  • I spent so much of my childhood surrounded by internet nostalgia culture that I'm more 80s/90s kid than I am 2000s/2010s kid, and TBH I'm a little glad for it. Anemoia is something I consider to be almost a core of my identity, which sounds a little pathetic when I say it out loud, but thinking about the past while watching or playing something from it just makes me happy.

Creating utterly nonsense scenarios like setting up an all-CPU Smash battle to show a rowdy bunch of 90s console war teenagers what characters of the time will be up to in the future through time travel, or watching Rugrats or Animaniacs and pretending to be a 10 year old raised on He-Man and Thundercats getting his mind blown by seeing quality animation on TV for the first time, it just feels good.

"I sure do love airing new episodes of my popular children's TV series on this holy day of May 1st 2007! What could possibly go wrong?"
If Phoenix Wright got in Smash, it's entirely possible we could get a remix of Jailer's Elegy, A.K.A. the Greeny Phatom theme.

Not very likely as it's not an upbeat song, but Smash has livened up sad songs before and it wouldn't be surprising to hear it quoted in passing.

Honestly I think Knight & Ostrich from Joust would be a better newcomer than Balloon Fighter. If you remove your emotional attachment to a businessman Balloon Fighter doesn't have much to offer and comes from a greatly derivative game.
People who say "misandry doesn't exist" don't understand that misandry is itself a form of misogyny as it places women on a pedestal, as superiors if you will, and experiences with it are likely to subconciously, or even conciously, induce anti-female biases. The same goes with "reverse" racism.

This meme is funny to me because it's supposed to show why Origins' portrayal of Red is better than Ash, when all it really shows is that, if the meme is to be believed, Red is objectively a really poorly written character. I haven't seen Origins so I can't say if this is true or not but it is a REAL bad first impression.

    How?
Dude actually improved after losing to his rival while the other didn't.
One actually put in the effort to catch them all and the other didn't.
One strived and the other is a consistent loser that has things handed to him.
If anything, Ash is the poorly written one from this.
I hate to say people are "no fun" because that's often what people call me, (I play as non-Sans Miis) but people who don't want certain characters they also believe would be fun additions just because "EA/Activision/Disney/Epic/e.t.c. deserves to burn!" are the least fun people imaginable.

Barring a certain tweet, Nickelodeon are actually really good when it comes to representation and I'm glad they made this video - all I'm trying to say is that "a beaver from Blue's Clues had top surgery" is an absurd sentence out of context and the fact it's on a strictly professional site like Snopes makes it pretty funny to me.
I started a thread I'm surprised didn't exist earlier (at least if my searches were correct): one where we discuss and create concepts for new semi-clones!
I saw Dream's leaked face. I'm not trying to shame nor am I endorsing the website or means it was found by, (curiousity killed the cat, y'know) but I can absolutely understand why he hasn't done a face reveal
He's a bit pudgy, which is A-OK, don't get me wrong, but if he did a face reveal he'd likely lose a lot if not all of his "Kpop stan" fanbase given that he isn't really glamourous or handsome.
I get that the 16-bit sound effect wouldn't work well in a modern game, but why of all replacement sounds did Sega use this ear-piercing thing?
EarthBound really wasn't as deep as people give it credit for. Mother 3? Absolutely. EarthBound? No. If anything it's the most light-hearted and shallow of the trilogy. Still a great JRPG I can call myself a fan of, but not the all-time-masterpiece a lot of people say it is when compared to Beginnings and 3.
For my platform fighter project, one character I've been planning is a gross-out tengu who farts and vomits and stuff like that - his current name is "Tengoo" and I'm considering "Tengoop", but originally he was called "Tengew", like tengu + eww - that sounded like a rip roarin' corker of a pun at first, but then I realised it could be read in a way that's very unfortunate for a long-nosed character who uses gas in attacks.
    Some thoughts on series symbols:

I feel Wario has the worst series symbol in Smash. It could've been garlic, Wario's nose, a Wario Bomb, but nope. They chose a W.

Castlevania's symbol feels a little overdetailed, but I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing.

    Banjo's jiggy should've been tilted a little I feel.

A cog for Mega Man was really weird without the knowledge they're a major part of the series in Japan.

Metal Gear's new symbol is really weird - I get why it was changed, but still, I can't help but see it as a Bubsy symbol.

If Wario has the worst symbol, R.O.B. has the second worst. As a kid I remember trying to figure out what it meant. It looks cool, sure, but it's barely recognisable as a Gyro.

Surely the top of a Balance Board would've worked better for Wii Fit?

The Melee G&W series symbol is so much better, like wow. A small change but such a difference.

