  • Hey Fatman, have you played Project X Zone?
    Fatmanonice
    Fatmanonice
I have not. My game playing schedule is weird. Usually I buy like 5-6 at the end of the year and then play through them. Usually I'm too busy throughout most of the year so I try to knock out my back catalog in the winter/spring.
Hey Fatman, have a question. In the Geno thread, you'd made mention that you got word from your contacts that "the final character" was negotiated for, they were a done deal, it was 100% happening, etc. etc. etc. However, to my knowledge you never specified that this was FP11 (aka the end of S2). Were they specifically referring to FP11, or is it more likely to be the bonus character for Road to 100?
    KirbyWorshipper2465

Since Kiki is a non-game character anyway, she wouldn't get in so I guess that's a joke response. Which is just as well, seeing how furious Miyazaki was when Nausicaa was adapted into games.

But yeah, it could be the most Sakurai pick ever when only the guy himself knows who it could be. For all we know it'd be Rooks from Arcana on the SNES, or something.
    Fatmanonice
    Fatmanonice
It is a joke response. Most people assume it will be Balloon Fighter because he developed that game from the ground up himself or Lolo because Iwata was the president of HAL Laboratories before he was the president of Nintendo. Despite that, it could honestly be any game character because I have absolutely no doubt that Sakurai would do everything in his power to secure the rights, no matter how weird or obscure. That said, it's absolutely James Pond and you can't convince me otherwise.

If we're talking real wild picks, I'd be game for Bonk, since we've yet to get anyone from the Hudson side of Konami, plus the PC Engine was a big deal back in the golden age.
so what are the chances that we get steve over Master Chief and what's the word on another Capcom and Namco rep

Microsoft: there's kind of a list of reasons to expect Chief over Steve at this point but I would say that the most basic is that Chief is basically Microsoft's Mario/Mickey Mouse. If Smash wants to go all chips in for a signature "Microsoft" rep, it's going to be him.

Capcom: All signs point to Dante to such an absurd degree that people are kind of psyched out by it. Dante's been prevalent in insider rumors since about May 2019 or so to the point that he's probably the second most heard character overall. It's another Hero situation: either a horribly kept secret or obvious leakbait. Capcom (and the Devil May Cry team for that matter) have a sort of a reputation for being bad at keeping secrets in an almost legendary sense so Dante leaking literally more than a year out by multiple people would shock no one.

Namco: Pretty much between Tales and Tekken. Both teams have been heavily involved in Smash since 2012 with the Tales team practically coming to a standstill thanks to it. People are pretty split on who they'll go with but most insiders seem to side with Tekken. Based on what I know, I side with Tales, particularly Lloyd.
I was wondering what you think of the chances of a Pokemon rep in Wave 2 are? I initially believed they wouldn't go for it, but then we got Byleth lol

Fatmanonice Fatmanonice always wanted to ask this but has been a sort of insider (don't know the full story) changed anything on your view of the industry and any companies for instance?
Thought you'd like a question that isn't really about asking what you about Smash Bros related or such.
    Fatmanonice
    Fatmanonice
Dutch Raikuna Dutch Raikuna Short answer: yes. It's like anything else; once you're in the kitchen, even as a dish washer, it's a different perspective. People talk, people gossip, but it's an industry where saying too much is a liability no matter a person's intentions. This is why I don't leak stuff and typically only talk about things other people have. There's literal value in certain secrets and there's sometimes things people have to keep under wraps for years. It's definitely an adjustment because your inherent thoughts are "oh, it's just video games and just for fun" when the reality is that it's still a business and you have to try to respect that.

Given that, BetaM is lucky that Activision and Beenox just content themselves with letting him be publicity of sorts.

Also, the moment we don't get a second Pokémon in this DLC cycle, the backlash might make the reaction to Byleth look mild...This info about The Pokémon Company is being dismissed like Cassandra.
Do you think crash could be like hayabusa where a ton of people are hearing his name but nothing comes out of it (at least for the time being in hayabusa’s case)
    KirbyWorshipper2465
    KirbyWorshipper2465
Honestly wouldn't be surprised if he's not next. Next character could not necessarily be obvious, but still a noteworthy enough pick to make waves from their inclusion. Bayonetta's shield glitch still bugs me.

