  • I don’t know why I even signed up for this online tournament tomorrow I’m just gonna go 0-2 because im trash
Man, Ultimate just isn’t fun to me anymore. Too many bs characters

But I feel like I’m forced to play this awful game because of my friends at school since they all play it and it’s the main game at my schools video game club

    Ugh...

Rants like these are little/no different than someone like Gamerzard
At this point there’s only so much people can do to try and help you, don’t like this game competitively don’t play it
“But Snake has frame 1 grenades!”
“Kirby is still an awful character!”
“I’ve been trying so hard and I’m not improving, i’m So tired”
“Ugh, i’ve Been gimped at 30% and i’m Dropping Roy!”
That’s life. It won’t magically do things you want. Get used to the game or play something like tennis.
Ultimate puts me in so much genuine distress

How the hell did I get hit by 5 palu nairs across the entirety of FD as Wolf. I couldn’t air dodge out of any of them because online input lag.

Why did Nintendo indirectly buff that move

Tbh the nerf only weakened her like what, 3%?

Nair will probably be reworked in the next game...but until then you just gotta stick with it.

There's a second type of buffer in this game where you just hold down the button you want to buffer so lag doesn't eat your input. I need to remember to use it sometimes myself.
Jesuischoq doing well at a C-tier and beating Gluttony gave me some motivation and faith ngl

And not just any C-tier, but with Europe’s greatest threats in the realm.
Choq has defeated a lot of them. Leon, Oryon, VinS, Glutonny....considered “-2” matchups.
    Solo Kirby.

I too feel salty at losses but...isn't losing technically a part of learning the game and experiencing it? Players I know tank as much losses as they can, but they do so to improve on what they lack.

I admit that I lose sometimes in all the games I play, but...seriously if you are just having that defeatist attitude in your mind, then I don't know how to help you anymore. I'm clearly not even a professional but I do know how competitive mindset works.

When I first came to competitve Smash, my aim isn't just to win, but to enjoy. Have fun.
    K
    K=RB2
Kirby is a matter of patience. As with Mario, Snake, Shulk, or any character for the matter, they all play to win.

Rather, they ask you how you’re going to play the game. Bad matchup, you’re getting camped/outranged! Or how about:
X wants to use his (insert tools here) to try and make me sit in shield, but I’ll try and utilize crouch and stuff him out with my tilts.”

It’s your choice on how you take actions. The “play not to lose” mindset means you already lost.

On a side note, The Kirby Discord is here to help players like me and you grow. Don’t be afraid to be one of the members there. Kels is there. Jesuischoq is there. Ice killer is there. Tim is there. I’m sure they’ll all be happy to help you improve.
Ultimate sucks as a competitive game.

So many degenerate ass characters whether their good or not it’s ****ing ridiculous. Snake, Pika, Joker, Terry, Shotos, Mario, Luigi, R.O.B, Zero Suit Samus and more can get away with so much bull**** it’s flat out unfair. Frame 3 or faster options that idiots can just mash and win and I can’t do **** about it, crazy safety on shield, and ppl can take advantage of this **** online. But god forbid Little Mac have side b back after getting hit, Bayo’s moves working, shields being fixed, DK’s moves being safe, or Kirby being a functional character in general.

I have almost no motivation to play this game competitively anymore. I’ve hardly improved, my only way of practice is WiFi and it’s terrible and the most common characters online are extremely unfun and mentally draining to fight, and Kirby’s still an awful character. 7.0 needs to make a complete overhaul of changes buffs and nets just as big if not bigger than 3.1.0 for me to get my motivation back, including Kirby buffs. I don’t even care if he’s top tier just help the ****ing character Jesus Christ. Please.

    I’m tired

I understand that because I too have school and stuff, but you can always use a break.

You identified having a bad attitude, fantastic. Best thing I’d suggest is your parents, they’re here to try and help you go through your problems.
You have friends at school, talk to them. Counselors are also free to talk as well.
Ice_killer and other Kirby players are doing very well on discord even without offline. They have all the frame data and everything to lab out. Please join the Kirby Ultimate discord, they helped me so much improve my game play.
I see you’ve participated on one wifi tournament at smashdata, talk with your parents about going to an offline tournament at a long weekend (president’s day). If not then arrange on on spring break.
I went 1-2 at a stacked local and I’m very happy about going solo Kirby without a switch.

