Anyone here is gonna watch the FIFA World Cup ? Are you rooting a team in particular ?
While the political aspects of the organization leave many doubts about the choice of Brazil as host country, when it comes to the game itself, it should be interesting!

Also, some of you may remember that four years ago, I organized a small prediction game among smashers in order to see who was the best at giving the right winner and score for each game. It had a fairly good success, with about 50 Smashers participating, including well known ones like Aniolas (3rd), Cyr (6th) or Armada (19th).

Well, this game is back, so prepare yourself!

The concept is simple : for each game, I will ask you to predict a score. If you find the right winner (or accurately predict a draw), you will earn points. And if you predict the right score you get bonus points !

Also, there are two more ways to get bonus points : first, by guessing the top 3 teams of the event. Getting them in the right order obviously gets you more points. And then, by guessing which team will make it out of each pool. Order doesn’t matter for this one.

How do I play ?
I will use Google forms to gather answers. To play, it’s simple : just fill the the form with your predictions, and voilà !

Obviously, you will need to fill the forms before the games begin. Make sure not to be late, every score received after the game started will not count.

NB : The forms are in both English and French, because as a member of the French Smash community, quite a few players from there are participating.

The forms

I don’t know anything about football ! :(

It doesn’t matter, if can still be fun! Last time, Doraki decided to play, and the definitelyt doesn’t know anything about football. He used a statistic approach, and enter 1-0 for every single game. Including North Korea-Brazil, which was quite hilarious. And statistics got him far, as the managed to get 10th place out of 50 in the final ranking !

I missed the beginning, but I wanted to enter :(
That isn’t a problem, you’ll just play hard mode : all the games you missed will not count, but if your predictions are good, you can still rank well !

Where can I get more information about the squads and the pools ?
Wikepedia is fine.

I call that sport soccer!
Don’t worry, we still like you.

Good luck to everyone !

I'm happy as long as the Germans don't win.

How could you? Never forget the war!

Mort aux Allemnds terribles.
Hahaha

But actually, I like the way they've played for the last years. They really play as a team, instead of focusing on a few individuals' skill.
Also I love Berlin ever since I lived there.

I'm already taking part in a different prediction game. I have Argentina as winner, Brazil as 2nd, France as 3rd and Spain a 4th. Italy, Germany, Belgium and either England or Colombia [don't remember which] are the remaining quarter-finalists.

Definitely my favorite player of the WC. :chuckle:

By the way, joined the prediction game as Rutger (my real life nickname) a few days ago but I forgot there was already a member with that name around the boards. So sorry for any confusion.

Would you go as far as to say that the Swedish aren't even competing in this???
Actually no. Two others Swedes (Aniolas and Hara) are taking part in the game and they are actually legit. But so far, it's true that Armada is on par with his country's football team haha

Also, I guess I'm doing hard mode.
Get 'em'
I you want, you can also add your predictions for the last two games of the first round (Belgium - Algeria and Russia - South Korea), since they haven't started yet.

That Mexican goalie ! That was really impressive !

Anyway, the first day of pools is over, so it's time for a first look on the contest's ranking.

The point system works this way :
Guess the right winner : 1 pt
Guess the right winner, and the right goal difference : 2 pts
Guess the accurate score : 4 pts

Cyr has a decent lead thanks to five accurate guesses and is consistent with his high placing at the last edition.
Behind, Yultan and Aniolas, who were respectively 1st and 3rd in 2010, seem to have some trouble, but that's nothing compared to the bad start of Armada and giggs (the latter being second in 2010).

1. Cyr le Bienheureux 27
2. Meljin 24
3. Dax 23
4. Zyx 20
5. Slhoka 19
5. Scuzz 19
7. Hara 18
8. yultan 17
9. Rutger 16
9. Eiko 16
9. Qlex 16
9. Aniolas 16
13. seya 15
13. Zephyr 15
15. Yomi 14
16. Vincent 13
17. giggs 11
17. Armada 11
19. MissEclipse 9
19. Cpt.Love 9
21. Maxattack 8
22. Isaac 3

For a team that is vastly superior to Mexico, according to Modric, Croatia sure got outplayed. And outscored. :colorful:

Find more details here : https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/10722276/2014WC/2014_WC_predictions-ranking_after_pools.pdf

Cyr keeps a solid lead, but behind him, there's a big battle : 13 players are separated by only 10 points. Yultan and giggs, excellent performers last time are now having difficulties. Also, The brother's battle battle between Armada and Aniolas simply doesn't exist, Armada having by far the lowest score of those who didn't miss matches.

The next form is here, and it is to be filled before saturday ! Make sure to read the instructions, some things change for the bracket.

damn, Shloka, I had forgotten to put Brazil - Chile in time.
I submitted it now, I was going to put 2-1 anyway, so please count it, since it's a mistake anyway.

I literally felt something break inside me when Chile missed that last PK; I'm Mexican.

At least I predicted the winner.
