Mario was riding Yoshi, and the two were just short of a very long jump. Traveling downwards at terminal velocity into a seemingly bottomless pit, Mario jumped off of Yoshi because he needed extra height on Yoshi's jump. The force of which he hopped off Yoshi was enough to send Mario up enough to make the jump, but it also sent Yoshi downwards at over 200 miles per hour. His body was too fragile and exploded when he hit the bottom spraying blood and viscera everywhere. Pretty brutal way to die, but it's exactly what happens every time Mario jumps off Yoshi.

This is exactly why my favorite thing to do in Smash is to destroy Mario with Yoshi because Mario would sacrifice Yoshi. Serves the traitor right!
