These have got to be the best results post ever. so **** detailed.

I was wondering why I had to play G-reg even though my record was worse than his. It's just because the pools were uneven

I'm glad I did because it was a fun set

I wanna doa sincere question...............

How the organizers managed to sort the battles in each pool? At random or what? &0 participants are a lot,,, and how they programmed each round in a fast way?

They used some kind of program or something? im very interested in this one... if someone can tell ill be very gratefull

1. Organizer. Just me.

2. This is called Swiss Pairs Round Robin. It is, without a doubt, the best way to run a tournament given enough time and setups. Especially with some sort of qualifying elimination tourney on the end. Because played out to the end, it's a single elimination tourney, but everyone else keeps playing.

3. I did everything by hand. Including these results. I just don't trust computers, they always wonk things up. Except some small delays in seeding rounds 3 and 4, I think it went failrly smooth. We started late, and singles didn't get going until 4pm or so. Tourney finished at 10pm or so. Not bad for 58 people.

4. As far as the methodology, the goal is to have everyone play someone with a similar record as them. After the first round, you have split pools (0-1) and (1-0), that play each other (just like in double elim). Then you have 3 pools for round 3. 2-0's play each other, 1-1's play each other, and 0-2's play each other.
Tricks are odd # total entrants, and odd #'s in a pool. Odd # of total entrants is a total bummer, and really ****ing annoying. I solve that by having a "wild card" participant. in this case, it was me. If the #'s were odd, I would join the tourney. If not, I would spare myself the embarrassment.
Odd # in a pool is something that happens quite frequently, and easily solved... you just have one match that crosses pools. For instance, G-Reg playing Fats. Now, I didn't do this... but if you HAVE to choose this match, you want
1.someone who would win anyway playing someone who would lose anyway (throwaway match)
2. Someone weak in the upper bracket vs someone strong in the lower bracket (actual meaningful result).

In case 1, the end result is the same, and the tourney moves on. In case 2, the lower bracket may have a valid complaint, as if he loses barely, he probably could have won against many other different players.

But, what makes Swiss so great, is that losses really don't set you back that far until the very end. Look at Frozen.
Narrowly loses to SmashGod, then draws one of the toughest in the 0-1 pool, Aero. He loses again. Normally, that would eliminate anyone from any double elim tourney, and he'd be way out of the running for top 2 in any pool. But He battled back with some grit and luck, beating Btree, Steve H, and Splode to qualify... only to be eliminated by Korn. But he was still alive and had a shot until like... 9pm.

Anyway. Long story short.

It's swiss pairs.

I did it by hand.

I think it rocked, and would love to do it again.

Not to toot my own horn... but I highly doubt many other tourney organizers can do a swiss pairs by hand like this and not completely screw up somewhere. I'm really stoked that I managed this.

Again, a couple of things I wanted to work on

1. making cross pool matches more fair.
2. Really ironing out the final bracket rules (who gets byes, who plays who, etc)

I liked the single elim process at the end, it put some finality to it, but it really was a matter of who ran into m2k when. Guy is a monster... he didn't lose at all. Double elim after all of those pools seems... excessive.

I'll figure it out.

Thanks alot buddy this is exactly what i wanted to read!!!...

Ok so i figured out more or less how you solved the odd numbers in each pool.... Wewill surely have a max number of entrants to have control over it..... If the max number of entrants is not reached, well the trump card would be used.

I have to agree with you that this is the best method by far to get an optimal stadistical result. Is because of it this mehtos took my attention.

Now, im asking you this, because a pal of mine will organize a big smash event in a month and we are figuring which elimination will be the best.

The problems that i see is...
1-if executed poorly... it can take maybe too much time
2-Could be screwed easily if an error is comited :S

The time is an issue....beecause in the final rounds we want to do double elimination but if this method took you almost all day.....welll i think double elimination is not a possibility :S

My friend told me that there is a chance that the tournie will be held in 2 days....saturday will be th first rounds, an sunday the rest of the tornie...... if it is that way, i think we can make it... if it is one day... i think is not possible.

What ill do now i get home.... is to try to parctice this method now that i understand it better.... and see if it can be done effectively.

another question: how many hours it took you to get all the pool five rounds before the single elimination started?

Congrats,,,,, great great organization u got there!
