Personally, my preferred way to translate a character to Smash is to have their moveset be a mix of original moves and moves pulled from their source material, all to make that character feel faithful to the source material while helping them feel fresh in Smash.

Yeah, that's the way I see it too. I'm just saying Fox and Captain Falcon manage to be stellar movesets while barely pulling from their sources, so not having a comically large amount of them isn't a bad idea.

Move-wise, Ryu and Ken are fine, but I feel like their more explicit mechanics (1v1 autoturning, command inputs for certain moves, etc.) kinda go against the whole simplicity thing Smash is trying to go for.

It's definitely a character-by-character basis, that's for sure.
