good at it and be itching to show off their skills in a tournament. It also gives me as Show Director of the event enough time, to hang out with gamers I know who are really good at playing through games quickly, to give me a quick run through of everything that happens in story mode of the game, show me all the characters, all their costume variations, and any new items in the game I might want to put in the show.

The delay of the game will only become a bad thing for me, if it gets pushed to come out too close to con time. That doesn't give the average player enough time to practice the game, or save up the money to go out and purchase it. The hard core fans will have the game the day it comes out, no matter when it comes out, but your average joe will probably only get the game after he hears it's out and how awesome it is from the more hard core fan. Sorry, If this is noobish of me to ask, but is there an estimated "new" time of release since the December delay debacle?

I think it's a little pointless IMHO to have "OMG RIDLEY KRYSTAL" there if they don't show up in the game itself. Will this event take before or after the game's release? If after, cosplayed characters should stick to characters in the game. Otherwise, I'd show up in my Biker Scout outfit.

Brawl themed art and comic contests would be jawsome.
Alright! This is what I was hoping for. Some fresh ideas!

I had never thought to incorperate the artists alley into my themed events!

What a great idea! Thank you!

A BRAWL art contest or fan comic (dojinshi? sp?) contest would prob. be a big hit!

I will deff. run this by the con chairs at the next meeting. :bigthumbu

To go along with that, how about Brawl themed improv? Give a volunteer from the audience a roll, and put them in a situation and tell them to act like the character they are given would in that situation.

For example.

You are Snake and you see Peach floating towards you with a Bob-Bomb. What do you do?

And then the person may do something like.

*puts his hand to his head* Colonel... Theres this girl in pink... floating at me. And she's packing some heat..."

It could be fun.

For the love of all things good in the universe... it better be AFTER.

The point of doing the theme was to host a gigantic BRAWL tournament in the gaming room at a time when the game is HOT HOT HOT with the gaming crowd. If the game gets delayed past late July I will be furious! I know Nintendo has a history of delaying things, but it better not be THAT much... and I agree with you on only using characters that are actually in the game. I love Geno, but if he's not in BRAWL then he's not going to be in the interactive show either. As for the Ridley and Kraid rumours...My first thought was when I heard Ridly might appear was, Man I hope they have Ridley, because then I can make a Ridley costume for one of the entertainers to play! Then a few days later I thought, Man, I hope they DON'T have Ridley, because then I'll try to make a Ridley costume, and my chances of finding another stilt-walker auditioner like I did for Janicon, are probably 1 in 1,000,0000.

Sorry, I missed this post. This is awesome. People are posting replies faster then I can read them. You guys are AWESOME. I really appreciate everyone putting there input in, and taking interest in this topic! The actual event is going to be in Corpus Christi, Texas and it's called Realmscon. They haven't announced their official dates yet, but their website is www.realmscon.com and they have a myspace as well. ( http://www.myspace.com/realmscon ) .

I am hoping to hold auditions this time around, like I did for Janicon, so that we can have cosplayers who don't just walk around in the costumes, but also act like the characters throughout the weekend. I will let you guys know when and where the auditions are, if/when the con chairs decide to hold them, so the BRAWL experts can have first dibs at getting to play the characters they know so well. ;)

EDIT: Ahhh! Sorry it is too far for you! ^^; I do hold other themed events in other states, but TX. just happens to be where they were really gung-ho for my idea to do a BRAWL theme. You can go to the websites of any cons you know in your area and request me as a guest to do a themed interactive show in your area, and it might make your chances higher of me being able to do a BRAWL show for your area as well.

EDIT 2: Oh... and Excellent ideas I. Agent!

Keep up the bodacious BRAWL brain storming guys!

A totally random idea from somewhere in my mind: A "Hit the Sandbag" game.
This idea floated through my head as well... but then I thought...

How to make it work? Can people hit REAL sand bags and actually send them flying?

Or will they just explode on impact, and make the con chairs very angry with me?

Either way, it'll probably have to be an outside event. Not an impossibility.

I've seen cosplay dodge ball and tennis events take place.

I've got some experimenting and meditating to do on that one.

As for the The Improv game idea, it sounds like a good one. We'd have to change it up a bit though, because part of what I always promise is innovation, and alot of cons already have things like "Whose line is it anime?" and other improv tv show spin-offs. I'll work on some ideas on how to do it, but "make it fresh"....

... and heavily BRAWL themed. ;)

Don't they have a "prop" game on the Drew Carrey Improv Show?