As you are a senior, talk with the school if you can organize a challonge smash tournament. It’s lots of fun to organize tournaments like these.
Tier lists don’t pass judgement on my brain. Buff wishlists don’t pass judgement on my mind. We all chose different ways to play Smash Ultimate. Mine was more fun.

If all you do is complain, you will never be a good player.

    Oz o:
@MarioRayFalcon It hasn't really been that bad for high/top tier characters. Wolf and Lucina got very minimal nerfs, and the only instance I recall is Pichu (who's still, easily, a good character). If anything, it's just "bad" characters that have been getting buffs, so most people get what they want.

Unless you main Zelda. points to self
    Oz o:
    Oz o:
I complain all the time, but I feel like it's necessary to move forward... to an extent. It's called basic expression. You need it, in the moment. You can only do so much at a given time, and just expressing your frustration helps you move forward in the present.

Not all complaining is bad. It's a problem when you're using it as a sort of excuse, and you might not be recognizing the real problem because of it. points to self again
Kirby seriously needs a frame 3 or faster move that isn’t jab. It’s honestly ridiculous that his fastest option is in contention for his worst move

Hey, at least jab works as an out-of-parry option. I play ZSS and it works all the time...or I could be wrong haha.

But seriously if all you do is complain about why your main doesn't work instead of trying to think of exploits, why not just work with what you have? The character's getting buffed anyway, and besides, the problem I see with Ultimate's balancing is that there is a huge gap between top tiers and low tiers. Some characters are godlike and there's a big difference between an average character and a low tier.

Why not follow someone like Supergirlkels who plays a good Kirby and learn her techniques?

or be like me and search up vods on people playing Kirby in competitive play
Or try to run a smash local at your school
    Oz o:
    Oz o:
Tons of characters don't have moves under Frame 4 that isn't a Jab and they get by fine. Joker is apparently Sheik to a lot of people, but his frame data is actually pretty average.
I don’t think I’ve been in a consistently good mood since the end of August

Trying to be competitive while constantly maining a low tier will quite often make you unhappy.
Haven’t you tried avoiding the CCI thread?
    D
Honestly, instead of whining **** about your main, try to adjust to the current meta.

Complaining about bs you don't like isn't going to solve your problem. I'm just recently becoming a dedicated Marth/Lucina main but Sheik has been a character I liked a lot. And when I knew she was low tier in Ultimate? I stuck with her in friendly matches. I didn't complain or anything, but to me, this behavior is getting pretty toxic.

You're reminding me of LowTierGod. No seriously.

I keep saying, if you want to get better, Quickplay is never the answer. Characters Discord’s, on the other hand, you meet likeminded people with roughly the same goals. Quickplay is for when it’s 4 am and you have nothin better to do with your life (aka literally me).

Have you been going to locals? Do your best at trying to get there. It’s far better to lose when it’s your complete responsibility and no other factor, like lag.

Competitive smash is not for the stressed life. loads of homework/tests/exams while also dealing with issues outside school, as well as navigating social stuff. Use Smash as the cure to your stress, not as the “forced alleviation”.
You have locals at your school? Great! Try communicating with people interested. Expect to be 0-2’ed, never set any expectations. Expectations forsee disappointment, letting the crummy mindset flow through you.
If you know who hadn’t retired I feel like Snake would still be considered top 5.

He still needs to be gutted. The only character I can see being realistically better than him is Joker.

    Oz o:
    Oz o:
Snake has surprisingly dumb frame data for a character of his kind (a heavyweight zoner). His average move is like Frame 5-6, and there's absolutely no reason he should have a Frame 3 Dair (that's a Frame 6 OoS, same as Yoshi & Mario Nairs). Couple all this with two Frame 1 grenades that explode on contact.

This isn't even a complaint as much as an observation.
Frame 3 sex kicks should be deleted from the game.

I’m not joking. Who thought that it was a good idea to give that **** to Mario and Yoshi who have great air speed and Mario has combos and Luigi, who has a 0 to death?
Why don’t more people complain about Mario

    He’s definitely top 10.

