  • Think I'm finally ready to call myself a Palutena/Shulk main. Both Link and Ike will go back into my pocket.
The more I analyze her, the more apparent it becomes to me just how bad Palutena is lol.
Palutena's shield invincibility on her Dash Attack and Back Air are arguably the only things that keep her from being unplayable.
If I ran the balance patches for Palutena (kappa)

    • attacks deal 12.5% more damage
    • Jump Glide now normal Side Special
    • Lightweight now normal Down Special
At the end of the day, Shulk's frame data is WAY too slow to be ignored… His tech & potential almost don't matter with frame data like that.
Palutena has a very 1-dimensional neutral and a pretty lackluster punish game. You have to play off your opponent's mistakes with precision.
I just took the biggest L for "****posting" on Smash Amino lmao. Gotta lay low on that app for a while now. Hope I don't become a meme…
    Chike
    Chike
Maybe I'm exaggerating the situation, but still. In times like this, you just gotta fall back, take the head and wait until everybody forgets about it in the future.
I wouldn't mind people who play "lame" characters like Duck Hunt, Sonic or Toon Link if they didn't act like such scumbags lol.
As a Link player, I just have to accept the fact that if I ever let a Mario grab me that's a free 50% lol.
They really screwed Link in Smash 4 with all the sour spots on his attacks.
    Chike
    Chike
His dash attack is fine cause it's stronger on the tip and rewards him for using his range, but his DSmash is the worst. He gets a penalty (weaker hitbox) for using it at max range… That's completely unnecessary. It could've been much more reliable than it is now.
Link's DAir is really good at covering multiple ledge options, especially when you have a bomb or 2 lying near the edge.
    Chike
    Chike
It can cover regular ledge getup, ledge attack, ledge jump, hanging/staling, and dropoff double jump. It can sometimes cover roll if your opponent is big enough. You can also just drift offstage to avoid getting punished for its landing lag. If they chose roll, there's almost no chance they'll be able to punish you in time.
    Chike
    Chike
The only downsides are that you could possibly get 2-framed if you're offstage too long and you also give up stage control if it doesn't hit.
Tbh, I think it's pretty dumb how rage affects moves with "set knockback."
    Chike
    Chike
The move's knockback doesn't get increase with your opponent's percent but it will with your own? Who coded this…?
If I can't beat someone on auto-pilot, it legit takes me like 4-6 games to adapt… Wonder how I'd do in bracket lol.
Never neutral tech after being launched by Luigi's jab combo. Luigi players almost always dash in afterwards leading to the freest of grabs.
Shulk's BAir is such a weird move... It's very Roy-esque.
    Chike
    Chike
It's like, it has all this incredible horizontal reach but if you actually using it for spacing you get penalized cause of the sourspot.
    Chike
    Chike
I'm okay with Roy being like that cause he is supposed to juxtapose Marth, but Shulk…?
Link's pivot grab is amazing. It's active for 8 frames and covers many ledge/landing/teching options! Why haven't I been using this more?
    Chike
    Chike
Link has a slow approach game so when people get past my projectiles and I'm forced to deal with their pressure upclose, pivot grab is a great answer. It just has so much incontestable range. Also, if they notice I'm going for it too much then I can fake them out and go back to zoning with projectiles.
I wish Shulk had more control over when to shuffle through his Monado Arts (i.e. while shielding, crouching, teching, dodging, etc).
Bayonetta literally feels like a mini-boss character in Smash.
    Chike
    Chike
People say "just grab her," and I'm like "okay. But don't you think it's a little silly that I can use all of my attacks against other people, but for this one character I can't?"
The Samus FG Special: roll, roll, dsmash, shoot projectiles lol.
    Chike
    Chike
I feel bad for players who actually think this is the best strategy for playing Samus since it works online. Once they go against people who know how to crouch under missiles, perfect shield Charge Shots and punish rolls they just have no idea how to adapt.
I love playing as Shulk, but he has to win neutral way too many times to seal out a stock.
    Chike
    Chike
He doesn't have a good combo or juggle game and relies too much on stray hits to reel in damage. Jump makes you take more damage and Speed makes you deal less. Buster gives you an edge in damage, but then you don't possess the mobility Shulk needs to be threatening. Overall, he has more risks to him than rewards.
