****ing word limits. The new VM system is so butts.

so then it occurred to me that you would probably have a reasonable idea of things I would find cool or just plain good, and yet never knew about the thread since it's not in the public eye, and thus I'm neglecting an awesome potential source of recommendations. Anything hit you atm?

Gosh, that's tough because I really haven't consumed anything recently that I'm really enamored with. So nothing, like, new.

Weirdly enough, and I almost get the feeling like I've already recommended this to you, but what's jumping into my mind is Rango, that animated movie from a couple years ago in which Johnny Depp plays a lizard. Because for some reason, when I think of you and what you like, I guess I immediately jump to weird westerns parody/homage movies.

I don't know. I feel like you've probably already seen/read/whatever anything that I would think to try recommending to you. What kind of thing have you been in the mood for? It seems like you'd be hoping to stumble upon something specific.

Also, yeah, this post thing blows.

You did recommend Rango, and I watched it! And it owned and we talked about it a fair lil bit. Moods? Hm. I dunno, I feel like I'm in "a mood" but can't point to anything in particular. I watched a war drama/comedy earlier and I'm about to watch a comedy/drama/thriller about a british drug dealer. Not too many correlations there really.

oh boners, no UBB either??? ffff

Anyways my horizons are pretty broad when it comes to recommendations these days tho, I even watched an anime! And liked it! im also down for anything vaguely reminiscent of chris nolan, mysteries, action, whatever. love straight drama too.

Hm.

Well, I did watch the first season of Bates Motel, and can confirm that it is decent and has potential to become very good. It's kind of a psychological drama, but with a little bit of Twin Peaks weirdness for good measure.

It meanders a little, but the cast usually saves it. Just when you think it's starting to lose focus, Norman will mutter something his mother said earlier and it'll hit you "oh yeah, this kid's going to turn into the guy from Psycho, I gotta see this."

Also, Vera Farmiga is fantastic.

I was just about to point out how underrated Vera Farmiga is, both as a talented actress and a sexy lady, when i realized she probably plays Mother. ahahah

....I stand by my statement though. So does Bates Motel have a kind of unique tone, or whatever? I read some episode summaries recently when I was at my dad's place to watch a hockey game, and I was worried that the episodes sounded kind of typical or even soap operatic. What you're saying sounds like good news, I'm just curious what the tone of a given episode is like

It kind of depends. It oscillates between tense moments in which the main characters may or may not have their dirty laundry discovered by the local authorities, and just creepy unhealthy relationship stuff with Norma and Norman, with occasional teen angst stuff (there's too much of this, quite frankly).