If he isn't next, he would have to be saved for E3, guaranteed. Activision is showing up there, June is an important month for Crash-related news, and it's the likeliest place to show the second general Direct of the year with Smash revealing (assuming we get one before then).
    Fatmanonice
    Fatmanonice
6 will more than likely be a curve ball ala Joker. The best way to get people talking is to betray expectations. Characters like Crash and Dante are way too on the nose to the point that even ****in' WAL-MART had Crash as their 6 prediction. Plus, I'm not a huge Crash fan but there's no denying that the dude deserves an E3 or VGA reveal given his legacy.
    L
    Lionfranky
Is Crash vs Tracer like iconic status vs sales? Overwatch has more sales, but Crash seems more iconic.
Markomaro posted this on their Twitter a few days ago and I wanted to talk about it. He seems to be hinting at things he thinks are coming in the next Direct so I figured I'd weigh my opinions on it:

    So..lets see what's on 3DS eShop today

    - Pokemon
    - Minecraft
    - Miitopia
    - Xenoblade 3D
    - Animal Crossing
    - Smash Bros 3DS
    - Mario / Zelda / Luigi's Mansion / Kirby / DK / Sonic
    - Fire Emblem
    - Dragon Quest
    - "RPG"
    - Bravely Default and Second
    - "Metroidvania"

I bring this here because it lines up with a lot of rumors and just wanted to weigh in it based on what I know. Not a big fan of "cryptohints" but a lot of this is probably true regardless.

-Pokemon, Xenoblade 3D, and Animal Crossing are pretty obvious. All spring releases, all formally announced by Nintendo already.

-Minecraft might not actually be Minecraft and just leave it at that.

-Miitopia is actually what motivated me to make this post. In October or so, it was made public that Nintendo nuked a whole bunch of 3DS projects and was going to rework most of them for Switch. Something that didn't really make the rounds however was that Nintendo was also planning on doing ports and remasters of big 3DS games to help with "droughts." Miitopia is one I personally heard back in the fall but the nature of the rumor was weird because Tomodachi Life was mentioned with it too. One? The other? Both? A mash up? Hard to say...

-Smash is Smash. That shouldn't be surprising. I do think we're getting 6 in the next Direct. My prediction is Waluigi despite even my own network wanting me to swan dive into a wood chipper for jumping the shark like this.

-No clue what the list of names is supposed to imply. There's honestly too much it could be. They all have Smash in common but that seems a bit redundant. It's probably just rapid fire of various announcements pertaining to those series whether its DLC, Switch Online games, or flat out new games.

-Markomaro said back in November he heard Fire Emblem 6/7 remake rumors and I have too and I heard them around the same time period so he may be implying this with "Fire Emblem."

-Apparently a European site accidentally recently leaked Dragon Quest Heroes 1 and 2 for Switch so it could be this for "Dragon Quest."

-"RPG" is likely "the Big One ™" and leave it at that.

-Bravely Default is probably just an update on Bravely Default 2. Could be a stand in for another Square game but I doubt it.

-"Metroidvania" is probably the 2D Metroid rumor that's gone viral. Markomaro originally presented this rumor back in November and then a buttload of other people have picked up on it too since then including GameXplain.

Don't know if this is an exhaustive list of everything he thinks is coming in the next Direct but a vast majority of these are realistic expectations based on what I know. I guess we'll see how things play out in the coming weeks.
    Fatmanonice
    Fatmanonice
Yeah, that's what kills me. There's evidence that the General Direct has been delayed not once but twice since January so, despite being a big Animal Crossing fan, the wait for the General Direct is honestly killing me...
    Daeyrat
    Daeyrat
I wonder if they delayed to include more stuff. After this direct, the next one should be in june, after all. They ought to do a strong start now.

I'm perfectly aware this sounds a bit like a stretch (and too smash fanboy-y), but I also wonder if one of these content that they wanted to include was the announcement of a new smash character to compensate for Byleth's reveal's polemic and mixed reactions.

