  • One game I'm surprised nobody is making an indie spiritual successor to is Pac-Man 2. its strange concept would be much more warmly received nowadays.

It's very oddly specific, in fairness. As in, they'd need to go out of their way to even know of it (which isn't surprising, since the only thing Pac-Man is even remembered for in the general public consciousness is running around in mazes).
If you ever just wake up one day and think "gee, I sure don't feel anxious enough today", look up Kuru Kuru Kururin speedruns.
If I have to see that air pollution ad where the woman screams about nothing and that somehow gets rid of the air pollution one more time...
Sorry to rant, but I need to vent this:

If you think AT promotions should be free or discounted DLC because they're "aLrEaDy In ThE gAmE", you have NO CLUE how game design works. The SSBU DLC characters are ALREADY absurdly cheap for what they're worth, and just because a character already has a model and a couple of animation doesn't mean that it'll be cheap or easy to make:

    a higher poly model
    balancing
    extra animations
    a stage
    coding
    a moveset
    a trailer
extra models for projectiles and cameos
    music remixes

    and COUNTLESS other things.

It’s still special treatment for for something that’s ALREADY IN THE ****ING GAME. All that other stuff I‘m okay with, but it’s still rewarding of shameless paywalling for a character who was given the AT role in the first place.

But fine. Whatever. Happily shell out $6 for a character who was already programmed for an assistant role, only to have their playability locked behind a paywall.
    BonafideFella

Quite frankly, you said it best
They were programmed for a assist role, not a fighter role, I’d imagine it’d take considerably more time and effort and a completely different approach to make them a playable character.
The only things the assist and character would share is the character. Everything would have to be rebuilt.

It is NOT paywalling. Paywalling refers to intrusive MTX, such as those you see in mobile games, a good example would be "The Simpsons: Tapped Out", OK - but let's assume "paywalling" just means paying for someone or something already in the game. Let's say Waluigi got in, if you were paying to be able to control the AT with JUST the kick attack, that'd be what you consider "paywalling", not a fully fleshed out playable Waluigi with a balanced, fully coded and animated moveset that actual work was put into - there's more to a character being in Smash than just "hey look! insert character here is in Smash!"
You know, I think obscure Mario characters have a good future:

    K. Rool in Smash was HUGE. It'll be a moment in Nintendo history which cannot be overstated, that probably lit something or other inside Nintendo's walls, considering that a year or two after K. Rool came aboard, mobile Mario spin-offs started embracing lesser known characters - we saw Baby Wario from Yoshi's Island DS get his PHD, King Bob-Omb; Nabbit; and Dixie Kong took to the tracks, Goomba got its third playable role, even the dolphins got in on the fun.

Now, you could mention the Origami King interviews, but considering how long game development took that probably started development around the time of K. Rool's reveal, before they knew there was a demand for classic characters to come back. Remember that Sakurai said he had no clue fans wanted K. Rool until the ballot.

KirbyWorshipper2465 KirbyWorshipper2465 I think the safest bet for a Mario spin-off character to put in a Mario game, specifically Kart, would be either K. Rool or Ashley. Their popularity is one thing, but it's also that someone unfamiliar with the extended Mario universe can take a quick glance at these characters and tell exactly what they're all about - K. Rool is clearly a greedy yet goofy tyrant, while Ashley is clearly a moody pre-teen witch. You could add them to a Mario Kart game and casual fans wouldn't think much of them. Character design goes a long way for a series like Mario.
    KirbyWorshipper2465

In regards to Ashley, her situation is peculiar; other Nintendo divisions have been so hesitant to use characters made by the WarioWare staff that she showed up in Badge Arcade, the title screen for a tank game, and literally nothing else besides the usual Smash cameos. We really don't know if or when they'll take that first step, especially since we don't know if WW is getting something on Switch.

    K. Rool is increasingly looking like a shoo-in for sure, since DK already has established presence in Mario spin-off stuff.