Sometimes, I feel like winning as Palutena is a taunt in and of itself... Especially the "too bad for you!" pose.
There's an interesting option select where if you input grab right before getting meteored on the ground, it will buffer an automatic tech.
    Chike
    Chike
If your opponent misses the meteor you get a free whiff punish grab. This of course won't work against electric meteors but it's still neat to note.
I love gimping people with Palutena's gimmicks!!
    Chike
    Chike
If someone Beefy Up-B's when you're both near the ledge, they're almost always going to try and go back to the ledge for safety. If you read this and shield the Up-B, you can get a Side-B gimp by using their backward momentum against them!! Sometimes a Forward/Down Smash might be needed to give an extra last second push.
If only Palutena's up air had a better autocancel window and less landing lag… She'd seriously benefit a lot if she could juggle people.
    Chike
    Chike
Her neutral air could also benefit from a bigger hitbox. And her Counter should have faster startup with more lenient FAF on whiff and on hit.
    Chike
    Chike
Ugh, I like this character but there are so many things Nintendo could've done to make her better. I hate how they made her so completely underwhelming without customs.
    Chike
    Chike
I actually played a Jigglypuff on FG earlier and she survived a quarter charged down Smash at 126%! (I had 76% rage). It's just such a frustrating love-hate relationship.
In regards to my last status, it seems that it's only 2 clanks allowed per hit of a specific move.
    Chike
    Chike
Just now, a Luigi player was able to cancel out all 3 bullets of the Autoreticle. That may be due to the fact that it's a multiple hitting move and there wasn't enough hitlag to make him freeze on just 1 specific frame of the move. So it seems that each additional, unique hit is allowed to "clank" with up to 2 bullets.
Interesting to note: air attacks seem to only be able to "clank" with other attacks or projectiles up to 2 times.
    Chike
    Chike
This is why, for example, if you use a sex kick to get through Bayo's Bullet Climax you'll only cancel a few bullets then you'll start getting hit by the rest, even though your hitbox is still active and you should technically be able to freeze in the air until she finishes shooting.
    Chike
    Chike
Just now, a Captain Falcon player used down air to cancel out the bullets of my Autoreticle when I was Palutena. His down air hit the first 2 bullets and he suffered from hitlag, but then he got hit by the third one even though his down air was still active and should've powered through it as well.
Palutena's extremely, for lack of a better word, honest. You'll almost never get a gimmicky or early KO with her, even with rage.
Is it just me or do get up attacks after being tripped have 0 frames of invincibility??
    YoshiGator
    YoshiGator
Well after tripping and in footstooled landing normal get up has no escape as well so probably.
Interesting to note: Palutena's dash attack sometimes cannot get hit by Down B Counters due to the invincibility. It goes right through her.
It's kind of ridiculous that Ryu has a frame 4 nair with only 6 frames of landing lag…
    Chike
    Chike
That's the lowest landing lag of any non L or Z cancelled aerial in all of Smash history. Not to mention he can act again only 7 frames after the hitbox goes away.
Donkey Kong can get a free 9-wind Giant Punch on Villagers who regrab the ledge without intangibility.
    Chike
    Chike
I just did it to someone on FG and I was pretty stoked about it lol. It was a very campy, plank-heavy Villager so I just went for it and it paid off big time. Hit him at 57% and he died at 86.
My next rant will be about Bayonetta.
    Chike
    Chike
    Her jab combo does 20%.
    Chike
    Chike
Most of her moves combo into each other fluidly. That's cool.
    Chike
    Chike
But I think I'll stop here lol. I've gotten a little carried away with salt as opposed to just analyzing her strengths. Don't take this all to heart.
Playing against a good Cloud is such an uphill battle.
    Chike
    Chike
You can't afford to make many of the mistakes that you could get away with against other characters. One whiff punished move and you're juggled for 40-60%.
    Chike
    Chike
You have to show his massive blade so much respect. And he doesn't just have the range. He also has the kill power and speed to utilize that range better than any other sword character. And don't even get me started on Limit…
    Chike
    Chike
He's known for being very accessible to newcomers, but seasoned Cloud vets are on a whole new level of frustrating to deal with.
I like to full hop with Palutena right before I do Autoreticle so all three bullets fire at a slightly different angle. Just in case lol.