Surely if F-Zero could have Captain Falcon's falcon as a series symbol, ARMS could've had Spring Man or Min Min's symbol instead of the generic fist? (speaking of which, if Spring Man "isn't the main protagonist", why did Min Min come with his stage? Irrelevant discussion now we have Pyra but still a strange oddity.)

The Wii Sports symbol is so good, but would become pretty outdated should they add a Wii Sports 1 stage.

The Minecraft symbol is really weird in that the outlines are coloured and the inside of them is transparent.

Kirby's symbol would probably work better as Kirby's head than a Warp Star.

The Xenoblade symbol is so awkwardly cut off it's almost comical

The Fire Emblem series symbol is absolutely not helping the series shed it's reputation of "just swords". Not that Sakurai or Nintendo are doing anything to rectify that either.

I'm sure they could've gone with something better for Final Fantasy than the letters "FF"

You could place the DS symbol horizontally and it'd be a perfect Virtual Boy symbol.

For the longest time I thought the ICs' series symbol had closed eyes, turns out it has visible sclera but the pupils merge into the body.
Mark my words, open world games will eventually become so oversaturated that linearity is a selling point, just like how 2D gameplay became a selling point in the late 2000s-through-early 2010s following the 3D boom.
If a Sims rep were to be added to Smash I'd prefer they be a generic everySim rather than an established character like Bella Goth.
The Rick & Morty Fortnite skin is cursed on concept alone, don't get me wrong, but it also may have the best cel shading I've ever seen in a 3D game. If there's to be a Simpsons Hit & Run remake it needs to look something like that.

I'm extremely confident a "Hit & Rerun" would be in good hands as Activision own the rights to the game - Beenox and TfB would both be perfect fits.

You wacky Smash speculators and your logical fallacies!

It's not predatory just because it has characters you don't like. You should've taken more time to consider Sakurai's words about "only buying the pass if you're confident in its value" before you bought the pass. And I say ths as somebody who bought both passes ASAP for the sake of a complete roster.

Sakurai was only taking about his "warning" for 16 seconds. That is only 6 more seconds than the amount of time Sakurai spent talking about the Wii Fit Trainer's eyes and would be extremely easy to drown out with "hype screams", which paired with suspicious wording (specifically the word "value" as opposed to "contents") makes it clear this was a shady tactic. If Nintendo sincerely meant that people should only buy if if they were confident, it would've been plastered all over the marketing materials.

Friend bought the pass for me as a present so none of my money was used and I bought Ultimate used cuz I knew I'd have issues with it.
You know it's gonna be a good movie when you see these logos!

If you know what I'm refrencing, you deserve a veteran's discount. As in a "PTSD-ridden victim of war" veteran.
Snake, owned by Konami = Sony character
Cloud, owned by Square Enix = Sony character
Joker, owned by Sega = Sony character
Crash Bandicoot, owned by Activision = Sony character
Banjo, owned by Microsoft = Nintendo character
Bayonetta, owned by Sega = Nintendo character
Space Invaders, owned by Square Enix = Atari character
Pitfall Harry, owned by Activision = Atari character

How does this logic even work? It's equivalent to calling Steve an Apple rep because Pocket Edition is really popular, or calling Pac-Man a Sony rep because Pac-Man World 1 and the Namco Museum volumes were PS1 exclusives.

I guess I can see people calling Metal Gear and Final Fantasy “Sony franchises…” their most beloved games are generally PlayStation exclusives, and Raiden was even in PASBR (not that that game really represented PlayStation very well in the first place but you get my drift)

At the very least, I consider Banjo a Nintendo character at heart due to his N64 origins.

Crash, on the other hand? While he was definitely a prominent figure in the PS1 days, Sony never had full ownership of him. That was all Universal, legality-wise.
I earnestly believe Goomba not being in Mario Kart is the single worst snub in multiplayer-game-roster-using-existing-characters history - all genres, all series, all tones, all time. This includes snubs that were rectified in later instalments and cut characters from earlier games BTW.

Looking back at this image, which was seen as gospel at the time, makes me seethe. The definitive wording of "they cannot be removed and reintroduced" and "viable contenders list"; the treatment of Master Chief as impossible/irrational but Banjo as fine; the top of the list being worded in such a manner that it sounds factual without actually saying it is; the obvious narriative-pushing in the case of characters like Mona, Fi, Mallo, Fossil Fighter, and Monita, it's all just so manipulative... Smash hype culture has basically died as of late thanks to a lack of leaks and the slight homogeneity of the fighters passes, and frankly I think we're all better off for it, even if it has improved since the days of 3DS/Wii U
I don't get why people doing "add a new character for each franchise!" threads tend to skip or composite the retros. There's enough characters in all the retro series to have a bit of choice if you do enough research - especially Game & Watch.
