Pretty good theory. I have a tinfoil hat theory that in SMRPG that Smithy wasn't the boss in his dimension and that he was sent by a more powerful evil to take over Mario's dimension. Geno was sent by a Higher Authority to stop Smithy so Smithy being sent by a greater evil doesn't sound too farfetched.
