So we're basing guesses off of sales?
I would unironically pop-off if CJ somehow got in Smash though. Any other GTA character in Smash would be whatever, but CJ would be crazy. Especially if the take some of the wackier weapons or cheat codes into the moveset.
I know there's some "Nintendobois" who somehow don't even know what a "Capcom" is, but it ain't as bad as the Terry situation with people lacking taste.

Played a few DMC games myself, Marvel 3, ect. DMC's a fairly big series, so I'm sure plenty of them have genuinely know of him.

Well someone things highly of themselves. It's me talking to the devs for all their work.
I'm a little disappointed the Claude Skin didn't give him a tan though. Kind of wish they did the same with Daisy, but Mario characters don't get their Retro skins very often anymore.

I played the DMC reboot as my friend had it--was my kind of humor (well, except for the dialogue), but not my kind of game. Also happens to be the most derided version by fans, but it's all that I know about.
I thought he had a good chance to be in Vol 1. I thought the pass would go based on big characters from returning companies, plus 1 or 2 new ones--Thinking Sega returning made me think Joker was highly possible, but I had Sora for the Square character (before learning it was Disney that owned the rights). Dante made sense to me in the same way Joker did--returning company, big game recently came out, on many of the polls I used. And when the creator said Dante wouldn't be in Smash until DMC came to Switch, immediately followed by DMC coming to Switch, I thought it was a much higher possibility.
Did not think he'd be the final character though--I thought it would be either a really huge character (i.e., Sora), or a much more niche character. I leaned on the latter since it made sense to pack the beginning of a Pass with the highly marketable, unpredictable characters to get people the buy the pass. More people would buy a pass with Joker and 4 unknowns, than Byleth and 4 unknowns. But I got hopeful, especially with Sakurai's introduction.
When my friend watched the subbed Japanese version, there wasn't that introduction, and to me that made no sense. I could understand hyping up Byleth for a Japanese audience (though I don't get how it would be so unpredictable it needed to be extra under wraps--they'd be hyped, but no one I think is surprised a FE:TH character eventually made it in), while cutting that intro in the West. I think for a Western audience it would have made much more sense to save it for a Nintendo direct, not mention a Smash character until the Smash character intro, so that hype didn't build up uncontrollably. It's one of many marketing decisions I didn't understand (e.g., the final base game characters), but I guess for a Japanese audience that was the best way they could do it.
However, those are just my impressions. As for the character itself, I don't care either way--as I got my characters, I'm already satisfied, and feel happy for the fans, and bad for those still waiting for theirs. At least 6 more to go, though!

For me, Crash and Heihachi still top the list of both possibilities and likelihoods. Scorpion would too if I thought it was even possible. DoomSlayer and Rayman I think are very likely and they always have been because of how chummy Nintendo has been getting with a Bethesda and Ubisoft. Travis is likely as well. But I’m not sure how likely. And then the last two are vague but distinct possibilities. One is something weird from a company no one is expecting (Borderlands, Portal, League of Legends, something like that). And finally is someone that Sakurai has wanted to do forever like Mach Rider or Chorus Men, or even Ayumi Tachibana with the remake coming.
There’s also the traitor, he is more likely then I’m comfortable with.