We could do something like that with BRAWL items instead....

For the "hit the sandbag" thing it could be with multiple sandbags (with the face of course) and could be used as bowling pins, or you could throw a ball them and try to knock them down. It could be a punching bag (several strewn throughout the con) that people could just randomly hit it or something. It could be something totally different like a pinata ( actually that idea seems neat I mean you hit it with a bat in the homerun contest after all) the list goes on and on...

Some other ideas for you:

This one randomly came to me and I think it would be a really neat idea if you pulled it off correctly. Have a "best camera shot" competition where people have a limited amount of time like 3 min. to get a really good snapshot in camera mode. Have a big memory card though. lol you can even have judging criteria such as : Originality ( how off the wall is it?..in good way) / Clarity (is it easy to tell what is going on in the shot?) / Graphics ( does it look cool? lol ) / and also you can have a "memory limit" as to how much memory the snapshot takes up without being over the limit.

Have a like little conference rooms where discussions on BRAWL are held. Stuff like "advanced moves tutorial" / "history of the smash franchise " (meh, maybe this one would be too boring) / "behind the scenes developement" ( if you can get that info that is) / "Secret characters, stages, ect and how to unlock them" / " How to be really good with " insert character name here" ( shows you their best moves, thier combos, little tricks they can do...stuff like that)

You could have a roleplay of Subspace Emmisary with cosplayed characters.... if you would think the story would be good enough, we still don't really know it yet.

If they have it in BRAWL you could have a "Race to the Finish!" where like 2 or more people race on a fun obsticle course (lol, if you have this definently have the cosplayed characters race against each other every now and then)

Hmm... maybe a memory game where you have a lot if not all the items from BRAWL on a table and the person ( or people, you could make this a compitition) looks at it for a set amount of time then they have to turn around ( or something to where they can't see the items on the table anymore. Maybe a curtain?) then the person ( the one that is hosting this event) randomly takes a set amount of items away and hides them under the table. The person (or people) then looks back at the table and has to tell what is missing. ( they have to say the appropriate names of course) Though i wouldn't know if this would be that popular.

Thats all I can think of at the moment, hope this helps. I'll try to think of some more.

With this one, I'd either need to collect an outline of the things BRAWL experts who really analyze and study the game would want to cover and talk about for the person giving the panel/lecture to go over, or someone on here who lives in Texas to voulenteer to host the panel themself. Hosting the panel would get them free admission to the con, since they'd be (technically) working as "staff" for me. So... If we have anyone on the boards who's in Texas who'd like to volunteer to provide this panel, or if we have anyone who is willing to create an outline of all the important topics that need to be covered in a BRAWL "advanced moves tutorial" let me know. I'd much rather have someone from here teaching the panel, because then I know their chances of the person being passionate about the subject they are talking about, and knowing what their talking about, will be much higher.

I really like your "Race to the Finish" idea. I had forgotten about that mini game! I've written that one down on my "Things to discuss with con chairs next conference call" with and marked it with a GREAT BIG yellow highlight star to indicate that I really want to make this one work and see it happen!! I think it would work great if the characters in cosplay hosted the game, and anyone attending the con could sign up and play it to win prizes.

If we're going with the minigames idea, then we can say that really, any of them would work.

For instance, you said a little while back that you would want to incorporate a "Break the Targets" type game. Now I'm assuming that you wouldn't actually break the targets, but you'd just have the touch them, or hit them with a "Projectile".

But if we're going to have something like that, or even Race to the Finish, then why not have Board the Platforms? There's an insane amount of possibilites for that. Any one of the minigames could work, bar none, and a large part of your inspiration seems like it should be coming from there.

Does anyone remember those huge airbounce things we used to go on all the time as kids? Grab one of those, give people some of those 2-feet-wide airbounce boxing gloves, and you've got yourself a Falcon Punch competition. Oh, and you have to do it while Andross spits tiles at you.

As far as Hit the Sandbag goes, you've clearly figured out that hitting an actual sandbag wouldn't work. But that doesn't mean the idea is dead. Take one of those big, white, elementary school dodgeballs, stick some eyes on it, and bam, you've got Sandbag Junior.

Of course, don't forget Link. Get a bow. Get some suction cup arrows. How many other Smash characters can you hit in 30 seconds? You can use moving cardboard cutouts, or, if your budget is small, actual people. Stick some wings onto the guy, and you're Pit.

