Folks like Capricorn ruined it for many of us by thinking that selling a fan game is a good idea.

Granted, Rockmen R was pretty average, but still.

The thing is, Sega is the exception. Not the rule. Nintendo is far from the only company to go after fan games. Just look at Square. And besides, most of those fan-games try to make money off of Nintendo's IPs. Which is a no-no. IP Protection is important. Nintendo can't just let anyone do what they want with their properties.
