  • Call me a bit tinfoil-hatty, but I had a thought. Let's say there was also supposed a "Banjo" to Kazuya's "Hero" this year, and let's say the "Banjo" was Crash (just for an example). There wasn't a "Banjo" this year, so do you think that hypothetical reveal was delayed because of COVID?

I think more than anything Kazuya took a lot of time. Perhaps more than intended. There looks to be a LOT of mechanics for this character beyond just making a LOT of moves for him (His move count is, like his origin series, extensive). They have unique hit animations for both him and those hit by him that also include trips, stagger/crumple and juggle states, etc. There was a reason Heihachi wasn't going to make it into Smash 4. The amount of work Kazuya must take to work is far more than Ryu/Ken or Terry. The last character might not even be beyond initial design phases if Kazuya soaked up all this dev time.

    Okay, that's fair. Like I said, I was a bit tinfoil-hatty.

I personally think that Steve and possibly Sephiroth were meant to be e3 reveals and everyone else was intended for basic directs. I know Steve was announced at Minecon and Sephiroth at the Game Awards but I think that was just convenient timing after rescheduling to account for last year not having an e3.

The e3 characters are the cool ones. The ones that get everyone excited, which works because at e3, there's a better chance of grabbing the attention of people who may not be tuning in for a random Nintendo Direct. Steve and Sephiroth fit that criteria. Kazuya (and Crash as well) could fit that, but Tekken isn't nearly as big as Minecraft, and Sephiroth was clearly meant for a big reveal (which the game awards was still able to pull off).
Out of curiousity, how would you guys feel if our DLC cycle consisted of:
    Bonus Fighter: Bandana Waddle Dee

    Vol. 1:
    1. Sakura Shinguji
    2. :ulthero:
    3. :ultbanjokazooie:
    4. :ultpyra:/Mythra
    5. :ult_terry:
    Vol. 2:
    1. :ultminmin
    2. Crash Bandicoot
    3. :ultsephiroth:
    4. Kazuya
    5. Dr. Eggman
    6. Sora

I'd mostly down for this...personally I do still like having Joker around...but Smash introduced me to Persona so if he wasn't in the game I probably wouldn't have known about him for a while longer (if at all). And I for one love having Steve in the game, so...

I’d be pretty cool with it. However I’d prefer Steve or Joker over some of the characters from already represented series. Not that I hate any of them (I like seph, pyra’s ok, and I’d be down from eggman) but I like seeing new series repped. But I do have bias towards Steve ngl

No Steve? The orange rat? Uh, Sora? Points for keeping Banjo but everything else is a bummer. Oh yeah, Egg would be cool.

    Negative feelings overall though.
I'm kinda sad because this was the E3 where Crash would be perfect...but I'm not gonna hold it against Kazuya he'd probably kill me anyways.. I'm not giving up hope til the end; we only have one slot left.
Here's how to cheese the Death Spirit Battle:
    1. Equip a Shield-type Primary Spirit with 3 open slots
    2. Equip the Sothis Support Spirit
I just realized; the Three Sacred Treasure's weren't Pit's Final Smash until Smash 4. That should've been his Final Smash in Brawl onwards, and Palutena's Army should've been an Assist Trophy in Brawl.

(Also, Dark Pit should've had the Lightning Chariot, just saying)

    Just some common sense here.
I've decided to replay WoL and do a sort of mini-challenge where I play as the next fighter I resuce and stick with them until I rescue another fighter.

I'm Wario at Dracula's Castle, so I go and fight Akuma's Spirit Battle on the way to rescue Ken...and he side-B'd off the stage.

I should've picked Luigi if I knew THAT was gonna happen.

They seem to do it for specific games rather than catch all, DC Superhero Girls had all the Youtube comments disabled too while videos for other games still had comments enabled.

On twitter they just tweeted another Mario Golf trailer with comments enabled as well.

