Hey PPMD, so my friends have been playing smash for a few years and are about to start competing competitively. They've been getting in top spots in local tourney's, and I just started the game a month ago.

    Skedoom
I've known it for a while, but only started getting competitive a month ago, and now I am coming close to beat them. I still need to understand SHFFL, tech chasing, and chain grabbing. I'm trying to main a Falcon / Luigi. Any advice on how to practice?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
practice just the basics over and over. dont do mindless movement or actions. practice tech chasing or whatever in as many replicated situations as possible.
    Skedoom

    Ok thanks :)
Hey PP, this is something thats been bothering me for a while, but I thought you would be the best person to ask, because i need a non bias answer lol.

I study the game and practice a lot, yet this kid doesnt study or practice, or even watch tournament videos of his own to improve, and that bothers me. Is there a way to pull through this mindset of mine? And learn to beat him consistently, if hes the only player stopping me most of the time?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
effort wins out eventually. learn why he is successful acting the way he is and learn from it while also pushing yourself in your own ways of doing things.

Thanks a bunch! Also since you gave some books like the art of learning, ill return the favor. Serenity in Motion by Nancy O Hara is a 100 page book. Its amazing, and talks about finding inner peace within yourself at anytime. Whether waiting, sitting, standing, and im only 20 pages in and love it. I think you would too.Check it out!
Hey PP, what should be my thought process when trying to improve my combo game while practicing vs CPUs? Any threads you'd recommend that deal with improving punish game specifically? Marth player btw :)
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
practice with 20XX and use kadanos % guide!
Hey PPMD i doubt this is a problem for you but my hands tend to sweat when i play for too long and i was wondering if you knew any way to fix the issues it causes
    bloktorok
    bloktorok
I tried gloves but they impede my finger movements too much, if i had some that were super light that would be awesome but i cant find any like that

    Sorry to hear that.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
so i actually had this problem and "thought" the issue away by focusing hard on my hands when i played or was about to play. that might not work for you lol.

maybe you can get a sweat towel i see those more often lol
Hey PP, I'm a big fan of your falco and Marth. Keep up the good work! Although I do have a question for you. How do I develop a gameplan? I've been struggling with this for quite the while.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
a gameplan is based on fundamental understanding. divide the game into parts like neutral(and subdivisions), combo, tech chase, edgeguard, recovery, and so on. when you know how that works for you and your character and how to beat situations you can win

Thanks for your time PP! I appreciate your answer keep up the good stuff
Hey PPMD, I have two short questions. 1. What button do you use to jump, x or y (and do you ever switch it for techniques like waveshining)? 2. My hands tend to get cold all the time. I don't know what the issue is - I think poor circulation. Know anything that could benefit that? Anyways, much love from G'Joob <3

    Dr Peepee
i always use X. and exercise, calming stress in various ways, and handwarmers(the object) could be helpful things.
Hey Kevin! Are you coming to BEAST 6 in Sweden? :)

no sadly i dont think ill be in good shape body wise by then =(

Okay =( Wish you the best regarding everything you need to do to recover, so you can kick everyone's ass in 2016. We miss you!
Hey PP. What are some of your favorite readings/books on sports psychology/mental game/Inner Skills? It's a topic I've recently been really interested in.

I've read inner game of tennis, and I'm definitely going to read it twice, or thrice even.
I just want to say that to this day your falco movement is still by far the best in the world. Im not sure why others havent caught up in that area but I love your falco and GL in 2016.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
hey thanks a lot ill do my best with it!
How do you manage to shine cancel so quickly? (Like this here https://youtu.be/a3EvVrX7jls?t=38) When ever I SH out of shine, or waveshine, I still get the fully formed shine sprite to appear, where as, for you, it seems like only there are only some sparks when you shine. Any tips on how to get this down?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
maybe it was just a youtube thing lol, or maybe you just need to practice getting it faster. i suggest practice slightly faster timings and see if that helps!

    Rob0Cop
Thanks! I'll be sure to do that
Hey PPMD! I would like to say, awesome job at Genesis 3, getting 5th place! I noticed that your Marth seemed a bit off, and that you did not seem like you felt the greatest; furthermore, if this is true, I hope that you feel better soon!
Hey Ppmd there is a local at Carolina beach it's name is pier pressure and last time the pot was 300$ if you are interested you should come the date is January 30 b there or b square
I suffer from nerves while playing and perform inputs too quickly, something as easy as a wavedash suddenly becomes really difficult. Do have any tips to calm the nerves before a match? It seems to be my biggest issue. Thanks and good luck at G3 (sorry if this has been asked before)