Who knows. Lot of people were told this past week only to be caught with their pants down. Now we have people higher up saying that one was never planned for this week and suggesting that a bunch of people were outright lied to. It's an infuriating situation all the way around.

No. The 5 Indies I've heard are all pretty great picks though. Hollow Knight and Kris accidentally leaked and there's technically three others. One is such a big deal that it would be one of the most shocking reveals in Smash history. Again, these are rumors so whether they're coming or not is definitely up in the air until more details come out.

If true, I bet that either Reimu or Quote is the super-shocking one. The former, especially.
Sorry if you've already been asked this, but I wanted to hear your thoughts on something: You said that one of your contacts predicted a bunch of FE content alongside FP6, along with Hollow Knight and Deltarune mii costumes. What are the odds that we get some kind of Deltarune/Toby Fox announcement during the upcoming direct that coincides with the Deltarune mii costume, assuming it is still coming with FP6?

In regards to that, my current prediction is that FP6 will have Gooigi and Cadence as Mii costumes at the very least. The TH costumes of the House leaders may still happen too but, like I said, one of my guys said Byleth was a Mii costume so they may just stay as ALTs. As for the two indies, I have no idea where they fit into everything. I'm assuming every pack is going to get an indie and, coincidentally, technically 5 aside from Cuphead have been heard but I don't know how they'll go about putting them in. As for the Direct... we'll just see how things play out.
    KirbyWorshipper2465
    KirbyWorshipper2465
Regardless of the theory, Mii costumes for those indies wouldn't surprise me, as many indies only have one game (no established continued series) at the time of this game's negotiations, which isn't quite enough to qualify for playable status. Also, Deltarune is still unfinished anyway, so.
Another crash question, if that future of crash document did leak online, how did it not spread like wildfire like most other leaks of that caliber would?

    Yeah, that's way too suspicious.
    Fatmanonice
    Fatmanonice
From what I understand, Activision accidentally posted it on one of their own sites before taking it down. I imagine that the reason why it hasn't spread is because, kind of like the Seven Squares in August 2018, there's a lot of legal implications. People lost their jobs over the Seven Squares and Square Enix actively went after several insiders who leaked the actual memo. I imagine this is a similar situation. Publicly leaking it would put a massive target on them and, kind of like the Pokemon Company recently showed, anonymity of sites like 4chan and Discord doesn't protect people anymore. If a company genuinely wants to find you, they will.

Given that we're lucky that Beenox are ONLY contenting with trolling BetaM after the first few CTR seasons.

That said, I wonder if the document lines up with the "5-year contract" that I've heard about a while ago.

The people I interact with overwhelmingly focus on Nintendo stuff with sometimes peppering of major Japanese third parties. On that note, hard liscensed stuff like this is typically totally off my radar.
Hey Fatman! I am honestly curious to know EXACTLY where you see Crash popping up in this next pass if at all. You may have mentioned it before, but whenever you have the time to go into as much detail as possible about his inclusion, I'm SO READY to read what you think. Crash is the main character right now anyway that the majority is looking at to be included. Let us know what you think! :)
So with the bombshell of Nintendo rejecting whoever sakurai originally wanted to fighter 5, do you think this is where all the Hayabusa stuff came from and that he could be coming for season 2?

I have my own theory on Ryu. Basically the TLDR version is: insiders heard Nintendo was working with Tecmo for a DLC character, assumed it was Ryu. Tecmo helped develop Three Houses. I think it was a big misunderstanding.
    KirbyWorshipper2465
    KirbyWorshipper2465
Even if that theory ends up proven wrong, one has still got to admit that the way Koei-Tecmo stuff in general has been handled is pretty weird. One AT and spirit from Fatal Frame, yet nothing from the Nintendo Warriors collabs.
At this point how likely is Mandycan bring right about crash bring 6 in your opinion
    Fatmanonice
    Fatmanonice
Depends. If there's absolutely no Smash announcement in the next Direct and none until E3, he's probably right. Crash being announced anywhere outside of E3 makes zero sense to me personally. E3 is where the homeruns happen. Collectively, him, Sonic, and Megaman have been the only third parties that most of the Smash fanbase has agreed with and hasn't been at each other's throats over. Coincidentally, all three were in Nintendo's official Melee poll, 6 years before third parties were even involved, so Crash finally completing that trio at this year's E3 seems like a perfect end.
    D
Since Luigi’s Mansion 3 content is still missing, I think King Boo is a big possibility as this Vol. 2 shill pick. That would also be definitely appropriate as a potential Gooigi costume in a pack. What are you thoughts on King Boo being in over Waluigi instead?