I get what you're saying, but I don't completely agree. I feel that there is like a split between Mario Games, with some games having the extremely limited cast (2D Mario Games & Paper Mario with Yoshi, Jr., Koopalings, lots of Toads etc), a few getting more leeway (Sports, Kart, Party with Wario, DK, Rosalina etc.)) and then a few characters that would be lucky if they got a trophy/spirit (Paper or M&L originals, characters from DKC/Warioware with the sole exception of Kremlings/K Rool Strikers/Super Sluggers)
Remember when people genuinely believed Poochy and Adeleine would be DLC? I'd happy with either of those 2 but there's no denying that's pretty bottom-of-the-barrel for a series that doesn't even have Waluigi yet.

I was one of them who wanted Poochy as DLC. Good times...^-^

Basically, yeah. Him showing up in a Koizumi-made Mario game is a bit of a big deal.

Even if he isn't playable this time, we're starting to run out of major Mario characters to add as fighters in Smash, so he'd be a logical addition for one of the next choices. Not to mention that recent Yoshi games had him featured in promos and the box art.
    Mamboo07

Agree, Yoshi hasn't gotten a newcomer for years. (Same as Wario.)
People joke about anti-vaxxers/anti-maskers also being anti-seat belt, but funnily enough I've actually met someone IRL who thought he was too good a driver to wear a seat belt.

He was a taxi driver, I don't know if he still is, but I doubt it.
I started maining Mii Brawler for the memes - you know, jump into quickplay and embarrass some kids by beatin' them up with Garfield, Squidward's House, The Noid, or 7 Grand Dad - but I kept maining Mii Brawler for counter throw. Let me tell you, some moves are just made to be countered. DK's F-Smash, Falcon Punch and Mario Fair are some of my favourite counter targets.
I feel the reason a lot of people find Crash games "Dark Souls hard" is because they play them as if they're 2D Mario games. Despite appearing derivative at first sight, Crash games are about precision where Mario games are about exploration. They're the very definition of "linear", which is their strong point IMO. A Crash collectathon makes about as much sense as a Banjo corridor game.
I'd say refusing to use a character for not being "relevant" is more out-of-touch with younger generations than adding a forgotten character.

The internet has been readily accessible to consumers for almost 4 decades now, meticulous fan wikis get tens of thousands of visitors every day and retro games are in fashion with younger generations. Kids know who characters like K. Rool and Geno are, even more so now than when he was first introduced in the case of the latter.

Hell, those who aren't familiar with such characters will still appreciate them - you don't need the full backstory and lore to confidently say "I will play as the fat crocodile king this round".

(I should note I'm refering to any sort of multiplayer game that uses existing characters, not just Smash)
I'm not a Kirby fan so I may be missing out on something, but honestly a generic Waddle Dee sounds way more enticing as a newcomer than Bandanna Waddle Dee - they have bows, axes, balloons, swing ropes, missile launchers, cars, snowballs and parasols - why limit them to just a spear?
    Pokelego999
    Pokelego999
Cause Bandana is a separate character. A main character. He is a sort of leader to the Waddle Dees. Adding a regular Dee would make no sense, as Bandana is a main character. Bandana could also pull those things out of his arsenal too, theres nothing stopping him.
Question: if Goku and SpongeBob ACTUALLY got in Smash, be it as Mii Costumes or proper fighters, would y'all still accept them as additions to the roster? honestly I'd be 100% cool with it, through it obviously won't happen and isn't worth campaigning for in the slightest.

I'm still of the mindset that smash needs to include only characters who's origin's have been from videogames. I know some will try to point out rob or lucario, but both those characters despite not "technically" appearing as game characters first, were designed with a video game in mind. Lucario was another pokemon, who happened to just make his big debut in the cartoon first. ROB was a toy designed purely for the purpose of being used with a video game. (this also means any of those "toys to life" characters like from SKylanders could technically be on the table...)

But more importantly those 2 characters are also first party. And nintendo can do whatever they want with those. But if it's 3rd party, then it really needs to stick to the video game characters only rule, whether for costumes, or actually playable.

But...this is also sakurai and he's shown time and time again that he'll do w/e the hell he wants, so if Spongebob, Shrek, Goku, or any other meme non-video game character got in, there's not much any of us could ever do about it anyway.

    ...