    And better than Pikachu

    Mario is actually good though.
I'd join a character cord but i've been going back and forth between mains since the game's birth and i still am.

atm I'm considering learning Joker since he's the best in the game(No its NOT pikachu stfu) but he's one of the more difficult characters and he lowkey needs nerfs

...but if i can't beat him, i might as well main him, right?
    Oz o:
    Oz o:
I feel Pikachu is ultimately better when you're perfect, and not even like Sheik-level perfect. He's the character with the least weaknesses, and that's what basically what seems to be the name of the game, for Ultimate. Joker still has weaknesses, like somewhat of an exploitable recovery (which people aren't fully catching on to), and it's not like he has Sheik frame data (as some people make it seem he does).

Pikachu's harder to use because he doesn't have an Arsene to make kills as easy, but he has a far better OoS game, recovery, loops, arguably better projectile. The only reason he's not broken is because he can ocassionally have trouble killing.

Or.....Just stop trying to play competitively and play casually. If you really want to play competitively just accept that jank will happen, even at 0%. Roy CAN die at 0% because of his subpar recovery. Play a character you enjoy.
JOIN A CHARACTER DISCORD. People there are here to help you. Every pro was once an amateur.

If you don’t like anybody in the game, don’t play it at all. Pick up something like tennis or Go. These things are more productive and intuitive than Smash.

Well, duh, ESAM of course is going to spread misinformation about Kirby.
He knows literally nothing about him, likely google searched about his buffs for 5 minutes. He’s doing this clearly for video content. It’s clickbait.

Trying to be a competitive star is not for stressed lives. As you are a senior, focus on your personal life before Smash.

“Cheap” stuff will happen. Get used to it, it had happened millions of times at all levels of play. You will not get a perfect character in Smash. Nothing in this world is free.

    1. Messy competitive analysis. There's more characters, so there's bound to be content that's messed up. Bias clouds up judgement
    2. Content creation. A lot of newer players heading in will look at tier lists for success. The end result is gaining 0.1% of actual knowledge on characters from them.

I prefer the tier lists that aren't for competitive viability at all, but for various and sundry topics like character size, taunt quality, the ability to solve a Rubix cube, and how similar someone is to Marth.
smash twitter is so damn toxic on god
    Oz o:
    Oz o:
I deleted my Twitter ages ago. I don't follow Smash drama, so I never know what's up unless people tell me.
It's just trendy. Even the video uploading system sucks, and I don't know why people don't just use Youtube instead.
    GhostM
    GhostM
Twitter is pretty much the app for drama, so of course the toxicity levels are going to be high. I usually stumble across posts that instigate drama in the smash community, but I usually just avoid it. Sometimes curiosity gets the best of me and I end up regretting it later.

It’s not even Smash drama that Twitter is applied to, it’s with everyone including YouTubers and controversial figures. I tend to avoid many of these posts since sometimes people make assumptions off the bat.
I know results don’t mean everything, but I feel like people don’t put enough thought into the results characters achieve. There’s literally a debate on twitter about how Robins still bad despite Juul beating better players in THE best region in the world and getting top 24 at Shine. Surely that should say something about Robin, right?

Nope. She’s still bad because...she’s slow? I’m not about to claim she’s high tier or anything but cmon now. She’s not like bottom 5 like ESAM and others claim.

There’s also the Pikachu hysteria that’s
been going on since forever now. Everyone says he’s top 3 if not #1 in the game despite not even being in top 20 in Orion stats. You could argue it’s because he’s difficult to use, but Greninja and Snake have more results than him and are just as difficult, and their best players are worse than ESAM. Pikachu is definitely the most overrated character imo.

And then there’s Bowser jr, and honestly...I’m convinced that some people don’t even watch tournaments because people still put him in bottom tier like it’s month 1 lmao. Bowser jr got too 8 in Albion 4 with Young Eevey, the same player got top 32 in Glitch, Monty got top 32 in Big House, and he’s doing better in results than characters that many claim are mid tier. And people still put Ganon higher than him lol

Again, I’m not saying results are the end all be all of everything, but we need to take them into consideration more than I’ve actually seen people do lately.

    StoicPhantom
Once people establish a narrative, they refuse to let go of it, even if objective evidence shows otherwise. Merely mentioning Robin wasn't low tier in the Character Impressions thread got me dogpiled on. Then a few weeks later Juul got 17th at a super major and nothing was really said. This has been consistent with other things I've said in there and elsewhere and each time I've been dogpiled on and vindicated sometime later.

It's made me realize that there's little point in discussing character viability, because people refuse to be objective and let their egos get in the way. I haven't bothered setting foot in there since or really discussing tier lists and have just focused on the game. It's made (Smash) life much better.
