Of course, this applies to shorthops. So, if the opponent is slow to react, or attacks like Dthrow still gives significant hitstun on higher %s, Checkmate still lives. Still, this is a significant general nerf to faster characters, as much as it is necessary. Let's hope Robin's alleged "buffs" compensate for those shorthop Levin BAirs and UAirs.

The Checkmate calls for a full hop uair most of the time. If our dthrow has similar knockback values and frame data in Ultimate, the combo should still work fine.

Something else to note is that in 1v1 matches there's another (positive) damage multiplier, so damage from SH aerials will basically even out

Dunno if checkmate may still be a thing. they seemed to want to shy away from throws into guaranteed aerials in general.

So in light of new information now that we have access to the full build of Ultimate, Checkmate is indeed RIP, and merely due to down throw changes, as opposed to this new mechanic.
That said, this knockback change (as knocback somewhat directly correlates with damage) can open up some new strings/combos/follow ups, it'll just need to be labbed once the game launches.

Indeed. Robin, whose kit we're familiar with, has changed. It's like our boy/gurl was reborn and will have to retrain ourselves once again.

No Checkmate, no Arcthunder traps, Arcfire traps are considerably weaker too, we have to wait to get the Levin Sword, AND Nasferatu is still complete garbage.

There was no love for our poor beloved tactician.

Actually, and this could just be online only, Arcfire seems to be more way more consistent with getting combos out. Ive been able to combo in nosferatu, Pretty much any aerial, and Thoron. I am in elite smash so im hoping if theres a way to DI out of arcfire my opponents would have by now but it seems that as long as you land the main hit of arcfire on them they're trapped for the duration.
