True, though I played the classics first I grew to like the more story oriented games more but I feel my opinion is drowned out by those who prefer the classic non story oriented games of 1,2 and 3 for nostalgic reasons.

Really? I feel the opposite. Not enough people in places I go to discuss the Classic games in a high enough regard IMO. I find almost all of them (with the exception of CD and a few of the portable games) to be some of the best platforming games ever made gameplay wise.

The classics are fun and challenging I like the advance series. However It often felt unfulfilling because there was no story to it. The lack of a story is what put me off from most Mario games.

Mario never really had one outside of the cartoons and Manga and being unable to empathize with Mario was very off putting for me.

Personally I do enjoy a good story in a game, but that's not really what I play a platformer for - I fully understand that perspective though.

3 and Knuckles had (and still has) one of the best stories in the series.