meditation, reframing anxiety as excitement, exercise, and enjoying the challenge of a good opponent are things ive known to help
Do you practice your smash turns? By that I mean when you go from standing facing one direction, then turn and dash in the opposite direction without tilt turning at all. Is there a method to practice getting your smash turns down? I've been grinding them hard for a time now but I wanted to know how you do them.
    G
    GSGreg
As as example, in this video at 5:18 - 5:19 Mew2king falls down with a whiffed fair, and then dashes back immediately and returns to get the grab. He doesn't tilt turn at all. I think we've all seen m2k do a nair in place, then dash back and dash in again to get the grab about a kajillion times. Is he so consistent with it because he does it so often?
    G
    GSGreg
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
i dont practice it especially but i do practice dash backs like that out of actions sometimes. its just like practicing a series of actions as m2k did in your example that you would find useful in a match
I took a solid 5 minutes think about how to start off this question without wording it in a way that you don't get all the time, but considering how many questions you probably get I'm not sure if that is possible. Anyways, I was curious to know how you go about theory crafting and studying to improve? Is there a certain process you go about analyzing how others play and how to add it to your game?
I have a problem by overthinking games in each set. I have gameplans but I do not know how to approach actually thinking a match. What should I do during a match? Should i really be thiking? Or is their a way to approach such as just observing and reacting, because you know your options. Do I think about adapting? T
    onlyaaron17
    onlyaaron17
I noticed top players say they "dont like to think during a set" or "try not to think?" What exactly does that mean? I have a problem by overthinking games in each set. I have gameplans made for my main, and stuff like that, but I do not know how to
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
It's good to think during a set, but consciously that's mostly reserved for when you have time(hit someone far offstage, when you/opponent respawn). Otherwise you need to set up things to react to and know the answers that you can automatically go into in a match. In the beginning you probably will overthink some and that's okay, just remember this stuff and you can reduce it.
Could I have some tips for the marth vs jigglypuff matchup? Is the matchup in marths favor?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
i just talked about this in the main marth thread go check that out!
do you think pikachu is a bad matchup for marth ? Do you think falco or fox covers marths weaknesses better or do you think its about the same? I dont really enjoy the marth ditto and im thinking about maining marth. Ive played spacies for about a year. So I was toying with the idea of playing either falco or fox vs marth instead of the ditto and his 3-4 worst matchups but playing marth vs the rest of the cast.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
pikachu is not bad, axe is just WAYYYY better at it/knows it more than any other Marth. I think Fox easily covers Marth's weaknesses better but vs marth both spacies may be somewhat similar with fox being less affected by stages probably.
Hey PP, I have a question about something I saw you do in a match. https://youtu.be/IomXcdAAt7E?t=12m19s
What is that weird/ cool dashdance, did you make it up or is it a known tech? I've never see that before. Also, can only Marth do it? I want to learn it even if it's just for style Lol
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
LOL dang that was sick. The main thing is it's WD'ing one way then dashing the other way primarily which stalls your momentum in place. i think roy can do this to but that's it of the higher tier characters.
Hey PP, in 2011 you did falco matchup one liners that were really helpful. I was wondering if you could give an updated 2015 version of it. For reference it was the one that went
Fox- abuse landing lag. dont stop comboing unless you can throw/ smash him offstage
Ditto- keep your laser out or find a way to avoid their laser. then same as fox

then you did them for the other top characters as well
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
yeah thats true i want to do them again. ill do an updated one in a bit after ive given it some thought
    bolt.
    bolt.
    Oooo hype =D
    bolt.
    bolt.
    Any ideas yet?
I sort of love watching marths and foxes dash back grab to punish in neutral vs poor spacing. Is Falco's equivalent dash back bair ? Any other similar options ?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
move back laser, retreating dair, walk away utilt are some that ive seen used kind of similarly
I'm so glad someone like you actually uses smashboards, it is incredibly helpful, thank you.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
yeah of course i love discussion and talking to people =)
Hola PP, I'm curious on when someone is shielding when to Nair or Laser as Falco. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjP8wbNkv1g like at 0:21 you do a Laser there in front of Shroomed, was the Laser meant to cover the roll option/options to go to center stage OoS? If not why wouldn't a nair work besides the spacing of it?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
the laser worked in case he moved backward or shielded in place. it still worked well and maybe gave me more opportunity than a nair would have but it's hard to say.

Thanks PP, I was kinda curious why some Falco's including you do it.
PP! Hope you're doing well. I'm originally from Holly Springs, NC, right outside of Raleigh. I'm coming back home for awhile and was wondering if there were any specific places around that I could get into the scene there as well. I haven't been back since I started playing melee. Thanks much.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
just check the nc melee facebook group and you can get everything you need to know about whos around to play there!
How do you personally Dash Dance with Marth in the neutral? What are your goals, what are you looking for in your opponent, and when you see an opportunity, do you always go for it? Also, how far away do you dash dance from your opponent and do you always adjust when your opponent take space or do you try to keep your position? Sorry for all the questions. You are awesome PP!
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
threatening range= biggest move with fastest startup. dash sh nair with fox is an example. start there. from this position you see how they respond to individual actions and how much they respect options attached. good moves for marth to test with are dtilt and fair.
hey PP, depression isn't fun and I'm going on college break soon for 2 months. Is it wise to distract myself by practicing melee religiously (or whatever)? Have you ever tried drowning yourself with work?
    Choice Mheat
    Choice Mheat
ehh, that probably seems inappropriate to ask from a stranger. I'm hoping for you to kick ass and stay in good health!
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
its okay! melee can help distract you but won't solve the root issues. taking time to really think about what is bothering you and what you can do about it is very important. therapy/friends can often be really helpful here. exercise is generally useful for energy to get things done and mood too!
Hey PP, I just wanna say that I'm a huge fan and I main Marth as well. As a person struggling mentally, I really feel for you.

P.S. I love Kingdom Hearts too!
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
hey thats awesome to me! thanks so much =)
Yo PP, i'm a falco main and was wondering if you could tell me how i could improve my defensive game and my defensive options? Thanks!
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
learn to attack from platforms so people respect you staying up there. learn how to use utilt/bair to beat spacies/falcon options often and get your dash back lasers down for every matchup
Hey PP, What are your Falco training routines when you not with other people? I'm asking cause i'm new to smash and want to learn Falco.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
all the basics so WD SHFFL SHL edgedash etc and then i build on that. however thats where you need to start
Hey PP, loved seeing your face at Summit! As Falco, when you're near the edge of a platform/stage, why do you run off and then double jump into dair? Do you find it just easier and more consistent as opposed to running and jumping off the edge and doing a dair? Thanks!
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
i like to change when i dj because i can cover different options that way and they wont be able to react to which i cover