It's not even Nintendo's fault at this point, just the fanbase being a prick.
Unpopular opinion: I don't mind that WoL doesn't have much of a plot besides saving fighters and killing the big bad guy. With all the love poured into it already, along with how different each location and Spirit Battle is, I think it's a better story mode than Subspace for one reason: you actually visit locations based on the series represented in Smash.

    subspace wasn't monotonous at least

I liked WoL well enough but it can never measure up to the scale and story of Subspace. You do visit worlds based on the Smash series in WoL, but it's done with this ugly in-game isometric view. The actual cutscenes just feature the same cliff from Brawl and the map, while very beautiful, doesn't blend at all with the fighters. It doesn't feel like a world, it feels like a world map.

I enjoyed WoL as a game mode but not as a story mode. I don't really have any complaints...as much as I'd love a cool new Subspace-y story mode I certainly don't feel like I need one.
If PopCap wasn't bought out by EA, do you think it'd be easier to get a character from, say, Plants vs. Zombies in Smash?

Nah. We all know the Bookworm would get in first
Sooo...what's your bet for CP10, assuming they're revealed at E3? My hopes are currently placed on Cash Banooca. I'll be pleasantly surprised if CP11 is revealed there as well (especially if it's Sora), but I don't necessarily expect it.
This recent platformer vs. JRPG discourse has been getting on my tats, especially as someone whose most wanted (Crash and Sora) come from both.

I know not of what you speak, but those are two entirely different genres and possibly entirely different cultural/art styles and mechanics. It is silly to try to compare them.

If this is more Smash DLC whining then it is a dumb discussion as whatever is more profitable to push will be what decides things.

Yes, it's more whining from the community.
    Fire-themed tourney this week.

Because apparently the community wasn't already on fire as it is.
Going through WoL with Bane of Light and Bane of Darkness only makes the game pretty easy for the most part, even on Hard mode. I only switch Spirits when a have to worry about a particular hazard during a battle.
These two are a Scrimblo Bimblo and Popular McJRPG Guy I've been supporting since before Ultimate was announced. I don't necessarily EXPECT (but do hope for) either of them at E3 if not both, but if they're there I'd be happy.
Pretty much what Ultimate's AI feels like.

The DS HTTYD game has more annoying AI.

Ah, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo AI. I tried playing through the arcade mode in the collection, but it felt like they were outright cheating by the second or third match. (I've read that the first release was glitched so that every difficulty was treated as the highest difficulty - later releases fixed this, but they used the initial release for the collection)

I don't recall Ultimate's AI being as bad as Smash for Wii U's AI - in that game's classic mode, when I was trying to go for clearing the highest rank for a challenge (beating 9.0 classic without custom moves), I had to avoid any characters with counters (which felt like half of the roster) because if the AI had access to a counter, they would use it with what felt like frame-perfect precision and deal massive amounts of damage. (from what I recall, one use of Corrin's counter attack killed my AI partner in a single hit, or at least did so from 10 or 15% damage)

It always frustrates me when collections only include super street fighter 2 turbo and not any other versions of the game. Like if I had started with super turbo instead of just vanilla sf2, I might not be a fan of the street fighter series, let alone fighting games in general (besides smash)
    Purely hypothetical, but:
I had a random epiphany when thinking about hypothetically, if Sora is revealed as the last DLC character. Again, this is completely hypothetical and I don't think it has anything to do with his chances, I just think that if it DOES end up being the case, it'd be hilarious.

Counting the Aegis sisters as separate characters, and also including Piranha Plant as one of the DLC characters despite not being a part of any of the fighter passes, if Sora is confirmed as the final DLC character, that would make him the 13th overall DLC character in Ultimate. And what version update would he consequently be included in as a result? 13.0.

Again, this is all completely hypothetical and I don't think such thematics affect his chances, but I still think that it's a funny idea.
I guess KH and big-brain moves are never far behind.

Sora is literally the only character where I would believe that a coincidence like this was planned.
