Well, one reason people hate Pac-Land is because that stage came back while the more iconic Pac-Maze didn't. Though I really don't have anything against the Pac-Land stage. My opinion about it is pretty neutral.

I didn't really like Pac-Maze so I'm not complaining. Plus everyone knows what a Pac-Maze is, so while I'd love to have it in Smash, I'd rather see more obscure Pac-Man games like the World games and the New Adventures get represented.

That's how the original game looks. If it wasn't a sidescroller or have that artstyle, it wouldn't be an accurate recreation of that game, which I'm sure is what they were going for with the stage.