You know what? so long as Geno Gets in I really don't care anymore tbh...
One of the game concepts I'm working on I want to be a 90s cartoon throwback in the same way Cuphead is a 30s throwback - that includes "limiting" the game to 4:3 30FPS on even the most powerful of PCs, and using that as a selling point. I want this to be a "CRT gaming" sort of game.

pretty sure games in the 90s were still 60fps.
No sentence makes me more immersed in a fantasy steampunk world more than "Now available on Steam and PlayStation Store, rated T for Teen."
After years, I finally realised why they call it "Doug's First Movie" despite there being no "Doug's Second Movie" - because Doug was airing on Disney's 1 Saturday Morning at the time, it was a sneaky way of forcing name recognition!
To this day it confuses me that Palutena was revealed at E3 but that same year Pac-Man was revealed behind closed doors. You'd think the more niche character would be the closed doors reveal and the only video game character who rivals Mario in popularity would be their big E3 reveal.
I like how the fish from Balloon Fight being on the Summit stage implies a Black Box shared universe.
A remake of Simpsons: Hit and Run should be called "The Simpsons: Hit & Run: Reran" - the game's got "run" in the title, and it's based on a show with millions of episodes and known for commenting on the media. It's perfect.
I think it's awful to celebrate death, it could be a mass puppy-corpse-rapist and it'd still be a tragedy, that being said...

"Anti-masker dies of COVID-19" just feels satisfyingly karmic. Sometimes I disgust myself.
The "Daisy is a recolour" argument is super weird to me considering Luigi is basically the same - in fact, if anything Daisy has more distinct traits from Peach compared to Luigi to Mario, both design and personality wise.
I'm just "that'd be rad!" about Ashley rather than a die-hard supporter, but I really want to see her and Red get in just because of how much people give her the shaft for dumb reasons - like, have you seen how much people bully Ashley supporters? it's genuinely concerning.

Such is the price of a character getting more noticed by fan support over time: haters get attracted to them like bears to honey.

Now don't get me wrong, I prefer Mona or Jimmy T to get in first, but it's still a shame for Ashley supporters to get heat like this.

I hate it when detractors call us Krystal fans horny furries or us Shantae fans hentai lovers. I swear, female characters especially popular ones have the worst detractors in the community.

I'm more concerned that he has a house that looks like that one property from GTA:Vice City. Why do people like him get to make that kind of money ****posting on Youtube or whatever he does?
As a non-competitive player, I feel SBF and PS2 are distinct enough to share spots on the competitive stagelist (same with Hazards-On and Hazards-Off Smashville), but being a filthy casual I'm not exactly the best voice to listen to.

I'm still pissed that Mushroom Kingdom U is "too big".
But this is the same competitive community that banned Unova because it has a slant on the bottom of the stage that slightly inconveniences Palutena (the most used character at the time).

Seriously? I'd take all the lag in the world over not letting everyone play.

I think that depends on the context. If we're talking about someone that has no other choice, then yeah that sucks, but it also is the unfortunate reality of trying to play in an environment your infrastructure isn't suited for. If we're talking about those people that refuse to spend five bucks on a LAN adapter/cable for their competitive game and then gloat online about it, then I can't say I really feel bad about it :b

But really, every modern competitive game should have connection filters that prevent this from being an issue. I don't mind waiting a little longer for a match if I'm guaranteed a semi-decent connection.
Tried to make a noplat distinct from FD but still competitive, based on the classic GBA game Kuru Kuru Kururin

JonTron's Bubsy video, though funny, becomes really hard to watch when you're a die-hard Bubsy fan and know almost everything there is to know about the series. He gets so much wrong, even for a review intended solely for comedy there's a lot of research failure. (especially since the best jokes in such reviews are usually just the bizarre facts)

I'm still grateful for it memeing Bubsy back to life through.

They're saving that aesthetic for when they port over the final boss stage from Spirits Mode :bigthink:
If they had a Panel De Pon stage, it'd be cool if it shared the Yoshi songlist for Tetris Attack fans like me, so PDP songs can play on Yoshi stages and Yoshi songs can play on the PDP stage.
