  • Excuse me, but are you the same AmazingAmpharos who made the recent Ocarina of Time Randomizer? I realise this isn't really the place for it, but I was playing the randomizer and I think I found a flaw in the logic. My seed seems to be unbeatable because Zelda's lullaby is locked behind the forest medallion which is in the spirit temple. But I can't beat the spirit temple because it needs the hammer to open a door. But then the hammer is in Zora's fountain as an adult, which you need Zelda's lullaby to access. That plus the fact that Zelda's Lullaby is needed for soooo many things means I'm pretty much screwed, especially considering I need all the medallions to get into Ganon's castle.

Sorry to lay all this on you here, I don't even know if you're the one who made the randomizer. lol. But if you are, I wanna say I really love it and it's brought the magic back into one of my favourite games. So thank you.

I just wanted to bring this to your attention on the off-chance that it could be fixed. The "unbeatable" seed is 191661338. Thanks again!

The door the Hammer opens in the Spirit Temple has nothing important in it. It's a "shortcut" back to the main lobby except you have to push three silver blocks which is so slow that it only saves time if you would have to backtrack like 5 times making it perhaps the dumbest room in the game. More likely, your issue in Spirit Temple is from either missing the two invisible chests in the hallway leading to the Mirror Shield Iron Knuckle, being out of keys and needing a critical item from the Silver Gauntlet chest (you can Longshot from the Mirror Shield hand), not realizing what torches you can light with your current equipment as each age, not realizing just how much of child Spirit the adult can access (only two chests are child only), or something similar. Yes, I am the one who made the randomizer, incidentally.

...Yep, now I feel stupid. One of the invisible chests had a key. I completely forgot about them since I didn't have the compass. Oh well, I'm going to restart again anyway because I already looked at some of the spoiler log trying to find what I was missing.

On the bright side, I'l never forget those chests ever again. Thanks for your help!
Hey man, a few guys at my biweeklies are getting a little antsy. The rest of the country isn't really on board with the whole "customs" thing (we're the only ones, really), so they're worried that they're missing out on practice in 1111. Is this a legitimate concern? Should we be worried about this? How can I get them to cut this crap out? :/

Like, one person worried they wouldn't know how to fight default Rosalina, or that their Yoshi matchup experience would be tainted because the local yoshi uses a few customs. I think it's a load of hooey, but it's going to a vote and I dunno what to do.
Hey haha, I found a very old post from you on Gamefaqs or one of those forums. You were arguing about how bad Mother 1 was in comparison to the rest of the series. It was relevant because I was looking up why I couldn't use 2 of my healing spells and why I wasn't getting lifeup beta.

The game is quite difficult and very much a chore but I think I'm going to enjoy playing through and finally finishing it, because it'll give all the background to EB. :3

But yeah, it was quite funny finding the posts. I'm ready for Ana and Loid being effectively useless now! =P
    Amazing Ampharos
    Amazing Ampharos
Haha, I don't remember posting that in particular but it's certainly something I would say. I don't think Mother 1 is all that good, the game is a slog, and Ana and Loid are indeed really useless (if you grind like... 20 levels, Ana would be really good, but that's more trouble than she's worth).
    Luco
    Luco
Yeah, I did grind with Ana for ages and she's level 17 now which means she has a large damage output, but unfortunately she still kinda dies if anything so much as sneezes on her.

I'm hoping once I get to the final level I can grind for ages with Teddy or whoever it is that beats everything and level her up a little more.
Do you ever go to SLAST?

I've been a few times, but Wichita is pretty far away to go to play without customs. I probably won't be making it this month.

I've been trying to convince them to have a customs on side tourney, but no dice. Maybe you could make a post on their Facebook group? You'd have an easier time convincing them than me.
Hello, Ampharos. You've done an excellent job with customs so far, and I really appreciate what you're doing for the SSB4 meta as a whole.
However, do you perhaps have any clue when the project will finalize? If so, is there a thread for it?
    Any info would be appreciated.

