I wouldn't say "objectively." I feel like plenty of games are actually improved by smaller rosters.

Smaller roster means more time polishing those that are there. Many smash characters have overlapping move sets to a ridiculous degree, even if they are not related in the slightest (by series)
Like,do we really needs bajillion plumbers? Doc has no real reason to exist. Do we need 3 links? Maybe 2, but... 3!?