There's a lot I could say here but I'll just say that he really doesn't fit the bill for DLC for this game. Plant was basically a free gift for a lot of people and didn't come with a stage, music, or spirits. King Boo as a fully priced pack with all this content by extension is kind of unbelievable.
Hey Fatman just wondering something. I assume you are predicting the DLC based on whatever info you have and theories and whatnot and was wondering why you don’t seem to think we are getting any smaller characters like Terry or picks on the level of Byleth. Only ones that come to mind for me are Travis and a new Pokemon. It seems like they are some of the front runners for DLc what with them both being relevant characters who could be used to promote their games and dlc respectively. Suda also has continually said that he would try to get Travis in smash and a new Pokemon seems to be an inevitability due to how roster selection usually goes down.

H Herocin Yeah, seriously, Echoes are one thing, but the rest is just reaching, honestly.

So, assuming for the total of 100 fighters to be reached in earnest, there would need to be at least two more passes. Which would be insane, but then again Sakurai has currently not the foggiest clue of what he'll do after the game's completion since he no longer has anyone to guide him, so I guess he might extend its life as much as humanly possible until then.

Honestly, I can see an old-school character show up at the very tail end of development, regardless of how sensical it is. Which is why the complete lack of one at the completion of the base roster completely baffled me, not just the fact that we got a Mario enemy.

Also, the concept of "bonus" character clearly doesn't exist in the context of Smash DLC when it has a clear structure (with PP being a really weird outlier because they barely missed the base roster). We're no longer in the days of Smash 4, so I wish that term would stop getting used.
    Fatmanonice
    Fatmanonice
Is it really that much of a stretch though? They make it a point to show Alph and the Koopalings in the game intro. Sakurai also made it a point to go into each of Hero's, uh, heroes both in the introduction trailer and Hero's presentation. Either way, this is probably the last season so it's irrelevant if people count the ALTs or not.
    H
    Herocin
But still alts. That’s the main thing here. Like I said canonically they are different but in smash the game in question they are alts. They have no differences and it’s just a funny little coincidence that we will end on 99 if anything. Too much of a stretch.
So whatever happened with that big announcement you were talking about around the time of the indie direct/VGA's in December, the one Papagenos was also supposedly told. Is that still up in the air on whether or not it's actually happenning?
Do you think its possible that they'll try to go for 100 playable characters? I think about it myself and I can't fill in a whole roster to get to 100 so I wonder how they would even go about that
    Fatmanonice
    Fatmanonice
Maybe. Part of my theories stem from this and how the character process is usually about a year long. First the decision, then negotiation, then planning, then development. One of my guys says that the development part typically takes about 7-8 months so Crash being decided at E3 2019 and then released this coming E3 would definitely fit this model. My theory is that Crash is going to show up at AN E3, whether it's 2020 or 2021. He's that big of a deal but I can't decide which.
Hey, apologies if you've already addressed this in the past but I was wondering what your opinion was regarding Geno being DLC despite the fact SMRPG wasn't released in Europe until 2015 and on the Wii U which as we know wasn't very popular anyway.