Hey AA, I really want Megaman's 3322 loadout to be considered into his list, because nothing he currently resembles it. What can I do to make this possible? Thanks. :)

Hello Ampharos, I was wondering if you have any plans to make a 2nd wave of your Customs Project. I've seen at least one post where you mentioned certain characters need better layouts. The main one to me is Marth/Lucina and the lack of Horizontal Dolphin. If you have any plans to make a big update I would like to know, so that I may edit what is on my 3DS right away.
    Amazing Ampharos
    Amazing Ampharos
Yeah, but not instantly. I want to let some tournaments play out a bit first for optimum data for this.

Alright that's fair. I'll keep updating every time my local monthly event happens to do what I can.
Hey, this'll probably serve later down the line, but add me in on FB? We may be able to discuss things and come up with some ideas as far as customs go. My name is John Goldberg.
    Amazing Ampharos
    Amazing Ampharos
There appear to be over 20 John Goldbergs which makes tracking you down tough. I go by "Chris Ampharos" on Facebook which is likely unique so, if you send me a request, I'll accept.
What was your final 3DS stage list? Also have you settled on a good Wii U stage list? :3
Asking for informative purposes, also I'm a fan of your work ^^
Hey Ampharos, I need your help. 11 stages - what's the strike order?
    Amazing Ampharos
    Amazing Ampharos
1-2-2-2-2-1 would be what you'd have to do for 11 (or 1-2-2-2-1 for 9). 11 is somewhat sub-optimal since going first is a slight disadvantage, but at the scale of 11 it's not too bad as the difference is pretty small (9 is perfectly fair). I personally favor of 1-2-2-2-2-2-1 striking with 13 stages which is balance striking and feels "about right" for this game.
    Budget Player Cadet_
    Budget Player Cadet_
All right, I'll expand the list to 13. Here it is, FTR:
    - Kongo Jungle 64
    - Skyloft
    - Halberd
    - Lylat Cruise
    - Pokemon Stadium 2
    - Castle Siege
    - Wuhu Island
    - Mario Circuit (WiiU)
    - Yoshi's Island (Melee)
    - Norfair
    - Orbital Gate Assault

(Yes, I explicitly excluded the "standard" starter stages from the stagelist. Point of this online tournament: test new ****! :D)
    Amazing Ampharos
    Amazing Ampharos
That's pretty fun; Yoshi's Island (Melee) is the most shenanigans stage ever, and I hope people end up appreciating that.
Hey Ampharos, can you release an official HBC-compatible version of BBrawl? It's kinda annoying how I had to edit the gct just to get it to work.
Just posting it here in case you missed it in your project thread about customs:

Wide is probably not ideal for Swordfighter. It cuts into his already low mobility badly and we have also been able to confirm that the extra length on the sword in the graphics is not actually there- thinnest has the same range as widest, the hitbox just goes past the actual blade for thin, and stops before the blade ends for wide!

Go ahead and ask him. I'm pinning down the guest seats in the next two days. Send him to the facebook page. If he's interested he can make a post on the facebook invite page or you can.

    Thanks.

I'll watch the VOD, this is right up my alley. I work this day so can't see it live

Hey! Would like to know if there's any update to the KC (Shawnee) area smash-fest and locals? Or a FB page?

Yeah, we're hosting this Saturday actually at 3 as we have before (same place we indicated in that topic), and we'll be running smash wii u for the first time. I always post plans to the Kansas Stock Market FB group to try to keep what we're doing in the public eye.