Get the Smash Ball? Hang a pinata at the end of a treadmill. Hang a pinata high above a trampoline. Randomly toss pinatas into ongoing games. The Smash Ball is a simple idea that's supposed to be a huge part of the game, there's millions of ways it could be incorporated.

Honestly, sitting here, I've got like a trillion ideas running through my head, and I'm sure alot of other people do, too. The problem is that with Brawl not out yet, we have no idea what's going to be big and what's going to be small. Maybe nobody will ever use Smash Balls. Maybe there's going to be a new, better minigame that makes the rest of them seem pathetic. Until it's out, this is going to be hard. Right now, a Board the Platforms or Race to the Finish game seems really cool. When Brawl comes out, it might not.

Maybe if you made more specific requests? After all, "Brawl-related stuff" is a pretty big field. I know that's pretty much exactly what you want, but are there like... sub-categories? Anything that would let people focus their attention is going to benefit you greatly, since right now everyone and everything is kind of all over the place.

Then why are you posting at all?

To give you the benefit of the doubt, the non tl;dr version of this post is...

Willy Wonka says he's gonna hold a convention that is BRAWL themed.

What would you want/expect to see there as one of the 5 golden ticket winners?

Well, there's this one idea I've been kicking around...

Hire 15 toddlers to run at people and try to hit them. The person must beat up as many children as they can.

Naw, just kidding.
Instead, use a fan to blow large balloons with the smash icon on them and streamers hanging off representing arms and legs. The person has to hit them out of a square on the floor as many times as they can before they get KO'd (Every time a balloon hits them they lose 5 points. They start with 50. When they run out, the next hit KOs them.)

hee hee hee! "Kicking around... " *chuckle* Toddlers... hee hee.... *ehm*

Sorry. Back on topic.

Have Sakurai there. And make this annual, so every year the Smash community meets in person. It's a great idea.
Sakurai would be awesome, but probably expensive. Flying him in from Japan alone to the US and then back, would probably cost a pretty penny. That's an awesome idea though, and maybe if this event goes well enough, I'll have enough photos, videos, and good reviews, to put together a proper pitch for a larger scale annual event for BRAWL fans where we could try to get Sakurai and official Nintendo sponsorship involved. Currently, I'm just testing the waters and experimenting with this theme to sort of prove that it's something that can be done and that making a convention interactive is more attractive to attendees. Personally, I think it'll be a huge hit... investors, sponsors, and the guys running the financial aspects of the biz are gonna wanna see proof that there is enough of a market first though, so I'm starting with small scale cons... and we'll see where it goes from there!

Well, If anyone wants to give specific details about an idea they have they are free too, but you're right in assuming I kept it broad for a reason. Anyone can come up with an idea, but it's one thing to do something in theory, another entirely to make it really happen in reality. That's where I will come in. I'll take care of the boring parts. Making sure things get organized and categorized and all that jazz. Right now, I just want everyone to have fun coming up with any and all ideas for what you'd love to see as a SSB fan. You know the first thing that pops in your head that you think "Man, that would be awesome to see happen..." or "I'd love to take part in an event like THIS..." If the idea is one I think would be well recieved by the attendees/audience that's when I'll come in and probably start asking that perosn who came up with the idea for specifics or to further explanation... unless the concept is just obviously cool and anyone with an imagination can see how it would work... like the "Race to the Finish" idea. That idea for a mini-game you don't even have to be a BRAWL fan to understand how much fun it would be to participate in. :)

I really don't understand why people keep saying you need spicy curry as a food. I understand it is a new item and all, but I don't think everyone would like it. Really just stick with normal food, I mean Melee had normal various foods as an item so they will probably keep that for BRAWL. Though I guess if you really wanted to include the curry then make it a compitition to see who can eat the most "spicy curry" without taking a drink of water. ( make it REALLY spicy) It is extremely spicy in the game to where the characters are spitting out fireballs, lol.

Another thing that I thought of which is kind of a given for any con where you can dress-up is a cosplay contest, as in who has the best BRAWL related costume. That can be mentioned on the web site (if you have one) so people can get started on their costumes early.

An idea I thought of that most people I think would really like would be a rather large bulletin board where people can write down their friends code, their age if they want and who they play as the most often in BRAWL. That way other people could write down their codes so they have more people they can play 1 on 1 in BRAWL and have more friends in their friends list and if they want even more people write down their own code as well. Cause I mean not everyone is social enough to ask people they don't know their friends code. This also helps the "pros" to play against characters they need to test against in 1 on 1. Though I don't really know if this would work or not, just a suggestion. ( If you have this make sure to mention it on the website (if you have one) cause not everybody would remember their own friends codes.

