    Hey EL, I noticed you beat Seagull in bracket at KTAR XV. There's a serious lack of tournament replays of Ryu vs. Sonic especially with Ryu winning. You know if your set was recorded and uploaded anywhere? I haven't been able to find it myself. That's a mu I really need to study more.

    i dont second anyone. all ryu all the time. i dont think ryu can be successful unless his player goes all out with him. idk thats just my opinion

    Hey Emblem Ryu main here, wondering if you were up for some Ryu dittos and/or other matchups at some point.     perfect pivot is godlike. but its only really great for like half the cast. but i think it takes some characters to the next level. marth is only one of those

    Would it be possible to write a guide on how and why Marth has a good neutral game? As I mentioned in that Character Competitive Impressions thread, I keep seeing people feed into the idea that Marth is bad at neutral. If you have no time for that, no big deal, but I thought you'd probably be the right person to ask.

    Could you please tell me how Marth beats Ryu? I don't have Ryu and I've only faced him twice so learning everything about how to beat Ryu would be great. I won neither of these matches, if you're wondering. :(

    Sorry for the anti-climatic thing, one of our internet connections went spastic lol. Still, it was a lot of fun and I didn't know his Tatsumakisempuka didn't have a hitbox towards the end (I don't think it was like this in SF4, which I haven't played in like 3 years lol)

    Hmm well what are ways to punish Ryu's recovery, I had a lot of trouble trying to do that. I realized though that Marth can actually distance himself well against Ryu and utilize jab, u-tilt, DB, and u-smash, so is that why Marth beats Ryu?

    Also, I'm curious as to what you think of me as a player, btw. Any huge mistakes you saw me do that you want me to do? I think that I did pretty well, but I was mainly focusing on analyzing the best way to beat Ryu lol.

    Alright, I think you did a legitimately good job and you are clearly better than me. However, I feel like I was DEFINITELY off those games, and I feel like had I been nervous and had played at a not so late time for me, I would've done at least slightly better.

    I'm trying so hard not to sound like I'm johning, but could we by any chance go at it again sometime tomorrow? If not, anytime from 3-6 PM EST this week.

    rofl. dont be nervous. its all about the level ups and becoming stronger. play to become stronger not to win unless you are in tourney and even then personally even i dont go 100% in every match. mostly you just did alot of wierd unsafe stuff and got beat down for it thats all but i get home around 4pm tpday so im free anytime after that

    Yeah, I think just first match around I was tired and I was scared of your skill level and I wanted to win because for some reason I cared about how you would react. (I usually don't care about what people think about my skillz but if it's someone on the Marth boards I guess I have respect)

    I feel Marth has the capability of becoming top 15. Though I still feel restricted by (the 3-ds) the lack of knowledge I contain for all his movement options.

    Meanwhile, I feel a bit more familiar with Ganon.

    honestly Diddy has no match specific tols that give marth a hard time. I would not call that his hardest match. not by a long shot. Marth does fine vs diddy in neutral. diddy simply has greater reward, but if Marth baits him into hitting lots of buttons Marth can outfootsie him pretty consistently. His worst matches imo are Sheik, ZSS and Sonic. I think Sonic could be his worst.

    diddy DOES beat marth but its really only because of kill confirms and grab combos. easy damage confirms that marth does not have so he loses the battle of attrition.
    I feel ashamed to call myself a decent Marth while I can't perfect pivot out of dance trot, can you help me out on how to do it please? D: I didn't even know you could do it.

    New player here. How do I approach projectile heavy characters as Marth?

    Take it slow. Don't be impatient. Walk and shield alot. Then drop shield and continue your approach. If you Short hop then immediately air dodge you will land with normal landing recovery. Not the horrible air dodge recovery. Remember projectiles are annoying but most can't kill. The gameplan is designed to frustrate you and capitalize on mistakes. its more mental than anything else. always be calm and collected.

    Sheik beats Marth with defaults. prolly even with customs. vs duck hunt. waalk and block alot. Slash through gunmen. You can swat the can but not the clay pidgeon. just be patient. its like fei-long vs sagat. just work your way in

Do you have any advice on how to improve at the Neutral game/punishment? I feel it is very important in Smash 4, and I want to be a really talented player.     Shes beginner Marth. She will do better in 3DS version due to no cstick so its harder to space correctly with tippers. But Marth has a higher ceiling
    It's good to have you back, Marcel. It's nice having another person that understands theorycraft well back in the Marth boards again.
    Have you heard about the full hop dair yet though?

    It's definitely mu dependent, but it's fortunately pretty usable against all the top tiers (mk's dash/attack/grab and shuttle loop don't have immediate answers but if you whiff he nados). Like all things though, it's not something thats super spammable, and does require you getting hits off on shield/them.
    Okay, two major factors that come from not only full hopping but the fact that forward air is hitting in it's later frames from full hopping than short hopping (usually).

    1. Safety
    Used properly full hop retreating forward air is a lot safer on block. In terms of "distance" from your opponent after shield stun, there's a noticeable difference. This difference shows in that a lot of character's with powerful dash attacks will punish sh retreating fair on power shield very easily (Snake, Falco, Diddy, Zero Suit, etc etc) but have no/little out of shield options from the height Marth reaches. Otherwise, from a short hop, Marth is significantly more telegraphed in terms of where he will land, and also what he will do after landing. During a full hop ascension Marth reaches his maximum aerial mobility as well, giving him a stronger retreat. While Marth is floaty he's better than 2/3rds of the cast in terms of fast fall speed, and fast falling does have a slight impact on aerial mobility as well. The extra few frames gained from hitting someone on the later frames (like 7 instead of 4) has a slight impact in safety, also throws off people's power shielding timing. When fair's lag is over you're at around the apex of your jump at maximum aerial mobility and you can fast fall and be on the ground in not -that- much longer than if you did a rising sh fair into a ff, but you get a lot more "time" to space your landings with neutral air or fair. Characters like Olimar for example can power shield any aerial at sh range and usmash, dash attack or dash usmash, but he can not do the same from a full hop power shield. In general, Marth's best moves are aerials and one of the weaknesses abused over these years at many levels of play is ****ing him up for jumping.

    2. Follow up
    Full hop fair that hits someone chains into more forward airs at slightly higher percent, hence getting you more guaranteed/near guaranteed hits due to people tendency to DI upwards. Normally if we hit someone with a sh rising fair we would need to jump again for our next forward air to be horizontally aligned, an on hit full hop fair puts you at a much better height for a second fair, leaves you your second jump (for another follow up after the second hit).

    Try watching Mike against RichBrown or Olimar's in general. Full Hopping in that MU is pretty much key to not getting ****ed up the ***.