I know the same could be said for Earthbound but if Geno was paid DLC wouldn't he sell abysmally in those regions? Curious to your perspective on it and if you think it may affect his chances
    Fatmanonice
    Fatmanonice
SMRPG was included in the European version of the SNES Classic in 2017 too. That said, I think it's a non issue.
    Kevinhend
    Kevinhend
It's actually been available far longer than that even. It has been available since the Wii days (August 2008 to be exact) where it was brought overseas for the first time as part of the Hanabi Festival (an event which introduced non-PAL released games to the region through the Virtual Console). Which was my first exposure to Super Mario RPG itself. So even in Europe it's been available well over a decade now.
And even ignoring that, thanks to the internet the gap between the US and Europe isn't really that big. In fact I knew about Geno well before the game even released.
    Odi132
    Odi132
That's really cool, I had no idea it was on the Wii virtual console. I had to import the Japanese version for the Super Famicom back in the day to play it. This honestly makes me feel more confident in Geno's chances
What do you think of Rayman's chances at this point, as the Ubisoft costume can either be seen as a good or bad thing for his chances depending how you look at them
    Fatmanonice
    Fatmanonice
To be frank, not great. We've never had a major company have content before a character if they get a playable character so Ubisoft getting not only spirits but Mii costumes isn't exactly a great sign. Could still thread the needle but I personally doubt it.
Remember when you and Nazyrus claimed the NOA source heard Sol Badguys name all the way back in July?

Now that ASW is officially on board with Ultimate, what do you think about that now?
    Fatmanonice
    Fatmanonice
Probably a Mii costume, unfortunately. Two of my guys are really confident in Guilty Gear content coming. One thinks it's a sign of playable Sol and he's had this idea since November or so. The other guy thinks it's another Resident Evil situation and not getting his hopes up. Guilty Gear coming to Switch in November makes me think they're going to pay tribute to the series somehow but I'm now strongly doubting a character.
    nessdeltarune00
    nessdeltarune00
That is your opinion, but its still really suspicious to me.

The NOA guy supposedly heard his name last summer, which was months before the pass was finalized. And now a ASW Spirit event happens, with their cash cows (Guilty Gear, Blazblue, ect) completely MIA?

Again, that is your opinion, but to me, that event is nothing but good news for Sol or Ragna.
Do you think Crash and Hayabusa could potentially just end up being Mii costumes?
    Fatmanonice
    Fatmanonice
Crash? No. Hayabusa? Maybe. The lack of Tecmo content is very strange especially with Tecmo developing Three Houses and the various Warriors games. Fatal Frame was developed by Tecmo but published by Nintendo so that explains why it's there. At this point, I feel he's either a costume or simply not in the game at all.
    castinets98
    castinets98
i guess if you think the third party spirit events have no bearing on FP2 characters, there could also be a Ninja Gaiden spirit event.
Kind of wanted to comment on a common rumor that I've seen on here and Discord about 6 being "Dante or Dante like character" and one description even describing it as a "Joker echo." For starters, Dante is pretty damn distinct. White hair. Red coat. Shirtless. Fights with a broad sword and guns. It would be virtually impossible to mistake him for anyone else.

This is why my theory is that this is someone in early development. Dante is too unique to be mixed up with anyone else. If it really is Dante, it's the super early stages of the character. Either way, there's no way they're 6. If Dante was next, he's one of those characters that you could recognize from across the room. Way too many distinct design choices to have him mistaken for anyone else, especially if these rumors are supposedly coming from playtesters.

Back in 2018, we had 4Chan leaks of Plant in August. This means Plant was roughly 6 months from release and STILL done enough to be recognized. Even if Dante was an E3 reveal and still couldn't be recognized on sight, that's not a good sign. The sheer ambiguity of this mystery makes me believe, no matter who they are, they are nowhere close to completion and more than likely not 6.
    D
Do you think Geno may get announced alongside SMRPG SNES online?
    Fatmanonice

I just know I was told on Christmas from one of my contacts that a SNES dump was coming "soon" and that supposedly several of the games would be attached to future announcements. I suppose Geno could definitely fall into that. Markomaro's DK Switch rumor definitely could too. My personal thought right now is that Geno's is 7 and E3 at the absolute earliest.

Guess I'll post rumors and such here from now on. Nothing too big today. During my temp ban one of my contacts simply passed along that the Smash Amiibo releases will probably be wonky from now on. Unsurprisingly the Tales logos were just used for the 25th anniversary and are not meant for Smash:

Well i doubt that raises any chance for him. They just have a logo now. Like every other series too. If a logo raises the chance, then they now elevated their chances from a negative value (due to not having a logo) to the value all other series have too :D

Sorry, just now seeing this. Post pass, pretty decent and my current theory is that most of "Season 2" will be double dips.