Actually, a sudden family emergency came up for junglechief; we're canceling tomorrow but will be trying to reschedule to next week. Sorry.
I'd like to hear your opinion on custom moves, just in general. Any thoughts you have on them.
    Amazing Ampharos
    Amazing Ampharos
Um, the system is really good, one of the primary positives that makes smash 4 a great game? Custom moves do a lot more toward making bad characters good and bad match-ups more even than toward making good characters better or making lopsided match-ups evne more extreme, and the sheer gameplay diversity of so much moe stuff being possible is pretty great.
I don't think your ideas/efforts should be discarded. What about using something similar but only ranking the top 1/4 (13 or 15 characters for rounding?). Still give them a few categories to differentiate the top quarter (or just ask people to rate 1-15 proper, but I think I like categorising a bit more after reading through your plan).
    Shaya
    Shaya
With that top quarter in mind, I think a discussion paradigm of "how every character does against the perceived top quarter" can then be pursued and likely a lot of positive discussion built from it (I may even try to do that 'individual' character discussion/summarisation plan)
Hello. I'm working on a Smash project and I'm currently gathering feedback from various smashers. I come to you now because of a very positive recommendation. I'd love the chance to get your feedback about Smash and the Smash community. Can I send you some details about the project and a survey?

    Thanks.
Thank you for generally not being a douche. You post things with a certain amount of finesse and class, and I like that.
you are the balanced brawl designer? is it dead?
    Amazing Ampharos
    Amazing Ampharos
It pretty much is; development is finished on it. The game ended in a good place though so if you enjoy playing it, the final files should be good for just about whatever purposes you want.
You are the designer of Balanced Brawl?

Salutations. I really appreciate what you have done with that. It is my preferred Brawl mod and I use it all the time when I play. I haven't touched regular brawl in a long time because I prefer this balanced mod. Thank you for your work.
I'm pretty late to the party, but I just read your post about the Smash community and SSB4. We should chat sometime, I'd really like to hear your ideas on how to approach such a challenge.

Sorry I took so long to respond, but I've had a lot going on this week. If you have anything particular to ask, feel free to fire me a PM or something. If you mean catching me live, that's going to be hard for probably another week yet, but PM me something like AIM/MSN and I'll try to figure something out.

It's all good, sorry I was slow as well, thought I already replied... I was hoping to catch you live, but I'm not regularly on any chat client. Any chance we could set up a time? I check SWF frequently so you could just send me a PM with a few hours of notice and I should be able to make it, outside of my standard working hours (8-5 on weekdays, Pacific time).
I don't know if you guys are done editing Balanced Brawl, but I have a few things that I thought you guys should look into for the next patch.

One is Sing. Everyone knows it's almost the most useless move in the game, but I think that it would give Jigglypuff a little more depth if it had things like a bigger hitbox, being able to be cancelled, longer sleep time for the opponent (perhaps one frame for every percent of damage), ability to make opponents fall asleep in the air (for maybe half a frame for every percent of damage so that it doesn't become a broken spike).

Another thing that you might want to consider is making the one of the side taunts for the Pokemon Trainer's Pokemon to cause the Trainer to switch to the previously used Pokemon. Or maybe you could hack Samus' quick change taunt spam to do the same thing.
Hey, do you ever friendly locally? I'm interested in playing your g&w and maybe talking some research stuff
Can't we just clean out the off-topic messages and reopen the topic, and try to keep it on topic? IMO it's a pretty **** good topic, and I put a ****ton of work into it. There was actually some decent discussion, but then it got driven wildly off-topic and you locked it.
If any of those posts were mine, you'll be able to reply to them in Tactical in a few days when I post the counterpicking thread [which has been OK'd by an admin]
Ah awesome, thanks for that. And yeah, they're my main. Don't worry about Nana, I have just as much desire as you to get her stuff correct, I'm confident I'll do it properly. :)
Yo. Sorry about leaving this here, but my PM box is way over-full.

Anyway, I just wanted to clear up something to do with the frame data project. Specifically, how dead-set are you on doing ICs?

It's just that I thought I was doing them myself (and have said so in multiple posts), and I finally had a free day to do it, but apparently you were doing them instead now? I had no idea about that, so yeah, I'm just pretty confused about the whole situation and want some clarification.

Honestly, I really have no interest in doing other characters (my main purpose for being a researcher is to have a resource/platform for any ICs-related projects I do, tbh) -- maybe Marth or MK, but they seem to be taken too. I can understand if you still want to do ICs yourself, but I obviously would really like to do them instead.

But yeah, what do you think?
