  • I'm starting to think that three installments is/should be the maximum life of a video game series' formula. It doesn't matter if the installments are released annually or once-a-gen; once you go beyond three installments, sticking on a "sequel gimmick" isn't enough at that point and the devs really need to rethink the series.

Rather, the biggest problem is making everything in a manner that is milking the work as long as possible. Creators should have an understanding of the natural life of their work and when it is time to end things instead of milking it as long as possible. The current culture seems to be either not giving a **** and just retconning and making **** up as you go along or reviving or extending an already (spiritually) completed work past the point where it has been nicely wrapped up thematically. This is a consequence of making everything about profit.

S StoicPhantom : I'll say at least that video games are far more amenable to sequels than movies or tv shows. Refining and expanding on gameplay ideas is at least a more viable prospect than trying to continue a closed-off story.

But yes, even video game developers tend to try to milk an established gameplay formula past "the magic three" instead of heavily reimagining established elements in new contexts. Nintendo itself is one of the better publishers about averting this, and even they have trouble a lot of the time.
Am I alone in thinking that the movie theater is a trash entertainment medium?

Yeah, the screen is big and there's immersive audio, but you can't rewind if you didn't catch or understand something. Plus, you can't pause if you want to take a break/go to the toilet, so you either miss something if you go, or you intentionally forgo drinks and suffer through the movie with a dry throat.
I'm really worried that with this wave of layoffs in the AAA games sector, we're going to get a lot of anemic releases forced to be downsized due to these economic troubles. So pretty much like the current Mario spin-off wave, but likely with microtransactions.
I just had this thought that Pikachu and the Pokémon franchise as a whole at this current point is comparable in a way to Mickey Mouse and Friends c. 1950s-2010s in a way. They were largely declining in quality and relevance in proper media but still at the core of a massive merchandising machine. Will Pokémon ever get a director like Paul Rudish for Mickey that brings the former up with the times? Hopefully.
Now that I think about it, the SpaceWorld demo was one of the worst things to ever happen to Ganondorf. It just made edgy kids come out of the woodwork and want him to never fight without a sword, made the Zelda team think the same, and severely diminished well-deserved appreciation for his Smash portrayal.
People who complain about clones are children, but people who complain how the 64-Brawl characters are "outdated", "unfaithful", or "reference-light" are toddlers.
How would you feel about a proper ELO system for online? It’s very poor at the moment, as its still possible to get 4 player item matches when your using a competitive rule set. Maybe there could be a “casual” mode where ELO doesn’t affect it so you don’t have to worry about losing.
    Falcondorf players eat babies.

I'd love for us to coexist via a separate character or update with a sword mode for Ganondorf, but I don't think you're open even to that.

Well I was originally open to the idea but Falcondorf is just too fab and the haters...well, turned me off to it.

I mean, coming into the Dorf boards just to complain is a really silly thing to do. Lots of people think you're a joke, buddy.
Also, Falcondorf is LITERALL WORSE THAN HITLER. amirite?

And I totally agree with that. There's nothing wrong with that at all, but wavedashing really does have potential as being reworked into a basic command instead of leaving it the way as it is.

It's not the learning curve that's the problem; it's the disjoint in the learning curve.

Disjoint? I've never heard that one before. Excuse me for my ignorance, but what does that mean exactly?

Kinda hard to explain but it's a rather arbitrary barrier that causes a sudden leap in difficulty.

It's easily smoothed out by simplifying the input.