Maybe you could have a scavenger hunt with items as the stuff to find ( or anything else that would work) and give each person a map of the con. They have to go and find the items and when they do they mark on their map. Some of the items could be easy to find like center peices: ex. Golden Hammer. Others not so easy like a little stuffed bob-bomb sitting next to a tv in the gaming room....maybe not in the gaming room though it might bother the people if their were too many scavengers looking around in there. To prevent cheating as in people moving the "items" you could glue them in place, lol.

Once the game comes out you could do something where you poke fun at speculation of characters that didn't make it. Like you could have them standing in line, or fighting for the last spot in the game, or something like that, only to be disappointed that they didn't make it.

Now.... THAT.... is a BRILLIANT idea.

I'm going to use that idea for the stage part of the show at Opening or Closing right there. I just finished watching like 3 reality shows in a row where they have the "elimination" round, and I think we're gonna spoof off of one of them, where their like "Alright guys... One of you has immunity.. and the other is... GOING HOME." and then they'll be like "Sonic.... Step Forward... You made it in." and Sonic will start weeping with joy and hugging the other finalists, and then they'll be like "Ridley...Kraid.... Krysta..." One of you... is going home tonight. RIGHT AFTER THIS!! and then we'll do a cheezy commercial break skit like in SNL.

I LOVE IT.

bballstar you win a million creativity points for that post.

O.K. Now I have a question to help me push that idea along, because I really wanna run with it.. but I'm gonna need to know the opinions of those of you keeping up with the rumours. What characters have been "rumoured" or "speculated" to appear the most frequently amongst people in forum communities for Smash fans? I know that Sonic was for the longest time, and nobody believed it until it was confirmed (myself included) but what are some others? And are there any other characters that made it in, that originally many people were saying there was no way they'd actually make it in? Would love to hear some thoughts on that to flesh this sketch out.

Man, there are quite alot of characters being speculated, just look at the boards on here where it says "Brawl Character Discussion" I believe. Some are plain ridiculous though such as mog....I mean, come on!

I guess the MOST rumored would be Ridley ( supposedly somebody has said he is in) and Geno....I really don't know why everyone is so bent on Geno. I guess it has to do with the fact that he was on Sakurai's poll of "characters you want in BRAWL" and got alot of votes. People must just like possesed scarecrows
( I believe thats what he is)

Hopefully my own thread can help you get a better scope of things. Kraid isn't very debated at all, and "Krysta" is actually Krystal, just so you know. One of the Japanese favorites, Stafy, got deconfirmed today.

You know what, I got an idea that you might like! Recreatitng various items into solid art! Not just regular items even! You could just make it like "Recreate any object in the game" type contest! You could score points for :
Originality: So not everyone is remaking the Master Sword
Complexity: A Pokeball scores fewer points than a Galaxia replica
Quality: Simply put, how GOOD it is

Hmmm... That's an interesting idea. I've seen alot of sub-category judging in cosplay contests done for props... but then a person who only likes to contruct items, or likes to recreate (and sometimes make functional) items or objects, always loses out, because I've never seen a contest whre they can submit just THAT. I had a guy at work once tell a story about how he build a replica of the flux capacitor from "Back to the Future" and installed it in his car. The only reward he ever got was security at work mistaking it for a car bomb and making him take it out, and towing the vehicle off the lot because they thought he was being a smart *** when they asked "What the hell is that?!" and he responded with "It's the flux capacitor. It's what makes time travel possible." . It would be nice to have it so those sort of creative minds have an outlet for competition with their creativity the same way costume designers and models do. I like this idea alot. It'll be interesting to see what people will come up with.

PS - Thanks Bball star for the direct link to your thread. Reading it now.

Glad I could help:) Another one: Building little stage-shaped dioramas and minature characters for battle scenes! Maybe you could tape some of the event and put it online? I'd love to see it!

I deff. plan on finding a videoagrapher for the event this year. I've noticed YouTube is the new way for potential future con attendees to judge if the event is worth going to or not. They see what other people taped, if they had a good time, if it looked interesting enough they make plans to go out to the event the next year. Plus, all that hard work and only getting to show it off to the 2,000-3,000 people that will be able to fit in the hotel? pssht. Photos are almost always misleading. If I get video I can prove that innovation and imagination are the keys to success... (Observing Miyamoto's work taught me that!) and then... maybe... eventually... we'll have less and less of the predictable stale same old same old at cons, and more really neat events to look forward to.
